What are your thoughts on The Gentlemen Bastards ?
Eh i liked the first book but i don't think i loved it enough to continue with the series
I love the series and the characters! Will continue when the next is released.
Spoiler warning.......
However, I find that I’m getting aggravated with the continuous tease of the “Elders”. We are 3 books in...we need more info.
I can’t decide if this is a mega slow build by Lynch or if he’s planning on leaving us hanging perpetually.
Regardless, it’s becoming distracting for me.
After you recommend it , I heard the audiobook. It was fantastic.
I loved the first book, though I had to put it up and come back to it later because of the starting pacing. The same thing is happening for me right now in the second book, but I’m definitely going to get through the first three before the next comes out
I am currently trying to make my way through it. So far, i'm not really invested in the characters. Caldo and Galdo seem like the best most interesting, and they get almost no screentime. Plus, both the women in the series (all two of them) are spoken about -- it is hinted that they exist -- but we don't really get to see them. Of course, i'm only about halfway through the book. I have to finish it though, i have to find out how the bastards resolve things with the Grey King.
The dialogue alone is some of the best you'll ever see in a series. As a writer myself it makes me almost physically angry reading how perfect it is.
What have you written may I know
@@perspectiVe- I'm working on getting my book published right now. Will most likely be called Return of the Mercenary.
@@seancain2216 fuck yeah good luck mate will keep an eye out
Did you ever get that book published? If so lmk I’ll definitely give it a read!
I haven't watched the video. The man is right. Read the books, they're fantastic. Time for the video.
i had a hard time getting into the first one and almost put it down several times. things took a complete turn about 150/200 pages in and now it's one of my favorite series of all time. it still haunts me how close i was to just giving up on it haha
Same! It took me at least one false start before I actually got into it... now I'm INFINITELY glad I didn't give up.
@@ramywilesi don't like to encourage people to keep trying- if you're not enjoying a book you should just move on IMO. this is the one very strong exception haha
Lol, I literally had the same experience at about 150 pages in. When the story took its first drastic turn, it got me with a broad smile.
I feel the same way!
I
(sighs)
Welp, that's another book on my TBR. I'll add it to the pile...
Don't worry, there's only 3 (so far....=p)
Duty is heaver than a mountain;)
@@hoidtakesopioids I'm not sure how many I have, but it's probably a only slightly less than what you have.
I know that feeling....
I know, right!? I should stop watching Daniel's videos, the maye my TBR list even bigger
"Nice bird, a**hole." One of my favorite Locke quotes 😂😂 Laughed out loud so many times with these books. The dialogue is amazing, the plot is great. I didnt like the 2nd and 3rd book as much, but I think it was partially my expectations of it were not what they should have been. Cant wait for the Thorn of Emberlain to come out!
Same man, I laughed so hard, my favorite quotes. Love the build up
@@sadade32 Yes! Locke's sarcasm along with Jean, Calo and Galdo's witty and sometimes just plain ridiculous comebacks is half of what made the story for me
Yeah, I loved the scenes when they were just like chilling, having some dinner, and talking; they were so hilarious!
Chains: do NOT disrespect the bondsmage
Locke: NICE BIRD ASSHOLE
When I read that I laughed so hard 😭 I tried to send it to my friends that haven’t read The Lies of Locke Lamora and they didn’t think it was funny...what fools.
I love Locke and Jean! I can't wait to find out more about Locke's history. I found it hard to believe that The Lies of Locke Lamora was Lynch's first novel. Everyone should read it and I must say that I was happy to find out that other people like it just as much as I do!
Definitely had a slower start than I expected. Took me about halfway through the book to start caring about Locke or Jean. Cared more about Bug to be honest, but after the first half... I’m hooked, utterly enthralled. About 1/3 left to go!
BUUUUUUUGGGG
@@EC-vw6pd I love him too.
Uh oh
So I’m not the only one, I was about to DNF it because I didn’t see the hype. Perhaps I’ll continue it now
Oh no...
I bought the books on Daniel's recommendation, he's right
Same! I got the first one and just finished. Holy crap. Emotional gut punches for sure!
Me too! Halfway through The Republic of Thieves. God I love this series, it's just brilliant. Thank you Daniel!
I've read them and love them. I agree with everything you said and can't wait for the next entry. I think the relationship between locke and jean is one of the best and most realistic I've ever read
Gentleman bastards was the shit & I am so looking forward to the fourth installment. Instantly became one of my favorite series thanks to your recommendation in the first place making me check it out, thanks for that btw
So happy I could help you find it. Talk about TONE
We still are sadly 😭
Alot of people are saying that they had a hard time getting into the first book but honestly I loved it from front to back
Same
Same, it's SOO COOOOLLL!!!
I started reading after you recommended this series in one of your vids. I’m nearly finished the first and it’s amazing so you have my thanks for talking about it.
