    It's retro-futurism. It's how people in the 50s-60s imagined the future would look like. The games were very inspired by 50s sci-fi b-movies, mad max, a boy and his dog and such. The series really captured the atmosphere, humor and violence of the games! Almost all the songs in the show are also in the games.

      @@AFMountaineer2000 Pretty much what danielk highlighted. The history of the Fallout universe was pretty much a reflection of our own history up until 1969 when things started to Diverge. For example in 1969 the United States reorganizes into thirteen commonwealths adopting a new flag that we see throughout all the Fallout games. The same year Valiant 11 lands on the moon with USSA astronauts Richard Wade, Mark Garris, and Michael Hagen become the first humans to walk on the Moon.
      I should point out that in 1961 Captain Carl Bell of the United States Space Agency becomes the first human in space (according to the U.S Government) but his capsule crashed while returning to Earth killing him. This could be scene as the divergence as well but 1969 is when a bunch of historical events happened that differ from our own history.

      oh they did get micro processors invented ... liek a week before the bombs fell they finnaly had a microprocessor. also Mr. House from fall out new vegas had some microproessors of his own developed prior to the war happening . in fact delivering the processor he hade made before the war, was the courier's job in the game before benny stole it.
      granted the nucelar devestation of the world prevented them from ever going into wide scale use . it would still be more technically correct to say they never mass produced microprocessors.

    The Fallout games, specially 3, New Vegas and 4 are actually very story-driven, but also very non-linear, because there is so much to, so many quest lines and side quests, all with their own little dramas.
    But the main arc is always very story driven and compelling.
    As the fans usually say: no one plays Fallout for the graphics.

In fact, they were entirely story driven, and very much linear compared to the standard Bethesda gaming experience. Also, despite the fact they are quite old now. In relative terms, they are both better games than what any of the Bethesda fallout games were. That is to say, if you judge them in the time they released, they stood out more than when the Bethesda games released. The only one that really comes close to them is New Vegas, and Bethesda didn't make that one.

    • @jhmi7877
      @jhmi7877 3 месяца назад +1

      Yeah, I was going to say, who thinks Fallout is not story-driven? It sometimes tells stories a bit differently from many story-driven games out there, sure. Such as using the environment heavily for providing information to where heaps of trash or old posters on the wall give you details about events and characters (much like how anthropologists piece together human history through similar means, probably part of why I love the Fallout world so much). Or, like you said, the story is also non-linear so it again doesn't follow a lot of what other RPGs do. But all that definitely adds to its story-driven nature instead of away from it.
      Just a bit confused why anyone would say that who say they're a fan of the games XD I guess they can just be a fan of the themes and not pay attention to the narrative at all.

  • @wanderingidle4848
    @wanderingidle4848 4 месяца назад +4

    This has to be the best video game adaptation ever made. Fallout is an open world RPG, so while each game is set in the same world, the choices you make determine how the story unfolds for your unique character. There are often dialogue choices where you're given options of how to respond, which will send your character down a different story path, and in the show this is really subtly represented by how how each of the characters pause for a few seconds any time they're faced with a big decision. Every time Lucy says "okey dokie" that's her having just made one of those narrative decisions.
    Each character also begins with certain stats that you choose at the beginning, and which increase the more you use them, and that's shown by Lucy going over her different hobbies and jobs when applying for marriage. You can kind of guess the other characters' stats. Maximus has high endurance and HP because he always gets beat up but can still get back up, but he has low charisma (e.g. he tries to haggle for a lower price but has to go sell a tooth instead). The ghoul basically has maxed out stats because he's been alive for so long (i.e. played the game longer than everyone else).
    It's also funny you pointing out how unrealistic it is that the Santa Monica pier would still be standing. That's one of the things in the games that always made me laugh. Obviously they need to have recognizable landmarks in whatever city each game is set in, but sometimes it's so comically absurd that some of these things are still standing that it's basically a self-aware joke.

