    We have done the opposite and gone from a motorhome to a v dub. Found it so much easier to park and more fun to drive. Having said that there is just the 2 of us. Really depends on what suit the individual . Happy camping guys.

      Similar to us except we went from V dub, to motorchome to Vivaro, just hated driving the motorhome. Couldn't wait to get there and park the damn thing. The Vauxhall is a joy to drive, just like a car, maybe better.

    Comprehensive video. We had a large Carthago years ago. Over 3.5 tons so couldn’t enter many towns in France and couldn’t park anywhere in the UK. Downsized to Autosleeper Peugeot boxer conversion. Fitted on drive but still had problems parking in towns or car parks. Sold up 5 years ago. Now buying a T6.1 conversion so that it fits on the drive and we can park nearly everywhere. We weighed up the pros and cons of MH v. camper and decided that in our case, the camper met our needs for flexibility. Yes, not so fully featured as a MH and lacks the toilet, but that is a downside we’re going to accept so that we can take day trips, short breaks and perhaps longer breaks in UK and Europe. We loved the motor homes but felt constrained in our choices of where to go, so we sold up. Having had the experience, the camper van is our new choice, even though there are negatives, at least we are aware and not naive about the issues. Thank you for making a very useful video.

      @@LiveforTravel Hi. The Carthago was in a class of its own but was a monster to drive and my wife would never drive it. The Autosleeper was well specd but I never felt cosy in it. It was a Warwick Duo so the bed could be a double or 2 singles. That was also too big for my wife and we struggled to get on and off the drive when cars were parked on both sides of the road. Now with the pandemic, my wife wanted to be able to get out and about and she discovered that a few of her pals have campervans. So we went for it. She has driven a Toyota Picnic MPV in the past and that is probably about the size of the T6, so she can not only drive it, she’ll be able to go off on trips in convoy with her pals. We certainly had some interesting trips and Scotland was great fun, but we always felt that we were stuck on campsites as we don’t cycle and not great walkers. The campervan is hopefully going to allow us to get out and about and to take more flexible breaks. Good luck with your motor home.

      @@Skeitintouch yes my wife doesn’t really want to drive our 5.99m Roller Team. The campervan is so much more flexible with regards using as a daily and trips away. If there were just 2 of us I am sure we would consider another. We wish you many happy trips in your camper.

    I made a mistake with my first camper van, the Ed was too high and as it was 5.45 m it was to cramped. The one I have now is more like a motor home, it’s the Elddis Autoquest CV60 and almost perfect. I’d like a bigger wet room but I guess you can’t have everything. Thanks for a great video.

    Most people would use their Camper/Motor home a lot less than a car so fuel consumption (cost) will be less of an issue than for other forms of motorised transport. From what I see the power output of the 102 engine can be easily upgraded to about 160 and fuel consumption is only affected to the extent that you use those extra horses. For me the main issue to consider would be the difference in driving experience with a VW van being much more like a car and less like a truck.

    • @LiveforTravel
      @LiveforTravel  2 года назад

      Agree the Transporter will drive more like a car and could be used as a daily. The fuel consumption is relative to those who choose it to be as it regularly gets commented on in the groups I follow.

    I think insulation is a must. It will also make the van a lot quieter to drive, less noise you can hear from the outside and less noise people will hear from you while you are inside. Not to mention less hearing and cooling needed.

    Not got to the end, but it definitely looks like a pice of trim, I found in my fiat Ducato based van, when I was cruising at 58mph I'd get 36mpg, UpTo 60mph and it dropped dramatically, just cruise along steady, no need to rush! Mine wasn't automatic, I'd definitely look into a t590 automatic! My camper was a 6m home and had the electric underfloor heating which I think you'll have and it's very nice, works excellent! Look at a keppler one VW they fitted a toilet and a shower in a VW t6!