Side point of advice: so far the first book here has made an excellent palette cleanser for me after finishing the first Mistborn trilogy. Something atmospheric enough for me to enjoy greatly without being so dense I have to focus aggressively on the little mysteries and what not. Not to mention the levity helps me to relax a bit more.
Commenting on every video untill Greene Daniel is released. Video number 35.
Thank you, someone who has a broad reach of the fantasy genre promoting/defining one of the best series I have ever read is wonderful to see. I love all the books and I can't wait until the new release.
I read The Lies of Locke Lamora a few weeks ago. It was one of my favorite reads so far. It was fun, it was interesting, it was gut wrenching, it was amazing.
These books are my heart. I picked of The Lies of Locke Lamora after hearing that it was about thieves. Thieves doing thief things is pretty much a guaranteed win of a trope for my reading tastes, as I always love reading about it. What I wasn't prepared for was the FEELS trip I was about to go on. The heists are infinitely clever and wonderful, of course, but I feel in love with the atmosphere, the gritty danger, and my dear, dear Locke and Jean. I rave about these books to anyone that will listen to me, hoping more people read them. I devoured the whole series in under two weeks because I simply could not put them down. I cannot wait for the next installment.
I would, but Im still gonna wait until it's finished. I just hate getting wrapped up in a story and then having to wait for years for the conclusion.
Alright I finally got around to the Gentlemen Bastards series and wow. I have been missing out for so long. Nobody can swear quiet like Scott Lynch. The narrator also killed it.
ive only read Lies so far, but ive also done the audio, and the Narrator is amazing and does what great Narrators do and thats give it an additional dimension on top of an already amazing story.
I hope Scott Lynch is doing well and can finish the series as soon as hes able.
Thanks to you vehemently advertising it at almost every chance you can, the first book was added to the 16 books I already bought on my last trip to York. The additonal weight I had to carry up the 4th floor better be worth it! Looking forward to read it very much!
I LOVE the series so much, I’m starting book 3 so when book 4 comes out in October I’m ready! One of the best series I’ve read in a long time, Locke and Jean are just so badass and I’m constantly yelling at them. The brilliance of the writing makes these plots and characters come alive. Can’t wait to get my hands on book 4.
Lol “when the next book comes out in October”, Scott seems to be of the George RR Martin school of not writing it would appear.
@@allthenewsordeath5772 I know
Gentlemen Bastards is definitely in my top 5 favorite series.
Just bought the first book in the series on audible! The way you describe the series reminds me of the Riyria books by Michael J. Sullivan.
It's exponentially better than the Riyria books, I would equate the Riryia books to like a Jr high creative writing project to the GBs being a graduate school level piece. The difference is huge between them, imo
I read them just based upon your recommendation!
Danny had become a force in the industry! 🥸
I read lies last year due to your recommendations. I completely love that book. How connected I felt to each character was insane. So good.
I just want to take a moment to appreciate the background music. I love it.
I have to say it; Thank you for introducing me to this. This was very different from most things I've read.
you definitely have this series move up on my TBR. this year i got back into reading, but the last few months i realized i love fantasy!
Also, You also seem hilarious and fun...kinda like my personality. LOL
Thanks for this video!
I have so many books to read..... Now there is another one. Thanks for the great videos by the way. Your the gold standard of booktubers.
One of the best books in fantasy I have ever enjoyed. The twists and explanations of how everything went down, makes the book a "wow" factor. You close the book thinking, how can he top that? He does!
You sold me when you said it’s about thieves, murderers, and their relationship.
I’m all for action when it’s done right and when it moves the plot, but I love dialogue and character growth much more than all that. This seems like a series for me. Thanks for the recommendation!
Okay let's pick it up, I was going to put it into my tbr list but watching this video I can't wait to get started.
I've had Lies of Locke Lamora sitting on my shelf for a while now. Just finished it and loved it! Great Recommendation :)
Okay, you've convinced me. I've been looking for a new fantasy series to start. This one sounds perfect.
Probably some of the best writing I've ever read, period. I've been feeling a growing urge to reread these books lately... this isn't helping :')
Just finished the 1st book. Absolutely loved it. And as you mention, there are plenty of bits of great humour amidst the action and drama.
I am listening to book three on Audible. It is a fantastic series with some of the best and amusing dialog I have seen in a book series.
You should read the two Hawk & Fisher collections, they tread very similar waters (grimy criminal underbelly of a sprawling fantasy city). They probably aren't as well known because they are from the late 80s, but the writing is superb and reading Locke Lamora often felt like a longer Hawk & Fisher tale.
Picked up the 3 Audiobooks of the Gentleman Bastards after finishing the Wheel of Time. The narrator does a fantastic job, love it, great purchase.
