i would say dreamland is actually the album where they took the least risks. definitely listen to how to be a human being, it's such a unique album and one of my favorites ever. zaba is good and interesting too, just a handful of the songs are too slow for me to get into.
also, i will say that glass animals is not a band i personally listen to for the lyrics. its much more the sound and the vibe, and the way the lyrics sound rather than what the lyrics actually mean, but thats just me
I think pools is genuinely one of the most beautiful songs i've ever heard and I'm not really into bedroom pop. Quite a few gems on those first two albums imo.

I recently just got into them because of the heat waves craze and was curious to see what else they got. I also really enjoyed Dreamland because it's very catchy but the previous records HTBAHB and Zaba are honestly one of the best things I've ever heard
@@Kauft_man_auf That's the only problem i have with brad, he just doesn't give some things a chance and goes into them already hating it. Also, if you listen to an album while you have a bad mood, then it's very likely you're gonna have a bad time with it.
For the record, Domestic Bliss is based on Dave's childhood memories of seeing his friend's mom in an abusive relationship and not really understanding the situation, thinking he can solve it just by begging her to leave. I agree that it's still uncomfortable to listen to but I can see where they were coming from with the lyrics
Zaba (their debut) is honestly one of my favourite albums ever - love the tropical soundscape that project evokes. Super clean production and very vibey.
Glass Animals were my favourite band at some point but i was pretty dissapointed with dreamland. Zaba is still one of my favourite albums though, its such a unique and interesting psychedelic children-book jungle vibe. The whole album is a complete trip, but every single song is also very solid and stands on its own.
There's a lot of songs on this album that I absolutely love, Space Ghost Coast to Coast is one of my favorite songs ever, I had no idea so many people hated it
Fantano (in one of his most off-base NOT GOOD's in recent memory, in my eyes) thought that Space Ghost ripped off Clarence Clarity's No Now. I don't really see the comparison between the two outside of maybe the bassline to "Those Who Can't, Cheat", and that isn't an exact match, either. Also, the Clarence Clarity project (another one of my personal favorites) basically made it a mission to cram as many samples and sounds as possible into one file, while Space Ghost does the complete opposite.
With Space Ghost, the references to GTA and Dre is about the blaming of video games and hip hop to school shootings, which unfortunately is a thing that happens. The song is about a friend he had in America that he heard had attempted a school shooting
If you're not expecting it, the lyrics can definitely be overwhelming if you don't know Glass Animals well because they're so different and weird but I think that's the beauty of them and more people not liking them or hating them makes them so much better. I always thought their lyrics were funny and I enjoy them and what they represent. Ironically, Dreamland is what got me into Glass Animals and made me a fan so it's funny to see other any fan of them say that this album was "disappointing." I heard Heat Waves before it got popular when it first came out and immediately fell in love. I had earlier songs by them on playlists but hardly listened to them, but I said what the hell one day and listened to Dreamland and it took me on a trip I couldn't believe. My favorites on this album are SGCTC, WCOYM, & IASIL. I love everything about this album, and that's what brought me to listening to the others and want to see them live.
I 100% agree with what you said. I had only heard heat waves but saw the cd in target and decided to give them a shot. I put it off for months but then I listened to the album and it was unlike any other experience I’ve ever had. I will admit, I ranked this album really high when I was first listening to it but now months later I can say I enjoy this album but I wouldn’t put it on a pedestal 🤣 the lyrics are also hilarious sometimes but definitely make more sense if you know what he’s singing about. I think older fans don’t like the album bc listening to this and HTBAHB are two different vibes (I haven’t listened to zaba yet). I went into HTBAHB thinking it’d be like Dreamland but it was quite different and I had a hard time enjoying it. But now it’s starting to grow on me. I’m guessing the older fans expected their weird funky sound instead of bubbly 808/trap beats lol
Also Brad, for the Domestic Bliss song, it is about him witnessing that from a family friend as a child and thinking to himself from his young pov of 'why won't she just leave, go to Hawai' but not knowing the nuance and complexities of not being able to just leave. It's a naive look through the eyes of a kid. That's kinda what the album does, the sections are about the stages of his life he sings from.
i'm begging you to give their second album how to be a human being a chance, it's was got me into glass animals and it genuinely has some very good songs (my favourites including life itself, pork soda, and season 2 episode 3). it hurts to hear them being called quirky indie pop because i think it's a really fun and unique album but i suppose if you're introduced to them through dreamland its an inevitable label (i didn't even like it much lol)
Also i think the concept for the album is about people being more comfortable telling strangers their more personal secrets/venting in a way, and that makes it much more interesting to me.
