Thanks so much for this. I still remember my first experience with meeting a red breasted nut hatch. It was walking head first down a tree trunk! One of my favorite birds ever since.
Always a treat to see your latest video. Your long-term relationships with the birds in your woods let us see them and their interesting lives in such amazing detail! Thank you for highlighting these delightful little birds, and especially lovely Lentil!❤
These little guys are so brave. I was filling the bird bath and a nuthatch got a peanut from the bird finder not more than a yard from me. He even talked to me! I guess he was just saying hello.
I love these smart and beautiful birds! It was only when covid kept me and my husband home that I started feeding wild birds and really got to watch nuthatches (and lot of other birds) on a regular basis. Then I found your channel and fell even more in love with them. Thank you so much for your videos! I love learning and your own obvious love for these little birds is so infectious. :)
Oh my gosh, that is so wonderful about the pandemic bringing out your love for the birds. I'm glad that you found my channel, too, and that you enjoy it. Love this🥰
@@LesleytheBirdNerd Well, I did like birds as a regular thing before the pandemic but in 2000 my husband and I bought a little parrot... and we both fell totally in love with him and, by extension, all birds. Sadly, he only lived 7 years but wow, he taught us so much and we loved him so, so hard... Now I feel that love expanding to fit all birds. And you have helped me so much to do a better job with the wild ones!
We always have nuthatches in our bush and I love to hear them and watch them scampering around the trees. For the first time this spring, I saw a male giving a female a food offering. They were really chattering to each other. So sweet. Hopefully they found a dead tree to nest in.
I have a couple of Eurasian nuthatches at my feeder, and me and my partner lovingly refer to them with pet names as "the bandits" or "look, the pointy one came for a snack". They are so brave and inquisitive and one of them impatiently landed on and pecked on a ball of... (Lard? Tallow? I don't know what they are called in English, lol) in my hand while I tried to fit it in the feeder. An absolute joy to just sit and watch them go about their business, and especially at this busy time for them.
Aww that is wonderful about them being daily visitors. I would love to see White-breasted nuthatches, and I would love to do a video on them. They are beautiful
@@LesleytheBirdNerd based on this video they have a lot of similar habits! once they found the feeder we have they have become really confident. I live in a suburban area in California and didn't even see them around before, but they climb around the cage on the tube feeder we have and chase everyone else off when they want some time to themselves haha I am completely enamored by the one male who comes around often who I started calling Jeremy
oh this is such a treat!! love seeing how nimble they are when they move and all of the little noises they constantly make, really just a delightful lil creachur
Wow, wow, wow. Tonight's video 5/21/23, is exquisite among your many, many soul-stirring videos. You actually recorded an incredible moment of them relocating the hidden food, oh my gosh! And the uncaching of the mate's just cached nut was fun to see! I will often call out yank yank yank to let them know I'm thinking of them, hear them, and have unsalted peanut halves or even pecans or walnuts or almonds (all unsalted). I love these little guys with all my heart. When you brought up the footage of Pinto and i heard the strains of that song you used to play in many older (and gorgeous and excellent) videos, i about cried. That music in your videos used to be my happy place. Watching and listening has brought me such peace and joy and appreciation over the years. I remember Maggie, and Hatch. And Kiwi with Lentil. And Dart, Patch, Buster, altho more vaguely them. I never comment, Lesley, but you and how you do, with your beloved birds, astound me and I quietly thank you each time you allow us into that beautiful world too. 🎼🐦
I have white breasted nuthatches in my yard. I adore them. Thank you! Edit: the up and down trunk walking is what caught my attention first. Thought it was the coolest thing to watch.
I love nuthatches. We mostly have White-breasted Nuthatches here, but I've seen Red-breasted as well. I didn't know they could catch nuts on the fly! These birds are SO COOL. Thanks for the video! :)
I thought I knew a little bit about RBNH's. I was right, I knew little. FANTASTIC video! I did not realize they were such talented little creatures. They are thoroughly enjoyable to watch at the feeder. . Pretty clever setting the camera at the bottom of the tree and watching the nuthatches coming down. Thank you, Lesley for sharing the video. Loved it!

