it is partially about the story of King David and when he fell in love with Bathsheba, which caused him to fall out of grace with God. Then Cohen intermingles a part of his own broken relationship in with it. in my opinion Cohen was meant to write it and Jeff was meant to sing it.

It’s also describe Samson who’s folly was women, and when he told her the secret to his strength she cut his hair in his sleep, and the Philistine men came in and captured him. His eyes were the gouged out and he was chained between two pillars to be mocked. I’m his final moments he asked God to renew his strength one last time, and he pulled the two pillars down causing the building to collapse, killing himself as well as his enemies. The kitchen chair line is in reference to the initial lie he told the woman he was with. He told her his weakness was brand new ropes, and she tied him to a kitchen chair in his sleep only for him to break out. Then after several go arounds he revealed to her his hair was the source of his strength and once she knew the truth she betrayed him.

Jeff was one of a kind. His music feels like it has a lot of melancholy and pathos but he clearly understood that some music is a way of allowing the listener a glimpse of the transcendent, so you come away from listening to his music somehow feeling melancholic, reflective and joyous. Check out his version of Corpus Christi Carol which is a piece written over 500 years ago and is always overlooked and is another interpretive tour de force.

Was written from the perspective of someone who had lived a lot of life. He knew the pains that can break us and when we still survive, that is the thing that pulls the "hallelujah" from us. It isn't the victory, it is the survival. Most people find out about it through the trials of life.

Leonard Cohen took over ten years to perfect this song; at one point having 50 stanzas. He used a lot of images from his Jewish faith (King Davidś fall) and struggled with depression. Those who covered the song took what worked for them. Elvis Costello did a cover, you can year it w piano by a ... Mr Cale then Jeff picked it up and make it a hit...it became more popular after he died. A tear-jerker and makes your heart ache. God draws straight with many crooked and imperfect lines.

It’s a good cover of a Leonard Cohen song. I think you should listen to Cohen’s Live in London version. It is sublime.

The talent combined with the real emotion, originality and pain we had in the 90s will never again be seen. It's absolutely absurd when you start going down the line. And sad as we lost them all. Jeff Buckely was part of that.
    Last great generation of music.

I once got to share a sliver of my life with a soul mate. It was more intense than everything I felt in my life before or since. Combined. When we parted, this song and James Blunt's 'Goodbye My Lover' were the songs we left each other with. This song still wrecks me.
If Leonard Cohen's writing reaches you that much, might I suggest Famous Blue Raincoat? There's an awesome cover by Jennifer Warnes I really love. Also...
    - Everybody Knows
    - First Wee Take Manhattan
    - A Singer Must Die
    - Joan of Arc
    - Came So Far for Beauty

Jayy, I think you would love "Retrograde" or "Wilhelm's Scream" by James Blake and also think that you would be moved by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds "Oh, Children". I love your heart and spirit. Also, if you have the time, the original of this song was done by the great Leonard Cohen, so you might want to check out his version. Leonard Cohen is a legend, RIP, but my favorite of his is "Dance me to the end of love". Much love, Jayy.

Gone too soon. Probably the most talented singer of the 90’s and that’s saying a lot. I named my daughter after his album. Grace is a timeless masterpiece.
