Golfing is a real-world sport that has been replicated in the digital realm for almost as long as video games have existed themselves. These virtual golfing experiences each offer some kind of unique twist on the sport, with no game being just like any other. In the third bonus level of a flash game called Red Ball 2, there is a short golfing minigame that certainly stands out from the pack. Rather than trying to obtain a low number of strokes, the goal of the level is simply to roll the golf ball to the end of the level as fast as possible. Speedrunners initially took little interest in playing the golfing challenge, but its exploded following a sequence of extremely real events that happened at the start of 2021. In this video, we will explore the history of the speed golfing world record record of level 23 of Red Ball 2.

You do raise an interesting new possibility within the speedrunning community - namely according the owner of the fastest run of any given game at midnight on 31st December the title World Champion for the following year. The leader board will always remain the most important thing - but the scramble for the Title WC might make for some interesting activity over the Christmas/New Year period
"World Champion" is a title that can really only be given by some kind of tournament. For NES Tetris, there is a high score leaderboard, but to become the "World Champion" for a given year, you have to win the Classic Tetris World Championship.