    I think it's probable that the scientist is a member of the company that built the Vaults and that they maintained a distant vigil on them. They know which Vault has which specific resources and which part of the World they are designed to emulate (or at least which part of North America).
    On a side note I did a tiny bit of searching and it turns out that in the Fallout Universe, at some point Canada and the U.S. became one massive Nation. I may have misread this next part, but to my understanding it was AFTER 2077 when the bombs fell. at some point in order to re-establish a line of communication and Government a new Coalition was formed which included Canada and the Northern most States.

    • @ArchivMichVideiDavidLechman

      I think the scientist was a member of the ENCLAVE a group that is considered as remnants of "US Government and Military". In the wasteland they are considered the most dangerous and dreaded organization that wanted to kill off all survivors of the Great War and start a new civilization. They are the most secret and oldest organization in post war wasteland. In Fallout 2 you even met a president of the Enclave and destroyed their base at Navarro and at the Oil Rig off the coast of San Francisco making their influence in the western american wasteland very low. But they have another bunkers and bases all across the american wastes.
      P.S "US Government and Military" that is a lie established by the ENCLAVE propaganda in truth they are just descendants of the rich assholes that controlled the US Government from shadows. Big CEOs and their families build many private shelters for themselfs across the USA. US was controlled by these defacto "Corporate Overlords" in their shadow council. Vault-tec, West-tec and many more corporations were involved in this "Enclave" program. It is very ironic because soldiers and other members of the enclave aren't even that evil they just were born into service to country that died more than two hundred years ago and from early childhood were indoctrinated to believe that everything in the wasteland is mutated and in need to be killed and as true americans they need to reclaim what was lost to them. They are misled into believing that what they are doing is right.
      P.S.S And yes Canada And Mexico are annexed into the United States. Canada is one big frozen wasteland scourged by endless nuclear winter and gangs. Mexico is dry and dead desert scourged by radioactive storms and remnants of the cartels and gangs. Basically all of northern america is a lawless wasteland now before these TV series were a newly formed nations named NCR "Republic of New California" and Ceasar's Legion. NCR was a nation holding on unto the old world values of democracy and freedom of speech but they were corrupt to hell and many members of the NCR congress were rich assholes and criminals. They were doomed to repeat the same mistakes people like them made before the war. Ceasar's Legion was a slave state that were lead by brutality, endless conflict and cult of personality. But they were technophobes and very heavily against drugs and alcohol. They were doomed to fail when their leader Ceasar was heavily ill {could be dead} {you in fallout new vegas could save him from death} {I always killed the slaving bastard. sic semper tyrannis}. They were the only functional states in the wasteland that is North America. Enclave and Brotherhood are paramilitaries and don't want govern over the survivors or the survivors won't let them.

    Michael Emerson’s character with the dog is a scientist from an organization called the Enclave, the villains of fallouts 2 and 3. Any evil the brotherhood has inflicted is nothing compared to the goals of the enclave. It seems our scientist has had a change of heart about the organization. Even if he didn’t have that chip in his head, people would still want him because he was a member of the enclave. There are people who rightfully hunt enclave members like the folks who hunted nazis after wwii, and that’s probably for the best. Plus the enclave is known to have advanced tech, and he’s a scientist, so he’s valuable in that regard too.
    It’s funny you made the nazi comparison to the Brotherhood, because the Brotherhood got all its helicopters from the Enclave after defeating their genocidal scheme. In Fallout 4, you can find an ex-brotherhood knight who said he left the organization after its victory over the Enclave changed them; he basically said the Brotherhood defeated the Enclave only to turn into them.