    • @LiveforTravel
      @LiveforTravel  4 года назад

      Malcolm Rowe it was the chassis number cover on the side as you get into the driver’s seat next to door. We would be happy with 36mpg and yes I will check on the difference from 55ish and 60. It is amazing how just such a small change can make a big saving and not actually take much longer to get there either. Yes I remember looking at a T6 with a toilet at the back when we went to the NEC show in February. Fantastic for the actual size of the van. We still haven’t tried the heating yet so interested to see where it actually does it. Yes, the auto in the 590 is fantastic. Thanks for your comments 😊

    Hi we bought our new Cali end of last year and only managed 3 trips out before lockdown kicked in. Having watched hundreds of campervan vids on here, we fell in love with the idea too but as you say reality is not quite the same. Having spent close to 63k then all the extras Awning Cali topper screen cover toilet etc etc we have spent a small fortune. Our main issue was we could not fit a 6 metre van on our drive and did not want to go down the storage route and as you ocd on vehicle cleaning maintaining etc. So got the Cali, it is a absolutely incredible vehicle quality second to non fit and finish first class, but it's small and we have to use an awning to give us enough room. My concerns with a MH was being able to clean maintain it off site, as I feel the roof and seals would need inspection on a regular basis. Our neighbour has purchased the same MH as you and yes it looks lovely. Enjoy you new van and cannot wait to watch your vids on using it.

    • @LiveforTravel
      @LiveforTravel  4 года назад

      Robert Oxley we feel there are too many “Vanlife is Awesome” videos on RUclips and we are currently planning a “Vanlife is Great.....for some” video to try and bring down the level by a notch. The California (apology for forgetting the name in the video) looks a fantastic piece of engineering and we are certain you will get to enjoy more once a little more normality comes. Ironically, we purchased the Camper King van (which was really nice...... but no California!) because we didn’t want to spend £ 60,000 on a vehicle and we wanted to be able to park it in the garage. We appreciate what you say around storage of a vehicle and to be honest, the fact that it is 15 minutes away does make it harder to go and clean and prepare it, sometimes means we travel 15 minutes in the wrong direction before starting our holiday and (apart of course from the added cost) makes me at least sometimes feel we don’t own the van! The investment both yourselves and us have made is not one we want to give up on or lose money with. If having the van at your home address is the compromise that you would prefer than having a bathroom then absolutely stick with the Cali. As we said, they look wonderful (and privately, I still look at them today 😊) but we think everything with van life has compromises and it is down to each person’s needs to decide which are the compromises they are willing to make. For us, we probably watched exactly the same videos as you before we purchased our camper but quickly realised that under the shiny veneer of “amazing” there were realities and hidden expenses that we didn’t consider. I am always happy to admit I was naive, and I was. Sincere thanks for watching our video and your comments. The bathroom is not always so important, particularly if there are no kids in the vehicle and you are staying, like us, at campsites with wonderful facilities and the freedom your Cali will give you to travel cannot be underestimated. 👍

    I have had a caravan since 2005 and they are a similar size and layout to a motorhome. I still have the caravan, but leave it down in Cornwall at a lovely site.
    I decided to build my own campervan with pop top and I prefer it over the caravan. I would just prefer it to be a bit longer. We looked a motorhomes, but just feel we are getting into similar realms to a caravan, where you need to tow a car or use a car to tow a caravan. For the reason I much prefer a campervan, but it has to have a pop top.

    • @LiveforTravel
      @LiveforTravel  2 года назад

      I miss our pop top although currently with the kids enjoying the holidays too the motorhome is more logical. We always say we admire those who build their own camper. Although doubtless hard work it must be real satisfying and in the unlikely event that something does go wrong, who better to know how to repair it.

To make it more comfortable I picked up 2 awnings. A large one for longer stays (Vango Cove II) and a smaller one for 1 night or weekend stays (Kampa Trip Air). An awning makes all the difference and I think you said you never used yours. Whoever bought it from you must have got a bargain. The big difference is the lack of adventure for motorhomes/owners. So many sit in their vans all days watching TV, you can't go to hard to get places, so it's pretty boring and they are just not nice to drive. We have a Vauxhall Vivaro which is a better van than the VWs, plenty fast enough and gets us anywhere a car can go...and some. Our previous VW motorhome was awful to drive, as you say it's a house on wheels, NEVER AGAIN.

    • @LiveforTravel
      @LiveforTravel  Год назад

      I always suggest to people it is about what compromises you are prepared for. Whichever van someone chooses there are always compromises.

    • @allanb52
      @allanb52 Год назад

      @@LiveforTravel Life is about compromises. We live in central Portugal, a great country to have a campervan, long summers, cool by the coast, all friendly, clean, cheap and safe. They have some free campervan parks here and the people in motorhomes stay in their vans a lot more than the campervan owners and quite often you don't see them at all. It makes the whole experience quite unsociable and that is the point I am trying to make. Maybe it is a European thing, but I think people do it because they can, sit indoors and watch TV.. Because travelling is more difficult and expensive they travel less and they are worried about getting stuck in the many narrow village streets.

