I went to Thailand a few years ago when I was 17 and they were more than fine with underage drinking. On the Khao San road in Bangkok there were even bars which said "We accept fake ID" and people selling them opposite, police didn't care.
I lived in Thailand for 2 years as it seems you have also Thailand. I still spend about 70 days a year there. I have a Thai Girlfriend so I spend a lot of time in Bangkok. I have a few "Things not to do" and a few comments about what you mentioned. Some may be just a personal thing and not a legal thing. Some may be a cultural thing that some uptight people follow to the point of being just stupid. Also Thailand is a very Male orientated society. Males first kind of thing so some laws or customs may be for Women only.
1. In 2014/15 I heard they passed a law that foreigners didn't have to carry their passport but it's always a good idea to carry a copy.
2. Overstay. You mentioned 500 Baht fine for each day over. I overstayed one day. I went to immigration a few days before to get extended. An Immigration Officer told me it was not problem no fine, no delay at the Airport. Turned out it wasn't exactly true. There was no fine but I was pulled aside by an Immigration Officer who seemed a bit upset, a new arrival card completed, slapped on the wrist and told never do this again. I have made several border runs on a few I was a day late and I was charged 500 baht. A friend over stayed months. He turned his self in, was arrested, went to court, put on a plane in handcuffs and sent home. My advice obviously is don't over stay.
3. Going Commando. I was told it was women that couldn't go commando. Some skirts were very short so use your imagination why there is a law.
4. Being Loud. This may be true for some people. But like many Countries loud people in a bar are annoying but if Thai's hate noise so much why do they allow vehicles driving around with a loud speak mounted on top blaring loud advertisements for some product or the next Muay Thai Fight?
5. As someone mentioned previously, Jet Ski's. If you rent one on the beach be sure to inspect it thoroughly. A little scratch in it from something previously may get blamed on you. Goes for motorbikes also.
6. Standing on money. may or may not be a law, I really don't know but from a cultural standpoint it can be a no no. This has to do with respect towards the King. The stupid thing about this is I've talked to a Thai man. He said it was stupid, Thai's don't seem to consider a man putting money in a wallet in his back pocket next to his Ass or a woman sticking money in her Bra next to her breast. In Thailand it seems Ignorance is bliss.
7. Seems like only someone living and working at a temple knows this. My Thai friends didn't know. Stepping on a shadow cast by a Buddha Statue is disrespectful.
8. Definitely talking bad about the Royal Family can get you in trouble.
9. Pointing your toes at someone is like saying "F_ck You!" Okay I can understand intentionally pointing your toes can bad but when this is stupid is when it's unintentional. I was once laying in a floor with my feet pointing towards the TV. The King came on and my then wife said I needed to move my feet as I was pointing my toes at the King. To me this is stupid.
It is 500 per day up to 20000 Max. as far as lengthy overstay - 20000 Baht is the MAX no matter how long you overstay! Just an FYI! However if caught you will be jailed and you will have to return to your country of origin (not just a country of your choice, this is part of immigration law), and have a ticket or get one before you are escorted to the airport by the Immigration authority, once at the airport you will remain in a holding cell, and walked to the gate, by an immigration officer, to make sure you get on the plane. If you do not have or cannot obtain an airline ticket home, you remain in jail until you do so. (learned the above from experience) also just an FYI, you can and should contact your embassy, they will in the case of U.S. citizens give you a repatriation loan, and that will get you a ticket back home, which will have to be repaid, with extremely high interest, and your passport will be reduced to 1 year, after you have repaid the loan, trust me, DO NOT OVERSTAY your visa in Thailand, even 1 day will get you 2-3 months in jail, before you are deported, Thai jail is no joke, it is not the Hilton, it is hot, food is terrible, and you will regret ever letting your visa lapse, and may get robbed of your valuables on the first day you are there (again I witnessed this happen, I speak Thai, so I avoided that) there is no Air-Con, no mattress to sleep on, just a hard cement floor and do to the lack of space you may be in a cell made for 20 people, but will have 30-40 people in it. I know I pained a bleak picture here, but it is a fact .

About the Buddha statues and pictures, I´m pretty sure that the law is only about antiques. There are a lot of brand new, mass produced Buddha items in Thailand that you are allowed to bring home.
That's what i suspected.
I brought a rather large Thai brass Buddha statue from Singapore to Manila with not the slightest problem.

