Unrolling your bales will improve your soils by distributing the nutrients of the remaining bales and by distribution of urine and manure over a larger area. In addition, the hooving action will help stimulate seeding of the seed in the bales as well as existing seed from your own pasture. The biggest plus is allowing all animals to eat without bully pressure.

Good comment Roger. Makes so much more sense to distribute the hay rolls, less bullying, so the weaker ones get a chance.

I have a small herd (only seven) but the two youngst (and smallest) are chased away, especially the bull is a bully (pun intended). I tried making two different places, but the bull and Hyena (the leader) runs back and forth untill they dominate both. I will try rolling it out, so everyone can eat as much as they want. Thanks. Just starting out so a lot to learn.

Your explanation as to why you would want to spread it out or keep it one spot. You mention the bison pecking order nearly every video I’ve seen (new to the channel). So it makes total sense to spread it out and make it more accessible to lower ranked bison too. Thank you, your videos are both interesting and informative

She studied how they move and think and designed equipment to make it easier on cattle when working/moving them. You may have seen it, if not I highly recommend the film and some of her RUclips content if you have cattle and want to keep the stress down when you have to work them.

The enclosed cab skid steers are nice from a dust standpoint. As a very tall person, I find getting through the door to be tough.. Further, the ones that I have rented have had wimpy AC systems. When it is 90 degrees plus, they are hot. They are probably great for the midwest and northeast and I'm sure that the heater works great. In the southwest, the AC is just not strong enough to make them worth the cost. I'll take open air and dust over "cooking" in a hot, barely conditioned, compartment, any day. CAT, JD, and the other skid steer manufacturers, need to triple the air flow and cooling power and have at least 6 vents in the cab if they want to sell one of these to me.

@@jessicaoppegard6578 I don’t think so. The bison ate a toxic plant. I’m wondering if it was from a toxic algae bloom in one of the ponds. She did like to play in the water. And there have been numerous reports of healthy dogs dying quickly after playing or swimming in water that was previously okay to swim in, but developed a blue green algae bloom, called Cyanobacteria. It develops during warmer weather. And It isn’t always easy to see, either. But it can literally kill a healthy dog within minutes. Scary stuff.

We thought about raising some at one point. But we were told they have to be kept behind very strong fence. Not just hog wire and maybe not cattle panels..( it was about 20 years ago and we are too old and arthritic to deal with those big ol guys now.) Which I didnt understand as they had some behind regular yard fencing at a park I used to go to. With no guards or security. Ok now I see your strong fence. We were able to buy meat from a doctor who raised them and had a meat market. Then he quit and we can't find buffalo anywhere that a person could afford to purchase. Tried some from Walmart once. I bought up several ,I was so thrilled !! It was spoiled.

Another benefit of rolling the hay out is it's replenishing the ground with its nutrients. The Stoney Ridge Farmer (Josh) is a regenerative farmer with brand new land and he does roll the hay for his cows but its to also repair the bare spots of land in the process. The videos are very informative going from weeds to grass using only natural means....no sprays to kill things off. Only fertilizer used is from the cows. They are a beautiful herd of Angus cows, a bull, and a donkey he moves from pasture to pasture allowing each pasture to regenerate. Hope you can watch him.

Better to spread it out, good for the land and for the Bison.

You need a ATV seed spreader to spread the wildlife blend. It holds a whole bag. We use it on our food plots.

Walker fam spreads it so all cattle can eat it at the same time.

I had chili last week, of course I had to use ground turkey. Maybe after the midterm I can step up my game to ground Bison.....lol
Can't wait for the fall roundup in couple weeks....exciting to watch. Never know what may happen.

Question: Do you ever drag some kind of bar or whatever, over empty pastures to break down the poop patties and help fertilize the soil? Love your channel.

THOR the god of thunder is starting to be a big boy, I must of missed an episode somewhere as I didn't see why elsa was replaced. That cheekie devil Hoss makes me laugh, give him an inch and he will take a mile 😅. Great video Dusty, can't wait to see you guys working the Bison and hoping Big Joe will be a good boy xx

Dusty when we were feeding round bales to the cattle pens (100 - 200 per pen) we would put them at the top of the hill and let gravity roll them out for us. In smaller pens (20-50) head if needed away from the main place where the hay was kept we would put one bale in the back of a truck (tailgate down) and back up with a little bit of speed (around 6 mph) and then slam on the breaks and the bale would roll right out the back of the truck bed. Just might be easier for you to roll the bale out (start on the edge of the hill by the auto water in that pasture) easier, should not have to set the bale on the ground to remove the wrap either, just keep it a few inches above the ground surface.

experience says it is almost impossible to open a skid steer door with a bale on.
