The Jeff Buckley version is the only version in my opinion. Cohen wrote it but Buckley made it beautiful. Everyone who sings it after pales in comparison.
it is partially about the story of King David and when he fell in love with Bathsheba, which caused him to fall out of grace with God. Then Cohen intermingles a part of his own broken relationship in with it. in my opinion Cohen was meant to write it and Jeff was meant to sing it.
It’s also describe Samson who’s folly was women, and when he told her the secret to his strength she cut his hair in his sleep, and the Philistine men came in and captured him. His eyes were the gouged out and he was chained between two pillars to be mocked. I’m his final moments he asked God to renew his strength one last time, and he pulled the two pillars down causing the building to collapse, killing himself as well as his enemies. The kitchen chair line is in reference to the initial lie he told the woman he was with. He told her his weakness was brand new ropes, and she tied him to a kitchen chair in his sleep only for him to break out. Then after several go arounds he revealed to her his hair was the source of his strength and once she knew the truth she betrayed him.
Leonard Cohen originally wrote & recorded hallelujah, you're right it was in Shrek performed by Rufus Wainwright & it was in TV series Scrubs performed by John Cale. Hands down Jeff's version is the best his voice is so hauntingly beautiful. rest in peace Jeff Buckley ♥️

I know Leonard Cohen wrote all these genius verses and the song has been covered beautifully by many singers. Imo, though, nothing tops this version. Jeff's guitar nuance beats anything, and he sings like it's his one and only chance at this song. Thanks for reacting.
It just feels so intimate and personal, all of that pain. It’s just him, that Fender Stratocaster, and a distortion pedal. I don’t think there’s even really any mixing or any kind of editing, it’s just him.

Was written from the perspective of someone who had lived a lot of life. He knew the pains that can break us and when we still survive, that is the thing that pulls the "hallelujah" from us. It isn't the victory, it is the survival. Most people find out about it through the trials of life.
Leonard Cohen took over ten years to perfect this song; at one point having 50 stanzas. He used a lot of images from his Jewish faith (King Davidś fall) and struggled with depression. Those who covered the song took what worked for them. Elvis Costello did a cover, you can year it w piano by a ... Mr Cale then Jeff picked it up and make it a hit...it became more popular after he died. A tear-jerker and makes your heart ache. God draws straight with many crooked and imperfect lines.
@@Geoglyph89 no. Those are all man made to help us try to study and understand something. Sound and music are as old as the cosmos and is the only thing that can create from nothing.

The first verse and the “your faith was strong but you needed proof / you saw her bathing on the roof / her beauty in the moonlight overthrew ya” lines are references to David and Bathsheba. The words, “…and she cut your hair” are a reference to Samson and Delilah.

I think one of the most powerful Leonard Cohen songs is "Dress Rehearsal Rag" from Songs of Love and Hate. I remember he had a lot of trouble playing it live because it overwhelmed him with emotion.
I wish he'd sung the last verse, which Cohen always sings. It's a statement that despite everything his faith remains. The last lines are: "And even though it all went wrong./I'll stand before the Lord of song/with nothing on my tongue but hallelujah." It's a truly beautiful sentiment.