I've learned so much from you. Thank you so much for posting all your videos. These nuthatches are fascinating. I love that they surround their nest hole to keep our predators. Their ability to run up and down trees. Great footwork! ❤
I enjoyed to have visits of the white and the red-breasted nuthatches at my feeder at the same time this last winter. Now spring has sprung, and late this year, I wont see them or hear them until the piles of snow return.
Clever little birds! That's amazing about the use of sap resin as well as concealing their food caches. Nice some can catch those snacks mid-air. It's always a treat for me to see the Red-breast Nuthatches as they're not common in my regular birding areas. Excellent video and thanks for sharing!
Aren't they though?! Red-breasted nuthatches do some of the clever things for sure and they are just so awesome. Thanks for the nice comment, hope you have a wonderful night 🐦🙂

I just love nuthatches, have both red and white breasted, they are so adorable with cutest noises. Also friendly and will eat from my hand. I have Aframe house and they walk every which way up and down roof, so funny to watch no other bird can do it.

I have them here in central New Hampshire, and back when I still had a feeder on a tree branch I'd get raided by chipmunks regularly. One day a chippie was headed back along the branch with a full load, the only escape route without a 6 foot jump to the ground, and he was confronted by a nuthatch who, for whatever reason, decided to do a "You Shall Not Pass" routine complete with the wings spread and the little swaying dance. The chipmunk stopped, looked confused for a moment, glanced down and decided "nah", looked back at the nuthatch and remembered that this is just a little bird after all, and barreled through. The nuthatch, of course, deftly flew up out of the way, but I'm quite sure the chipmunk received a good peck in the head as he passed by. And me without a camera running. So it goes.
I live in Northern California in the Sierra Nevada mountains, I didn’t even know these birds existed until I started putting feeders in my backyard last year. They definitely stand out from the crowd because of their adorable honking and the fact they are fearless! They fly right up to me when I’m refilling the feeders. I’d love to get them to eat out of my hand. They nest in the redwoods and pine trees behind my house. I love watching them flying back and forth, nonstop, all day. They’ll pick up a tiny morsel and fly back to the nest only bringing one seed at a time, it’s rather funny. I also love the constant tin horn honking sounds they make, there’s no mistaking them for any other bird! Thanks for all the great videos, I always learn something new from them. 😊💜🪶🦅💙🦉

