  • Speaker(s): Professor Lord Giddens
    Chair: Professor Judy Wajcman
Recorded on 19 February 2013 in Sheikh Zayed Theatre, New Academic Building.
The risks we face, and the opportunities we have, in the 21st century are in many respects quite different from those experienced in earlier periods of history. How should we analyse and respond to such a world? What is a rational balance of optimism and pessimism? How can we plan for a future that seems to elude our grasp and in some ways is imponderable?
Anthony Giddens is former Director of the LSE and a member of the House of Lords.

It’s interesting that he said that “maybe someone will invent a clever way to remove carbon from the atmosphere, but they haven’t yet” (Paraphrase of course). But we already know what takes carbon out of the atmosphere! Plants! I assert that the best plant for the human race to do this is Hemp. Instead of cutting down trees and producing toxic carbon emitting concrete we instead convert to using Hemp to build all our housing, the majority of our fuels, much of our medicine, most of our clothes, etc… All at a carbon NEGATIVE level. BOOM! Taking carbon out of the atmosphere and saving the human race. Your welcome. LOL!

That is, instead of "inventing" a machine to do it.

I wish more academics would admit what O levels they got. Giddens has O level maths.