Brad, react to Gotye - Making Mirrors "Yes, is the guy of the Somebody I Used To Know song" this album is a masterpiece and Gotye is an amazing producer
I want him to react to Like Drawing Blood. That’s one of my favorite albums of all time and easily better than Making Mirrors imo. Although MM has a lot of great tracks too.
"Mediocre indie pop" Yeah this record sucks but please actually listen to the band, because their previous two records are legitimately good. They used to be incredible live too

Recording Bradley: It is 3:47 in the morning and I have a terrible headache and I have drank 16 liters of beer guess I gotta do this song review Bradley two days after: wow, the world really is so colorful. I love life and everyone in it :)
How to be a human being (their second album) is my favorite album of all time, almost every song is insanely good (except pork soda, it just rubs me the wrong way but its not horrible) but my absolute favorite song is poplar street, the amazing baseline combined with the all the small little intricacies make this my absolute favorite song of all time. the rest of the album while not as good also has some amazing songs with mama's gun, take a slice, and life itself. Another cool thing about the album is that every song is about a person they met on tour in America (of course all dramatized) but still I think that's a really cool concept, and if you review another Glass animals album this is the one (also the song golden antlers form one of their eps is cool)
I wanted to separate this out into a separate reply but everything I said about HTBAHB is opposite for dreamland, where on HTBAHB I love all but one song, I only like one song on dreamland (Tokyo drifting and only because Denzel Curry), where most songs on HTBAHB sounded grand and like it was telling a story, dreamland is constrained by the stupid trap beats and just sounds like incoherent garbage. 2/10 (the 2 is for the only 2 good things, Tokyo drifting and that one line in waterfalls coming out your mouth)
I love that the description says there is room for growth when their past albums are way better then this and they actually devolved with time. They had so much potential it sucks came out with this mid album after. I still love this band and I’m very hopeful for their future and hope this is just a dark spot in a great discography.
Domestic Bliss is supposed to be a bad perspective. It’s a child seeing violence that they don’t fully understand. From that perspective the song is tragic, since the protagonist is trying to make sense of it. Yeah I get if you’re looking at it from a grown perspective, it’s crap, but conceptually it works
"How do ya do fellow kids? Yo, the 90s were so lit! Popsicles in your freezer, twizzlers and tweezers. Kibbles and Weezer. Giggles and beepers. Your best friend remembered Columbine, shorts in your cupboard and fuschia twine. Mixing cran-ras with the lemon and lime. TRL and request line time."
One of the best music reviews I’ve seen on RUclips. Love how you listened to the album a second time to solidify your opinion. Made it super interesting to watch. If you have the time, I’d highly recommend How to Be a Human Being. It is a vastly superior Glass Animals album and happens to be my favorite album of all time.
i really hate that heat waves blew up because it's literally one of their worst songs😭 how to be a human being is my favorite album of theirs. you should definitely give it a listen !
I like Your Love (Deja Vu) and Heat Waves and admittedly Space Ghost is kind of my "guilty pleasures" (this original, not the terrible remix!). Because those are the only three songs worth listening to on this and they all remind me of the breakup I had the winter before this came out. The backlog is waaay better, especially the EPs (fave is Exxus) and Zaba.
Glass Animals is like throwing every pop culture reference from Barenaked Ladies, Mitch Hedberg, twenty one pilots, Ed Sheeran, The 1975, Bo Burnam & new Eminem into a blender, saying fuck it, and just chugging it down in one gulp.
I remember discovering Glass Animals when one of their songs was featured in Taken 3 and loved their second album and I liked this album when it came out and still do like it but its been such a roller coaster since heat waves blew up. I was ecstatic when it seemed like they were finally getting recognition they deserved then slowly I became sick of heat waves and now the hate that they are getting is very disappointing especially because barely anyone has heard their first 2 outings.
I actually love this album and love GA, but I really appreciated the way you reviewed it, it was really thoughtful and I enjoyed hearing your opinions. Thank you for giving them a chance!
Dreamland (the song) is supposed to be a contents list in the lyrics. The lyrics are all listing themes of the track list. That’s why the meta ending is what it is, it’s an intro
I never thought I’d be “that guy” and say X band’s most popular song is one of their worst (often pretentious, or a case of overplay which doesn’t bother me), but I genuinely believe it’s the case with Glass Animals. They’ve go so many better songs than Heat Waves.