    We are also in very similar circumstances. Although we don't have any young children, just the two of us and the dog for trips I'm at a point of do I or don't I swap from the T6 to a Motorhome.
    Lots of things to consider as I would need to use it as a runabout for shopping trips, not work, we are retired. I have found the R&R bed OK, its just a pain if like you one of us has to get up in the night.
    We had caravans before the T6 but I got a bit wary of towing them, hated the hitching up but it was ok once on site. Emptying the toilet cassett is a doddle as you will find when you do it.
    We tend to stay on sights with facilities but its no fun nipping to the bog at 3am and its persising down. We would also loose quite a few bob on the trade in I'm sure as we have only had the van just over a year. Decisions decisions!!!!!

    • @LiveforTravel
      @LiveforTravel  4 года назад

      Yes decisions and I think each one might include a few compromises. The T6 is definitely easier for shopping trips etc although our sub 6m MoHo might be a little easier fitting into parking bays than some of the longer versions.
      We wanted a bit more space and flexibility with the separate kitchen and more importantly the bathroom. The main reason we did move to the new van was indeed the bathroom. We love the separate shower in lieu of one that works above a toilet.
      We will see how we get on with ours but already love the additional light and room.

    No perfect option, but we find our van quick enough to get ready for a day out from site. We dont have a pop top though just a hi top.

      algothedon absolutely agree. The fact is that there are some compromises with any choice and it is basically a decision as to which ones we are going to accept 😊 thanks for your comments.

    So now I’m hooked on your videos! Really useful in helping us choose our first. Thankyou. We’ve tried the Camper King and it didn’t suit, and we had sort of settled on the AT Tribute F62, but we’re liking this Roller Team more! Quick question. We’re only sleeping two, so how high is the top of the mattress when the bed is fully down? Do you know? Thanks again - good job! Peter

      Peter Busby we love our van but there are so many different ones to choose. We think the bed goes down to the seat base level. We will check. Actually, we are shortly putting a shout out video asking viewers to ask us anything about the van. We will add your question to the list and show in a future video. Many thanks for your comments.

    If i may ask what was the difference in the 2 prices between the van and the motorhome ?

    • @LiveforTravel
      @LiveforTravel  2 года назад +1

      There are so many manufacturers and options for both it is difficult to answer. A van could easily cost £50-£60k and a Motorhome that costs under £40k. It is very dependent on your preferred manufacturer and your personal requirements.

    Did you buy the VW then the Motorhome in same year ? I used to have a VW T5 conversion for 6years then bought a 6.2metreSwift 622 MH as we liked the rear lounge..loved the T5 but the extra storage and comforts eg with WC and sink shower we really enjoy

    • @LiveforTravel
      @LiveforTravel  3 года назад +1

      Yes we purchased our T6 in 2019 and sold it March 2020. We did really enjoy the VW but the lack of a bathroom, which we knew before ordering but realised how important it was, meant we decided to move to a Motorhome. Thanks for your comments.

    Great video, especially as we are in a similar situation. We've currently got a camper king conversion and looking to move to a motorhome. We've been looking at the pegaso 590 as it has a very similar layout to the t line, apart from the bed drops down over the cab and a little more storage. Having seen your great review of the t line, I'm not sure whether it's worth spending the extra £7k. My only concern is my hubby is 6 ft 4 in - would he be able to stand up under the drop down bed do you think?

    • @LiveforTravel
      @LiveforTravel  3 года назад +2

      Yes very similar to us! The drop down bed, when raised to its highest, is ok for me at 5’ 10” but there is not sufficient space for someone taller so would need to duck a little which I would imagine could be a nuisance. For us we love ours but understand (and love) the Pegaso also. It is a difficult one. Without trying to put you or anyone off the Pegaso (which we wouldn’t ever do as it is personal choice) my concerns with one, apart from the 7K you mentioned, would be the cost and availability of the windscreen and the external mirrors. These items can be easily damaged and are both specific to the vehicle. I have read posts from people complaining about the delays (and cost) when trying to get replacements. With the windscreen, which is also bespoke, I have a little knowledge and experience with as I worked 29 years in the automotive glazing industry. As a Product Manager we hated these sort of bespoke items because they are in limited supply and more expensive. Manufacturers of vehicles are only obliged to ensure parts are available for 10 years after final production. The standard vehicle uses the Fiat Ducato windscreen and mirrors and will therefore be cheaper and wreadily available as they are sold all across Europe and even in the US (although theirs are badged Dodge). Many thanks for your comments and support. We wish you many happy travels in whichever one you choose.