Ive been looking online to find what new books i wanna get to read, and usually ill come across some deadpan review, but this, this is how you sell a book
Currently am reading oathbringer (which is amazing) but I can’t wait to read gentlemen bastards as soon as I finish
Brilliant series, Scott Lynch is one of my favorites. Hes not building A WORLD, so to speak, hes building THEIR world and we discover more and more as they travel through it and that approach is both beautiful and very realistic in a way.
Really well put - Such an impressive world. A great example of showing bigger isn't always better
Picked the three books up today. Going to start them tomorrow - can’t wait
this video convinced me to start the gentlemen bastards but decided to go audiobook. the narration is adding alot to the experience for me. it's still really early for me but looking forward to appreciating this work as much as everyone praises it.
I started listening to the audio book on your recommendation and am loving it right now. I personally don't care about spoilers and know the the general plot already but the writing is so good that it still super suspenseful seeing how it plays out. I normally read pretty fast, so having the audiobook slow me down to enjoy the atmosphere has really added to my experience.
I loved the books, its probably one of the best characters in fantasy I've read in a long time. I am normally more drawn into world building and strong story series, but Daniel is correct - the characters and their 'bro-mance' is what really reels you in. The flash backs seem to be a strong suit for Lynch, and you'll see him use this throughout the series. Also if you have a love of Renaissance/Venetian type backdrops, you'll love this. Not to lay it on too thick, but this was also my #2 audio book in my Audible library and the voicing is spot on. Buy both! I wish Scott Lynch well and await more of his works.
Just got the audio book for the lies of Locke Lamora because you keep bringing it up ....no regrets it was amazing thank you for shining a light on the book omfg I loved it I’m hooked
Halfway through The Lies of Locke Lamora and absolutely loving it! Perfect recommendation. Already becoming an obsession! Thanks Daniel!
After GRRRM and Rothfuss' disappearing act, I'm apprehensive to start another fantasy series that appears it my not ever be finished. Only reason I started Stormlight is because Sanderson is a machine with his writing pace.
I'm listening to the book now because of your rec. The descriptions are great, hoping to like the characters soon. Only 2:30 hours in.
100% agree with you there, everything said was on point, this series is up on my top 3 favourite fantasy series 👍
Just finished the first book & have started the second. As stated in the video, full of dark humor & well-written camaraderie. There were, indeed, some scenes where I laughed out loud...there were also a couple of scenes that made me physically flinch because of their brutality. Two thumbs up.
Just started reading the first book!! Story's ambiance is perfect for this coming winter season.
I just finished book one like two days ago and I sent this to my friend to try to convince her to read it too because I will not suffer alone, damn it.
One thing that I find uniquely wonderful about this series is that despite how contained the story is, the world still feels very vast and very lived in. The longer it went on, the more so it felt almost... homey. Like you got familiar with the areas that the characters were familiar with and the parts that they weren't felt as equally dangerous or awe inspiring for the reader. And I just kind of think that's neat
My all time favourite ever. Still waiting for it to blow up in mainstream book communities so i have people to talk to about it
Starting it this afternoon and your review has got me fired up for it, Daniel 😊
ah, i found the first book on sale in my local bookshop just yesterday! i loved the title, so i couldn't leave it, I'm glad (and i hope) that i won't be disappointed!
My absolute favorite book characters I’ve read in the last few years. Not necessarily the best books, though I really enjoy them, Locke and Jean are the most fun and most interesting to follow.
Wonderful video as usual! And about an absolutely amazing modern fantasy series no less. Read meow, and get through that first hump. You will not regret it.
For those who don't always have the time for physical reading, I have found the first installment of the series to be ESPECIALLY awesome as an audiobook. The narration is absolutely top notch, and it is clear that the narrator has an in depth knowledge of the story based on his tone and inflection throughout.
One of the best fantasy books
I picked up the audio book cause of your review. I'm half way through it. You were so right. THANK YOU
So good! I read this last year based on your top 10 fantasy list. I'm reading the First Law books now.
Just picked it up today, currently on page 60. Seems like a slow start so far, but I think it’s going to get really intense! Can’t wait!
I'm working my way through Oathbringer. Once I'm done with that, the Lies of Locke Lamora is in the que.
Ok so I have just finished Red Sister by Mark Lawrence yesterday. Amazing fun fantasy series by the way. So literally was stuck on what to read next... I just could not decide at all. Was between The Blade Itself, The Dragon Reborn and The Lies of Locke Lamora. You have convinced me good sir. Gonna start my Gentlemen Bastards journey tonight :)
I listened to the audiobooks (due to Dan's recommendation a while back). Absolutely fantastic series, I'm very excited for more. It's a very nice counter-weight to series such as WOT and SLA. Could not recommend hard enough.
Well I bought the book, promise I will read it. Just finishing up Clash of Kings.