Can you please react to their second album (How to be a human being) it truly is a masterpiece and will always be one of my favorite albums. Dreamland made them seem like a cringey band that's trying to hard but their sophomore album is very good and you will like them much more once you give it a listen (and their first album ZABA is good too)
I loved this album, but get why people don’t really like it. The Fantano stans definitely made it more hated. But disregarding how good ZABA and HTBAHB because of a dislike of this album is silly. ZABA is so unique and HTBAHB is great. You might not like either, but definitely recommend giving them a chance
12:50 it seems like you didn't pick up on the fact that these lyrics are ironic, they're supposed to be making fun of the people who make these arguments
Nothings will top Zaba, pls react to that album it’s the reason most of the fans became fans in the first place. It’s like taking a stroll through a dense jungle
Listen to Making Mirrors by Gotye! One of my favorites, dude uses a lot of variety and has some great moments on it. I think wether you like it or not it would be a really interesting video!
Listening to this i'd love to hear your opinion on how to be a human being. I absolutely hated dreamland but all of glass animals' projects prior to this are some of my favorite albums ever.
you should review the 1st and 2nd albums, they're pretty damn good. 1 has amazing soundscapes and 2 has just really interesting sounds and weaving things together
Yo Bradley. You wanna listen to a really good dreamy pop album that’s actually good? One that is filled with atmosphere and vibes. You should react or listen to Once Twice Melody by Beach House. So far it’s my second favorite of the year I can’t think of a single bad song. It has many shoegaze elements and etc. it’s a strong recommendation
This guy is right ^^ although it is a pretty long album so he could react to 1 chapter (4 songs) at a time, just like how it was slowly rolled out 1 chapter at a time. It gives room for the songs to grow and not blend together
For the next band you listen to, I would love to see you listen to Breaking Benjamin. They are a really good Hard Rock/Alt. Metal band that make really good music. If you do listen to them, Listen to either their album Ember (2018) or Dear Agony (2009). I love your reactions and keep up the great work dude! :D
Space ghost coast to coast is actually about his friend bringing a gun to school,so the doom, quake where you get that gun from eh was supposed to represent that famous school shooting
Lmao I have the exact same shirt you're wearing in the video In terms of this concept, Magdalena Bay's Mercurial World executes the concept of being in a dream much better. It truly takes you on a journey of pure bliss rather than putting you to sleep with a boring instrumental and stupid lyrics. You might recognize Secrets (Your Fire) from a previous stream which you gave it a smiley ball. You Lose, Chaeri, Dawning Of The Season, and The Beginning are also highlights. Highly recommend!
This record's biggest issues for me are the weird word vomit that feel like they are trying to create a mental image in your head and set a scene but it feels like "hey here's a random thing you might know from a certain point in time," as well as with the unfortunate case of the drummer's car accident 4 years prior I don't know if he was able to drum the way that most of these songs needed. In general this album needs some god damn bass or some punchy drums, it's part of why Tokyo Drifting actually kind of works.
I think it's interesting cuz this is one of their only albums that references the singers own life/experiences. The other albums are more storytelling (although the lyrics aren't super linear it's definitely more... Vibes) and this one is much more self referencial. Probably why the album was more controversial w/ the fans. I don't hate it mostly because I really like the singer's voice, but ZABA is a better album imo especially in terms of creativity.
To be fair all of ZABA also sounds very similar to itself so WITHIN the album it's a bit repetitive but I like the style so much that I actually like that it stays consistent
I would really like it if you reacted to How to Be a Human Being. I don’t really think it’s “mediocre indie pop crap” as you’re assuming it is. It has a ton of solid songs and a handful of fantastic songs. Only a couple skips imo. Each song is written from a different character on the album cover’s perspective and a bunch were based on real people the band met while on tour.
While I do love this album their second album, How to be a Human Being is so much better and has way more “risks” in it then this one or their first one, you’ve gotta listen to it
The lyrics of the songs relate to the experiences of the protagonist. Each song is a different story of his own experiences in life. I agree, it’s hit and miss, but it’s definitely better when you don’t take them literally or like a metaphor and more as a setting
I feel like with how Brad reacted to Dreamland, it would be interesting to see him react to the album The Rise & Fall of Loverboy by Sir Sly. It was a similar left turn in Sir Sly's discography, but personally, I think the risk they took worked out.