    I am currently researching my options regarding the purchase of a campervan/van conversion (ie mercedes sprinter) or a pre built motorhome. At the moment I can't decide between the three options. I want a vehicle that is flexible enough to go anywhere any time, however due to my health conditions (back problems, dodgy knees etc) I need a fixed bed. The reason for wanting a campervan/motorhome is that I have always wanted to travel the coast of Britain and potentially Europe and to document my journey using photography/video and a blog/diary. I would be doing this on my own, ie no passengers. Do you have any thoughts on what I should be looking for/at?
    By the way, I also live in the Midlands so any recommendations on where to go to look at options would be appreciated 😊 I have already visited camper King and Coast2Coast to look at campers but don't know of any van conversion/moterhome specialists.

      Mr G Shave it is in our opinion always going to be a case of which compromises are the least. For us, the van with 2 kids and no toilet proved to be just not quite what we felt we needed. Our Motorhome was purchased from Cranham Leisure in Essex because we ordered it at the NEC show.
      Our MoHo is only 6 metres in length (5.99 to be exact) and although we went for the compromised garage to gain a bigger bathroom and habitation area there are plenty with fixed beds at the rear. We just felt the bathroom being at the side (on a shorter van) made it feel smaller when inside.
      There is a descent site just off the A38 that I have look around. Don Ammot leisure www.leisurekingdom.co.uk/location
      Many thanks for watching and we hope you get the right van for you very soon. 👍

    Did you consider a bigger van conversion. As I have already told you I find myself in a similar position to you. I’m now thinking about a bigger van conversion. The fiat ducato autotrail conversion for example. Did you consider this size conversion and what do you think?

    • @LiveforTravel
      @LiveforTravel  4 года назад +1

      ian sharp Yes we did and had a good look around, poking and prodding, many of them at the NEC show. For us, we felt having the restricted width with a van conversion which is naturally limited by the base van’s size, made it feel a little small still with 2 adults and 2 children. Also, the vehicles we saw, which were really lovely to be fair, also had part of the side door blocked by cabinets.
      We think everything has its compromises. We decided after quite extensive research and physically looking around lots of options that the coach built Motorhome offered what we wanted. They are a little more limited of course if you plan to use them as a daily vehicle (although ours which is just under 6 metres parks quite happily in car parks so long as we pick a corner slot) but when we are actually staying in it, it just feels more light and spacious.
      Many thanks for your comments 👍

    I think perhaps you chose the wrong campervan. Auto-sleepers have campers under 5.5m with a proper bathroom and a cooker with oven and grill and have made these for over 30 years.

    • @LiveforTravel
      @LiveforTravel  4 года назад

      Jim Ferguson we hoped our campervan would work for us based around being able to park it through our garage (2.1m in height). Hindsight is a wonderful thing but we learnt that the bathroom was more important. We looked at Auto-sleepers (and others) but the height of them are 2640mm so would not fit in the garage. Once you discount a vehicle fitting in the garage and accept the need to keep it in secure storage the options increase dramatically. The Auto-sleeper costs £ 58,300 which is actually slightly more than our a Roller Team and does not offer the space in width or height that we have found in the last few days to be invaluable. Many thanks for your comments.

      @@LiveforTravel Thanks for your reply. After caravanning for 32 years when we retired we bought a flat and the Auto-sleeper fits the flat's parking spaces. It is also great as a day van easy to park and with your own loo. Too dear new but found them so well made that, second hand, they still look like new - although still comparatively expensive. Different things work for different people. Great video enjoy your coachbuilt. Jim

      Jim Ferguson thank you. Yes we love many vans and just hope the Roller Team works for us, particularly with having 2 kids. Of course the closer you get to van size the easier it is to use daily. Our VW could have been used as the only vehicle. Having seen the Auto-sleepers they do look very well built and doubtless will last you many years 👍