      And that is because of Arthur Maxson. The old Elder of the East Brotherhood was a nice old guy named Owyn Lyons that wanted to help and protect innocent people some members of the brotherhood left the organization in self imposed exile until he died and Arthur Maxson became the Elder because well he is a descendant of the Creator of the Brotherhood his grand-grandfather was US National Guard Captain Roger Maxson. The only guy that brotherhood venerates by calling him "the General". They changed from group that wanted to protect mankind against dangers of technology and FEV mutations to basically beign an Enclave copy cats. Well in west to coast the Enclave Remnants are becoming even more liked because after the fall of the their leadership they all went AWOL and started doing their own thing some left for the east and some became soldiers of fortune.
      P.S. and ENCLAVE was only defeated at west coast of USA they have many more bases across the wasteland and one is in ruins of Chicago. And brotherhood did not defeat them they only captured the Navarro army base from them it was us in Fallout 2 that destroyed their base at OIL RIG off the coast of San Francisco a hero Named CHOSEN ONE a descendant of the MIGHTY VAULT DWELLER a hero we played as in Fallout 1. ENCLAVE is a group that is considered as remnants of "US Government and Military". "US Government and Military" that is a lie established by the ENCLAVE propaganda in truth they are just descendants of the rich assholes that controlled the US Government from shadows.

    It is my understanding that the show "The Last of Us" is directly adapted from the storyline of the video game with those characters. This TV show (Fallout) is based on the lore and universe of the Fallout games but not directly using the main (playable) characters of the games.

      If they had used one or more of our playable characters it would be incredible hard for them to even make this show. Because two of player character mainly vault dweller [fallout 1] and chosen one [fallout 2] could be dead and vault dweller from vault 101 [fallout 3] is in space. That would only make the courier be candidate for this TV show. But that is not point i need to make we created the apperience and chosen a gender for our characters in these games the only cannon known apperience for character was in fallout 1 and his name was Albert Cole. he has to be dead by the time this TV shows's story begins.

    You nailed it. Coop was the original poster boy for vault tec. And it just makes sense, a hyper prolific actor and celeb of the current time thats going to sell so many vaults so quickly. Obviously though with capitalism morphing into what it did in this time and the events we will see in future episodes vault tec either pushed cooper out or he stepped away voluntarily which was when they animated coop into what we all know as todays vault boy.

    They really did a great job with the lead characters.
    Lucy is perfect for people new to the franchise to be introduced through. In all the numbered games you play someone from a vault who is new to the wasteland, just like her.
    Cooper (The Ghoul) is perfect for experienced players to see the show through, because many of us have played through 160 years of history in the wasteland.
    Max is a sympathetic Brotherhood character, which is getting harder and harder to find these days, because so many of them are like Titus.
    Dogmeat finally gets an origin story, which I really liked.

    I’m not sure how to say it but I feel like the fact the games are open world and take place over a huge stretch of time gives the writers more leeway to make something unique that fans will enjoy. With a game like Halo everyone that plays them knows the story and if they deviate from that it’s gonna be judged harshly. Fallout you can pick a time period and if you get the tone and overall details correct so that it feels like the games universe you can do your own thing.

    • @okreylos
      @okreylos 4 месяца назад +4

      I'd say it's representative of how many if not most people play the games. Start the story, then get permanently side-tracked, spend hundreds of hours ransacking the wasteland and doing random quests, then maybe finish the story at some point. It's definitely different than, say, The Last of Us, which is a linear story from point A to point B.

    • @hurraylolth
      @hurraylolth 4 месяца назад +2

      I would say that Fallout is definitely a setting more so than a story. Although every game has, for the most part, very good main stories as well. But I think we could expand on her statement from Tyler and extrapolate that maybe he just meant that Fallout as a whole is a setting first, and stories in the setting second.

      @@okreylos That description fits the newer Fallout games by Bethesda more, which is understandably the common perception. Fallout 1 and 2 involve a lot of reading and dialogue though, and require reading to progress the game and story, which are not really optional as you will literally lose the game if you ignore the main story. New Vegas is also arguably one of the most dialogue choice and story heavy open world games ever made.