I'm glad you gave the album another listen. This was the hardest Glass Animals project for me to get into, but now I absolutely love a lot of the songs. One thing I'd like to mention - I think you were very unfair about Domestic Bliss. I realize that you couldn't tell this just by looking at the lyrics, but this song is from the perspective of a six-year-old Dave who had just witnessed domestic violence in a friend's family for the first time. "You have no fucking idea how difficult this actually is" is kind of the point of the song. He's singing from the POV of a scared kid, and it's not a reflection of how he sees the situation now. I think it's actually a really beautiful depiction of how a child perceives an abusive situation, and I find it cathartic to listen to.
for those that don't know Heat Wave's is so popular because of a Dream SMP fanfiction on AO3 of the same name that at some points crashed the website whenever the creator updated.
"you'd think for an artist who can literally go uh to the moon and back it would be a little bit more tied together" also brad: won't listen to the other albums because "i have no interest in listening to mediocre indie pop crap"
I'll die on the hill that heat waves only works best in the context of the album and your love definitely would have worked better as the single to get popular
I don't mind the tracks from the second and third album but I think their first album is masterpiece. A haunting, psychedelic, jungle inspired journey.
you should react to aurora! her ep infections of a different kind (step 1), as well as her album a different kind of human (step 2), are soooooooo good.
When people say it’s a fun and enjoyable beach song while I bawl my eyes out knowing who the song is about. It’s a very very sad song with a fun upbeat sound.
Thank you for taking the time to listen to it. This album may have been the worst NOT GOOD that Fantano ever gave out, and it's not all that close. I'm really happy for that band that this album was such a success for them overall despite that. I'm glad that you took the time with it and actually saw its artistic merits.
So like why weren’t you listening with headphones cause it hits different. Also Dave didn’t start singing til later in his life and I mean like college so he didn’t get that training you do when you’re a kid. Also domestic bliss is from the prospective of when he was a kid watching his friends mom in an abusive relationship.
I really do like this album even if I think it's the weakest one of theirs. Initially I was disappointed because it felt like a lot of bands I enjoyed were becoming maroon 5 and it had that feel to it with heat waves, but Dreamland grew on me. Great video!
100% agree with hating nerdy/nostalgic references in songs- I feel like they’re always thrown in to make the listener go “OMG I PLAYED SUPER MARIO TOO OMG OMG OMG” and clap their hands like a crazed chimp. It’s pandering in the worst way

God I can't wait to see this.
Edit: Holy shit this space ghost coast to coast rant is hilarious.
I really like the addition of future Brad, adds a layer to the review.
I really like this album. It’s solid and tells a great story. I know it’s not there best but I really loved it.
i really hate that heat waves blew up because it's literally one of their worst songs😭 how to be a human being is my favorite album of theirs. you should definitely give it a listen !
completely agree with this
This is Brad vs Brad the episode
I really appreciate the future Bradley stuff 👍
I remember seeing Glass Animals at Manchester Cathedral in Feb 2014, supporting St Vincent. It’s crazy how mainstream and popular they’ve got.
Bro I died at 21:39 the complete change of mind
“I have no interest in listening to mediocre indie pop crap”, _proceeds to pick the most indie pop crap album in there entire discography_
I never heard of this group until I started looking for the Space Ghost albums. I imagine y'all can guess what song I found, lol. Banger
I actually love this album and love GA, but I really appreciated the way you reviewed it, it was really thoughtful and I enjoyed hearing your opinions. Thank you for giving them a chance!
I love your channel Brad! Excellent reviews they really make me happy and get my mood up :D
I recommend Magdalena Bay: Mercurial World. Amazing Psych Pop album. Fantano gave it a 10 (I think, maybe a 9 I can't remember)
No he didn’t he gave it an 8. I think Artv gave it a 5/5 or something
SUCH AN AMAZING ALBUM.
I'm glad you mentioned this bc I've been listening to You Lose! on repeat at work all day today
@@shocken90 yeah you lose is great
Exactly what I'm about to recommend lmao
I already know he’s gonna hate it, but this is a great album
it really isn't, the album is so cookie cutter
@@Everhadduckmilk It is great, though.
I think the album is an acquired taste, but I don’t think it’s bad at all.
@@BradTasteInMusicOfficial How To Be a Human Being is good, Dreamland is meh
@@eich95 I agree with this
Dreamland (the song) is supposed to be a contents list in the lyrics.
I couldn't agree more!
And in how to be a human being too, i love that album a lot.
I like Heat Waves, but I do agree that they have made better.
