    I see Brad's confusion, Jack Stauber's primary releases aren't necessarily meant to be experimental, they're essentially just Jack's interpretation of fairly traditional pop music. For more experimental ideas and execution he usually reserves that for Micropop singles and videos

    Jack Stauber’s career is sorta partitioned into two segments.
    On one hand he has his music under the name “Jack Stauber.” This synth-y music with his vocal inflection. The tone of this is generally serious.
    On the other hand, Jack Stauber is an animator that does work for Adult Swim. He mostly does horror-adjacent stuff. His animations are lauded for being experimental and very stylized. He also makes music for his animations under the name “Jack Stauber’s Micropop” These are more comedic in nature and a bit stylistically different.
    I personally am more of a fan of his animation work.

    I also highly recommend checking out his side project Jack Stauber's Micropop. It goes hard in the WEIRD direction, but the musical texture, which seems to be one of the things you enjoyed most in this album, comes out in full force there. It's not in albums except for the compilation "Micropop" but that's like 60 songs, instead he releases one or two singles at once in little packs.

    • @JoshucaVA
      @JoshucaVA 2 года назад +77

      Actually the Micropop album is 99 tracks that Jack released while he was in the hospital after his car crash. Most of them scrapped snippets. I kinda doubt Brad would enjoy that project as much though considering that each track is like 30 second ideas rather than full songs.
      The extended singles could be worth a video though. Those songs have a lot to analyze and get invested in. They are quite enjoyable.
      For the soundtrack releases (SHOP & OPAL), those are soundtracks y'know?

    His album after this, HiLo, goes for a less electronic sound, and has a weirder, more upbeat tone. There's one track that noticeably changes its sound 7 times in its 4 minute run time.
    Also, regarding the lyrics, Jack has stated that they make complete sense to him, and he wouldn't sing them if they didn't.

    • @DJDipstick
      @DJDipstick 2 года назад +64

      less electronic? i'd have to disagree, seems like hilo has a lot more distorted synth sounds and casio presets than pop food

    • @pizzarellayt

      @@DJDipstick I'm not really sure what I meant by less electronic either. I just saw a comment on the album saying that it's less electronic, and just agreed.

    • @pizzarellayt
      @pizzarellayt Год назад +22

      After a year of commenting this, this comment was not a good way of describing HiLo. I'll redo it now.
      His follow-up album, HiLo, adds to the sound that Pop Food provided, adding elements of funk, jazz and rock, while also using noise in a very effective way on tracks like It's Alright. Quite a few more switch-ups, but never anything that I think doesn't work (this is coming from a huge Jack Stauber fan.) Definitely worth checking out! Brad seem to have a big problem in tying to suppose the artist's intention in the beginning of this one. For me this album is just supposed to be chill and fun, not too out there or experimental, and it accomplishes that. If you set out the wrong expectations/misunderstand what the artist's trying to do, you may end up not enjoying a lot of stuff.

My only exposure to Stauber was Buttercup, which did eventually grow on me, but man, it took some getting used to. I was very nervous listening to Pop Food, but in the end, I ended up loving it, so it's really cool to see someone else have a similar experience!
    I don't want to instantly go "Now you gotta check out every little thing he's done!" or anything, but his animations and Micropop tunes are also really noteworthy, and especially the two TV specials he did for [adult swim], SHOP and OPAL. In relation to rock music, I think even on your own time you’d do well to check out Frank Iero and the Future Violents. The main singer was the guitarist for MCR and they’re influenced by a lot of classic rock sounds like the cure, which seems like something you’d enjoy. The vocal performances might be an acquired taste but the music is amazing.

    This video definitely put a smile on my face. Jack Stauber is one of my favorite artists of all time, but I was willing to bite the bullet and hear you criticize this album. The fact that you ended up liking his work just shows that Jack Stauber is far more than just a quirky tik tok boy.

    Jack's most recent album "HiLo" is much stronger than Pop Food imo. It can get excessively noisey occasionally, namely with the track "Pad Thai". But overall it has amazing songs and grooves. An amazing listen if you are checking out more of his stuff

    YAYYYY HE LIKED IT!!!! HiLo is better in my opinion, but me being a Jack Stauber fan, I'm suprised you liked this album MORE than me! (Still do really like Pop Food, I just find myself coming back to the first 5 tracks over any of the others)
    Might I also recommend the Zaki album? Zaki was a band that Jack ran for awhile. They released one pretty neat album.

    Jack stauber has always been underrated I feel. Today today by stauber is one of the few songs that made me cry. There’s something unique that only his music and music videos can make you feel and if you haven’t watched any of his music videos you definitely should as they are some of the most unique music videos a musician has ever made

    I found Jack's channel back in 2018 when he had 30k subs and was featured on YT's creator on the rise. It was his weird animations. He released Hilo album then, I decided to check out his music and I became a fan, listening to his album ever since 2018. Jack's music now takes me back to those times in 2018-2019.

    If there's anything about Jack, it's that his vision is unquestionable. Many people first heard about him after Buttercup went viral on TikTok. From there, it's easy to put him the same bag as other musicians cashing in on the quirky bedroom pop sound, but that's not the case. Seeing his animations first may help someone see that nothing of what he does is "empty", everything is 100% genuine, and that's what gives his mix of surreal absurdist lyrics with playful tunes and unique intonations all the appeal. I can't imagine another mind that could come up with the stuff he does under the Micropop name.

I listened to the chorus of butercup and oh klahoma in the background of random shit online, and was interested in listening to more, and this was a great way to do it. If you want some of his weirder fun tracks you should check out his Micropop album that is made up of 99 very short songs that are just fun/scary/and weird. He also has a few extended Micropop songs, which are pretty good and combine the synth and the weird. Glad you finally listen to him!

    Jack Stauber's lyrics are always a strange thing. They for sure all have so much meaning, he puts a lot of care into the songs he makes, but it's so vague that we can really find whatever meaning we want. His own meanings are hidden behind these simplistic lyrics, a lot of times being about loss, growing old, addiction, and depression. Songs such as My Plea - the character is asking people for money to fuel their addiction, an addiction that formed after they dropped out of school and decided to bar tend. At the same time, the song could be seen as such a goofy song when you look at it from the surface.
    It's totally understandable when people don't like the silly voices, but I really love them. It brings in character and (to me) symbolizes mania in such a way that otherwise can't be.
