Hello, thank you for putting Polish "Boot-leg" version :) I was one of the guy who helped to make this version come out, i was working on technical aspects in this translation. Thank you.
That's interesting! Was it difficult to work on the Polish translation?
@@MadPunkerz Hey, it wasn't at all. We used Hex Edit to read in-game files. The only one thing we needed to watch out was sentences lenght. It needed to has exact same amount of letters (bytes) like original file. But we did it good. I was the guy who had to work on PAL conversion but I needed to leave in the middle of project because I couldn't sit too much on computer because of my parents (I was 13 years old). Rest of my team (Ikskoks guy mainly) delivered NTSC version, and later years they made dubbing! With fans of the project on "Graj Po Polsku" forum where also on this site you can find many other fan translations from many games done by polish people. Now I am 27 years old, have a plenty of time - Maybe ill make a PAL conversion? Who knows.
Resolution of Medievil gameplay on the PS1 is not 480p and 576p! It is 240p and 288p.
PS1 games can't even go any higher than 480i and 576i (i for interlaced) because that's the highest that can be output in standard definition.
As the game was developed in England, using the Pal fps, the Pal version actually runs at the correct speed, while NTSC is too fast. This is pretty uncommon, as most games are made in Japan or USA first and then down converted for the Pal region. This issue was mostly corrected for the NTSC release for the second game.
That's really interesting, thank you for your comment
The effort out into this is insane, well done
A bit late to this video but I'm so glad you made it as it caught my attention to try the japanese version of the game and do some digging for myself and watch the video after. I had missed some details you pointed out, but there's one thing that might have been misunderstood.
In the Japanese version of the game, Dan's helmet works sort of like a difficulty setting. Having it on keeps damage from most, if not all enemies the same as all other versions. If you take the helmet off, it makes Dan take more damage from enemies. I tested this with the Asylum zombies while the helmet was on and they only dealt 50 hp, and while having the helmet off they deal 100 hp per hit.
I will say when I found this out, I was quite surprised and even decided to do a full no-helmet run of the game and it makes things very difficult, especially on levels like Pumpkin Gorge and Ghost ship.
Thank you for pointing this out, I didn't test that detail
in PAL you can set fire to a haystack with a burning club, in NTSC you cannot. did not check in japanese
WHAT?? I cut that part from the video because I thought that there was a glitch in my emulator that prevented me from setting the haystacks on fire on NTSC!!!
I honestly don't remember if that happens on the JP version as well.
Thank you very much for your feedback!
@@MadPunkerz Sony released only one game in Russia - Medievil 2. To get acquainted with the rest of the library, we had to hack consoles. The stores sold translated (in a nasal voice, like VHS) games from any region. My haystack was on fire, my friend didn't. It was very surprising for me. The pirates also swapped cup rewards, and the level with the lake was freezing. After many years, I learned that there are different regions of the playstation. Our TVs supported many operating modes. I had Sony, Panasonic and Samsung TVs, the console worked everywhere with disks from different regions.
@@ГлебРостов That's really interesting.
Did you get the PAL or NTSC version?
@@MadPunkerz We often changed discs. As a result, I had PAL in my hands, where awards were given out incorrectly, the haystack could burn, the level with the lake was not loaded. Then I sold the console along with almost all the games. It was a long time ago, for about $100. I seem to remember everything correctly. (Anton, Ruslan and Alex, return my CDs, ahaha)
@@ГлебРостов Друзья лучше вернуть тебе твои игры, лол.
Anyway thank you for your comments, I will add those details in the video
This probably took a helluva lot of work, thanks for it! This was very insightful
I'm a PAL player. I've had a whole 100% run of the Japanese version once, but I can barely recall the last time I picked up NTSC-U MediEvil
Nice video, also pro tip I realise in my last playthrough but see no one mentionned it, while equipping the Dragon Armor unequipped ant shield you would have equipped when you select it.... you can actually just reequipped the shield right after and so you can have the Shield while using the Dragon Armor ^^
21:50 is there no healing well at the end of the level in the jp version?
30:59 in the ps4 remake if Dan has the free dlc helmet AND the dragon armor, Dan loses 1 hp every second or so making it possible to die in the hall of hero’s and once you die in the hall of hero’s it boots you to dans crypt, just a fun glitch that I think I’m the only person who knows about it.
Another small thing that I’m sure I’m the only one who noticed, but in hilltop mausoleum in the room with the two statues holding up the stained glass demon’s heart in the PS1 game There is a gap in the left and right wall, the left one has a copper shield while the right is empty, there is only a gap in the left wall in the ps4 remake with no hole in the right wall.
14:08 15:03 15:38 Because you aren't wearing a helmet that is purely cosmetical again.
16:18 21:31 23:35 This is because you desided to put it on😂.
6:03 WRONG! Taking the helmet off makes you take double damage.
There is also Medievil in Russian. It has a lot of mistakes in dub and translation.
8:03 That's because you aren't wearing helmet.
The lore about Tim being a woman is stupid.
Very very good comparison 👍
Pal boys
pal/ntsc dan is the best :)
This video is soo goood, as a big medievil fan I really appreciate your hard work. Thank you for this!
Thank you
Trophies added for this classic.
It's amazing work!
20:00 werent the brown robe monks just in the beta version? Then they made the into white robes everywhere. If you watch the beta playthrough they even have a weird chant
That's interesting, I didn't know this
sei un grande
Cool compilation! Lots of little details l never noticed in the Japanese version! And, a lot of obvious details l completely forgot about. How'd l not take note of that final level's icon?! My memory's fading...
that's some long video! interesting, i had no idea of these differences. the whole helmet is so odd. i heard of american censoring JP games like castlevania IV, but this is new to me
I LOVE dan!
Aaaah Medievil
Improbabile, secondo me
nice video
I think zombies do more damage when the helmet is off.
Enemies in the JP version usually deal more damage than in the western versions, I don't think the helmet will help you
@@MadPunkerzJust try putting it on lol.