Can you please react to their second album (How to be a human being) it truly is a masterpiece and will always be one of my favorite albums. Dreamland made them seem like a cringey band that's trying to hard but their sophomore album is very good and you will like them much more once you give it a listen (and their first album ZABA is good too)
People sleep on this album. I think they hear the pop and immediately write it off, but its a really heartfelt album imo, I love it
I loved this album, but get why people don’t really like it. The Fantano stans definitely made it more hated. But disregarding how good ZABA and HTBAHB because of a dislike of this album is silly. ZABA is so unique and HTBAHB is great. You might not like either, but definitely recommend giving them a chance
You should listen to their other two albums (they are both better) :)
12:50
it seems like you didn't pick up on the fact that these lyrics are ironic, they're supposed to be making fun of the people who make these arguments
I could tell, but I just didn't word it that well to show that. still thx
How to be a Human Being is their best album and is everything you ask them to do and be in this video.
Nothings will top Zaba, pls react to that album it’s the reason most of the fans became fans in the first place. It’s like taking a stroll through a dense jungle
Future Brad coming thru with the enlightened insight.
Space ghost is actually a true story
It gives room for the songs to grow and not blend together
i love this album! it's so soft boy sounding which i like
i quite appreciate the future bradley sections lol
For the next band you listen to, I would love to see you listen to Breaking Benjamin. They are a really good Hard Rock/Alt. Metal band that make really good music. If you do listen to them, Listen to either their album Ember (2018) or Dear Agony (2009). I love your reactions and keep up the great work dude! :D
legit bro that would be sick
He would hate them
Well, you never know
Space ghost coast to coast is actually about his friend bringing a gun to school,so the doom, quake where you get that gun from eh was supposed to represent that famous school shooting
Lmao I have the exact same shirt you're wearing in the video
In terms of this concept, Magdalena Bay's Mercurial World executes the concept of being in a dream much better. Highly recommend!
i have literally no idea what yall are on i think this album is fucking fantastic. dont take it too seriously its supposed to be hazy
What!? HTBAHB has no skips!
@@leonasty69 I usually skip premade sandwiches and take a slice but that’s just me
@@MarshallArtsDesign you skip Take a Slice? That's my favorite song off the album!
It was a similar left turn in Sir Sly's discography, but personally, I think the risk they took worked out.
i absolutely love this album !!!
Your shirt is awesome Bradley
Brad contradicting himself in the same vid is just hilarious
High effort video. Lets fucking go
What's the website he shows at the beginning of the video when he talks about this album not being well reviewed?
You should really listen to their first two LPs my man, they are amazing
for those that don't know Heat Wave's is so popular because of a Dream SMP fanfiction on AO3 of the same name that at some points crashed the website whenever the creator updated.
"you'd think for an artist who can literally go uh to the moon and back it would be a little bit more tied together"
also brad: won't listen to the other albums because "i have no interest in listening to mediocre indie pop crap"
I'll die on the hill that heat waves only works best in the context of the album and your love definitely would have worked better as the single to get popular
Well, the band thought so too! Heat Waves was actually the fourth single from the album
@@inkwisitive yeah I just wish it was the one that caught on :')
The fact that most people have no idea who heat waves is about therefore can’t understand it fully breaks my heart
How to be a human being by them is a much better experience
30:09
Why did it seem like you were held at gunshot to say that lmao
I don't mind the tracks from the second and third album but I think their first album is masterpiece. A haunting, psychedelic, jungle inspired journey.
I feel like the reason Dreamland isn't liked is because it doesn't take risks. That's why the earlier albums are liked.
I legitimately love this album from them, it isn't my favorite, their 2nd album 'How to be a human being' is their best work and sounds so good.
Their second album, How to be a Human Being, is actually fantastic, and one of my all time favs. You should totally listen to it
Heya Brad, I have an album rec for you, Long Season by Fishmans
you should react to aurora! her ep infections of a different kind (step 1), as well as her album a different kind of human (step 2), are soooooooo good.
can you review Fountains of Wayne
Welcome Interstate Managers or the new frank turner album please ?
Welcome Interstate Managers is a classic
Heat Waves is a summer pop song, it’s not there best but it’s fun and enjoyable at the beach
It’s pandering in the worst way
🙄
I feel like no one is actually listening to these songs. Its an album about the singers life, which goes over childhood, adolescence, and adulthood
Oh,god, wait till you discover Lemon Demon…
Honestly he’s so real for that
You should check out mercurial world by magdelena bay, it's a great synth-pop album!
even though you didn’t care for them, the closing songs, heatwaves and helium are the only songs I really like on this album lol
