‘Serious failings’ contributed to baby death in Bronzefield prison - inquest

  • A coroner has ruled that multiple systemic failings led to the tragic death of a newborn baby at HMP Bronzefield in Surrey - Europe's largest women's prison.
    Rianna Cleary, who was eighteen at the time, called for medical attention at least twice whilst in labour with her daughter, but was ignored.
    Coroner Richard Travers concluded that Aisha Cleary 'arrived into the world in the most harrowing of circumstances'. And there are calls for an end to pregnant women being sent to prison.

In fact, some of the other visitors stated that they would quite like to have had one of the prison rooms when they were a young person.
      I was very conscious that Sodexo were looking to make a good impression, but I felt that they were lacking in some respects. I felt that there were too many young and inexperienced staff.

I advised him to gather all the girls together who told me about hearing the baby alive and find out the truth of what happened. This went nowhere which I found suspicious. It was obvious to the girls in prison that the baby was indeed alive and later was found dead. MOJ has no teeth over this prison as it is run by a French outsourced company.

    Absolutely amazing responses here from the comments as always and not once do the majority say the mother is to blame.
    She is entirely to blame for the situation she finds herself in and as a result that her baby finds itself n. I'm getting sick to death of all you goodie goodies blaming everyone but the person responsible for the situation.
    The minute you give someone leniency for crimes they will abuse it. Rather than say "they should have deferred her sentence till after birth", instead you should be saying "why get pregnant and commit crimes that could land you in jail", because 100% you will be the same people who will then say you can't lock up a woman cos she has to look after the child.
    2 options were available here;
    1. She has the pregnancy aborted.
    2. She carries to term and then social services steps in and takes the baby away.
    I would say option 1 is the better option, cos then the state doesn't have to pay to look after yet another persons child who cannot look after themselves, let alone another human.
    Bottom-line here is this;
    1. Don't break the law, Don't go to Jail.
    2. When In Jail and you are Pregnant take extra care of yourself.
    3. If you cannot handle or manage being pregnant, then don't be.
    Anyone going to prison who is pregnant isn't in anyway fit to be a parent or have a child.
    So lets stop the blame of the prison, and start blaming those responsible.. IE: The Mother.

    Sodexo is a French catering/ management company, who run this Prison for profit. I strongly feel, we the voters, have a duty of care, towards people we place in prisons. Styal Ladies Prison, which is run by the Ministry of Justice, for non profit, have a medical wing, together with a strong proven duty of care policy, for all inmates.
    I used my vote, in previous elections, to allow profit, over care, which is mirrored in our NHS care system, I feel, I cannot allow another new live to end so tragically, and I will personally vote for a party who cares, for human compassion, and not for profits.

I did not call an ambulance when i went in to labour and everyone is in pain when giving birth, so i have to be honest, i was the same age, no phone and gave birth without help, the mum was s3nt to prison to ensure no more harm was done to the baby, though it is very das that a human has died as prison have inmates try so much to get out of thier cells just for attention, i can see why officers dont pay much attention , when so many other inmates fake it to get out.