It's on my TBR because you mention it often but I'm still so new to fantasy that I don't think I can justify bumping it up over things like The Black Company, Farseer trilogy, or the Earthsea cycle

Red Seas Under Red Skies
I started listening to the audiobook this week, and I’m not connecting that much, but I do loooove the writing of it. So I’ll start actually reading it as soon as exam season leaves me. Specially after this video😉
I appreciate your recommendation on The First Law series, I’m on book 2 and am enjoying it more than the 1st book. Definitely going to check this one out soon
Just finished The Lies of Locke Lamora and absolutely loved it. Highly recommend it!
So far every suggestion u gave in your review I simply enjoyed it... so heres to the next book on my list.. thanks as always for an awesome review.
I already have it on my audible library, I'll just have to start listening to it soon
Do you follow text? I don't get how people just listen to books and soak in the information
I have the first 3 books sitting on my shelf and I'm very excited to read them, the first one will probably be my next read!
Your and Merphy Napier's videos compelled me to get a copy. Thank you for the recommendation!
Hey I just bought this book after you recommended it and I saw it in the store. I'm enjoying it and am excited to explore the characters more!
I've seen the books and have played with the idea of buying them but I have so many series I'm into I wasn't sure I wanted to start another. After watching this video though I'll definitely check it out.
Michael Page narrates the audiobook and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Although I love Locke and Jean, Father Chains is my all time favorite simply because of his dialogue.
Starting today! Ty for the low down
Read it because of you. I went like 6 months ago to the US to visit friends, bought Lies, then bought the other 2, I ate the books in less than a month. Great characters and setting to emphathize even thoughit might a seem dire and dark place.
Seas is my fav though, probably because i was already invested in the guys, probably should do a re-read... when im done with WoT.. Haha..
Great video! I loved the first book so much but have yet to pick up Red Seas Under Red Skies. I’ll be changing that soon.
I usually like royalty crap with princess and princess, kings queens and all that stuff but I decided to give this a go.
I finished the trilogy last week on audible and I honestly feel so lost now. The book was amazing. Probably the best dialogue I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening too and it was funny. I highly reccomend it.
I'm about to start book 3. first book was incredible... locke vs the bondsmagi was EPIC. The second book was pretty good but I almost got lost keeping the three sets of characters. The ending was circular but good, and totally Locke. Excited to start book 3...
I've listened to the series on Audiobooks twice now. Such a expertly written series, I laughed out loud as well at some parts. (Sansa twins)
Do you highly recommend the audio version, and prefer to read?
Check out The Black Company by Glenn Cook. It is one of the best series I have ever read. It is a military fantasy series told from the point of view of the Medic of a mercenary group called The Black Company. These guys fight for the highest bidder, irregardless of whether the boss is good or evil, and their new boss is quite evil. Check it out I recommend it to everyone.
I tried to read the first book multiple times and for some reason never got into it. Ended up listening to the audiobook and just binged-listened to all three in a month!
I thanks for the recomendation, really liked those but I hope those guys catch a break sometime soon
thank you for getting me into this series! just finished book 3 and i am crazy hooked!
Are book 2 and 3 as good as book 1?
@@katelynss8495 i loved them but book two has a slightly different vibe then book one and three.
“I sounded like a snobby asshole there.” LOLOLOL! That actually made me snort and laugh out loud. :D Thank you, been a bad day and that’s my first laugh of the day. :)
I’ll give it a try, for I also, am morally compromised.
Just started it off your regular recommendations, love it so far
I agree with you about how great this series is. I only have two issues with it: (1) pirates are cliche at this point, (2) the first three books are essentially a prequel for an epic fantasy series that will probably never be written for...reasons, mumble mumble, RothfusMartin mumble.
Lies of Locke is in my top 10 favorite books. I loved every moment of it....almost a perfect a book. I'm about 22% through Red Seas. It's good, but not as good (so far) as Lies. I will read Republic as well and am excited that book 4 is slated soon. When I read a book in a series, I tend to jump to something else and then come back. I don't like to binge it. It's like a fine wine...better drank slowly.
Have you accepted Locke Lamora as your lord and savior?
As soon as I'm done with WOT (currently on my first read) I think I'm going to pick up this series.
I hate that i can't get on with this series, but that said i am still new to the genre, so i think its possible that i can go back to it.I had the same feeling with Abercrombie, it just wasn't the right time, i had just finished WOT, i wanted something darker, it just wasn't the series to follow that.....But have since gotten into it..... who knows, this video is selling it to me though....
You've have made put The Gentlemens Bastards on my to be read ASAP list.
Right after I finish Stormlight(Oathbringer) as my before the sleep read and Raven as my "light" for comute read.
Possibly Mistborn and then on to The Gentlemens Bastards.