What a wonderful video! Not only are the red-breasted nuthatches very pretty and vocal, but they have some amazing adaptations and abilities! Thank you for these beautiful clips and the fascinating information, Lesley. There are white-breasted nuthatches where I live. I’m still mourning what I think was one of them that a hawk got, in my Japanese garden about ten days ago. Apparently the hawk ate it on the spot, because there were bones and feathers - took me a while to identify it. I buried it under a flagstone. I bury all my babies unless all that I find are feathers. It’s nesting season here, and I’m kind of distraught that a mate and babies might be left behind.
I am so sorry, they are so easy to love and it breaks our heart. It is nice that you buried the little one's remains. I hope that no babies were left behind, it's possible that they may not have been.
Very interesting about the pine sap they use, the tree you showed with the "bubbles" is a balsam tree, you can tell the difference between the balsam and spruce by the needles, the balsam tree will have just two rows, or flat needles, on opposing sides of a branch while the spruce will have needles all the way around the branch. Ive been fortunate to have gotten fairly close to nuthatches while out bowhunting, they arent overly friendly like a chickadee can be but they also arent flighty, they seem to tolerate us humans pretty well. Great vid Lesley and congrats on being over 200K subscribers!
Thank you for pointing that out to me. I do not know my trees at all and I really don't like that since I'm out there so much. I do plan on taking the time to getting more familiar with the trees and stuff. It's a must hahah. That is true about the nuthatch they will watch people and come around a little but certainly not like chickadees. Thank you, it's amazing that I'm here at 200k :)
These are my favorite birds! In winter I have a pair that comes down and makes their home in a pine tree in a neighbors yard. They come to my feeder daily until they head back north.
Here in northern Ohio we have the white-breasted nuthatch. They look like little penguins bobbing up and down on the tree trunks. One often comes to my feeder, and I have seen him do the raised wing tactic to scare off competing chickadees and tufted titmouse. Sometimes he will even turn it into a brief "dance", where he sways back and forth with the wings outstretched. But it only works about 50% of the time, as the chickadees themselves are quite bold!
I noticed the Nuthatches really like to peck on the metal hangers on my porch. They particularly like a decorative metal pot holder with a handle. Not sure why they're doing it but they seem to enjoy it.
I haven't seen the red-breasted here in southwest Virginia but we do have the white-breasted and I've made friends with one. I love the little nuthatch birds, they are so fearless and they can walk everywhere even hanging upside down like a bat. The cutest thing is when they hang upside down and then do their spread out wings and swaying to scare off other birds from the feeder. To me at least the friendliest birds I've come in contact with are a little white-breasted nuthatch and then I've got hummingbirds to the point they will land on my forearm while I hang their nectar feeder after refilling it. I need to get a good camera to get all these little bird friends on film.
Thank u so very much! I’m not sure if u are reading the responses any longer as I remember u said you needed to stop your RUclips channel. I was sad as I had just started to watch it. Anyway I adore Nuthatches. As a child I spent a lot of time on my grandparents property in SW New Hampshire way out in the woods. I grew to love their sweet vocalizations and their adorable movements. As I got older I would go alone as my family passed away and they would keep me company and from being afraid in the woods alone. My sister sadly sold our property breaking my heart but I’ll never forget my sweet Nuthatch friends. Take care Lesley. You are an amazing photographer.
You're welcome, glad you enjoyed it. I don't respond as often as I used to but I do try to when time allows :) After months of taking time off I've decided to come back to RUclips but not full time like before. There are several videos dear to me that I want to finish. One of them is pretty much done and will be up soon! By the way, sorry to hear of the property being sold. I agree that nuthatches are such sweet birds, I love them too. Take care
We have a sawmill and firewood business and this morning my husband and son were in the woods and there was a crow up in the tree and he was barking like a beagle dog which are used for rabbit hunting here in Newfoundland and Labrador where i live. So obviously he has been watching what the dogs do to get a rabbit going and he was doing the same thing and looking down to see if he got either rabbit moving! My husband and son were flabbergasted that the crow was intelligent enough to mimic a hunting dog. I wish I could have seen it as I love those birds.
Your videos are the absolute best...I'm not able to see birds... #1 where I live now, the house is situated where I can't just sit and watch...#2. I'm not able to walk, around very well...soooo your videos are just the best...I've been watching you for a few years now...also wanted to say hello😊♥️

Take care
LoL! Using Lesley as seed storage! 🐦
Nuthaches are some of my favorite birds. Theyre so cute and gregarious, and as your video points out, quite interesting!
Your channel is the best thing to see in the morning 🌄🌞 😍
My mother in law used to call them "upside down birds".
Imagine how terrifying those talons would be if they were the size of an eagle!
I detect a Newfoundland accent. Thank you for everything that you do.
Your videos are the absolute best...I'm not able to see birds...
#1 where I live now, the house is situated where I can't just sit and watch...#2. I'm not able to walk, around very well...soooo your videos are just the best...I've been watching you for a few years now...also wanted to say hello😊♥️
😂 how cute these little ones are!!!
My brother is well versed in knowing the birds around him, me...not so much. Love watching your videos, seems the birds love you as much as you them.
I love your amazing content. Please do the mockingbird, one of the most fascinating birds I've ever encountered.
Thanks so much. A Mockingbird video would be wonderful to do, hopefully some day :)