No images of Buddha are legally allowed out and no Buddha tattoos. Thailand is 98% Buddhist and a friendly place that commands respect and honesty or...don't go there.

Thailand is once again under the rule of a military dictatorship, which no one voted for.
Problems for the government in Thailand started when they tried paying poor farmworkers more for their rice. This only works if those buying rice accept a smaller profit. This is never the case. Thailand couldn't sell its rice, so couldn't then pay its farmers.
Same thing is happening in the Western world. People want more pay than their job is worth. This is ok, pay a minimum wage of whatever you like, but don't expect that you'll be in business long as you won't be able to compete with lower paying competitors.

A king of Thailand once stated that every Thai should have a certain amount of rai to farm rice and a pond to raise fish. That way all Thais should be happy with their life and no Thai would go hungry. Unfortunately, people aspire to improve their lives and that of their children. How could they achieve this under such a system?
A communist would say exactly the same thing as this king. But always, those at the top have a better life, a better life earned from the hard work of those poorer people in society.

Thank you for going true some laws in Thailand . its always great to get a reminder. Some of them are easy, but if 10 Pound falls on the floor, you normally step on it. Its smart to remember that its not ok to do that. And to make fun or do anything bad to the picture of the Royal family is not a good idea. have a nice week. As Thais, I personally never heard about No.6. That’s so funny! Honestly, most of the things you have mentioned here are more about our norms rather than law. Drug is definitely illegal, not only in my country but the other as well. If you want to take risk, you shouldn’t blame. Also, you know police is always tricky in every country cuz money is the only thing they want. So....what I would love to suggest you guys are respecting our culture and following their rules. True. I was sitting in a bar in Pattya, happily vaping away one night. An Australian guy came over and told me how his friend was caught walking down the street vaping, and was hauled off to jail and paid an exhorbitant fine. Convinced, I broke my vow not to smoke and switched to conventional cigarettes for the remainder of the trip.

Good advice about being a lad and loud mouthed. I'm from Australia and we too don't like too much loud mouthed carrying on. We may have the reputation thirty years ago but we are not like that really. Especially now with so many Asians we keep very quiet in public.
The thing is we aren't as unified as the Thais so many lads think while away having fun with no one telling them to keep it down it is ok.
I think anyone going to any other country should always be respectful of the locals. Too often it's young people testing their freedom for the first time and end up getting into trouble.

Hi, Im Malaysian... I have been to Thailand 20-30 times. Staying there for over 4 months. There is one BIGGEST rule you should be very aware of. Cutting the jungle (logging) is the consider biggest crime of all. You re stealing from the King and the people.
If you re caught with a chainsaw in a jungle...Believe me, you'll pray that you get caught with one illegal .38 or 9mm gun in your pocket rathet than a chainsaw.
I heard hunting is also consider biggest crime... because there are certain forest which is declare King's Land.
In southern Thailand, there are insurgency. Please be careful not to talk about some history if Southern Thailand.... just consider every walls have ears. Thank you.
Also if you're hunting there the police or jungle law enforcement unit can shoot you dead due to you having firearm on you

Wrong you can buy and carry out Buddha statue, art, jewelry with Buddha image on it. I had a 4 foot tall stone carved Buddha statue shipped from Thailand to USA. It’s just ancient antiques that you should not purchase and try to take out of the country.

The notion when those laws were put in place was that a woman should be a virgin until she was married. If suspected of sex before marriage, a woman would be required to allow a clergyman and a midwife examine her genitals to verify that her "maiden head" was intact. To say the least, it was a bizarre and archaic set of laws to have on the books in the 2000s.
In France, it's not allowed to smoke in all indoor public places, it's forbidden to phone when driving and it is strongly advised not to comment on women's shape :-)

You can go to a kodak photo/copy shop and they will make a wallet size copy of your passport ID page and the visa/entry stamp on the reverse side for around 100baht. This should suffice for most ID purposes.

A photo on my phone suffices for most ID purpose tbh.
it is much easy to make a picture of your passport; Page with your name and picture; picture of stamps ( visa) ant the one you get by entering Thailand and the little note you need to get out of thailand and make a little map in your cellphone ( and tablet too) - If you behave yourself the police do not ask you about your passport ( or iD)
I'm aware of these laws but for someone who isn't this is a great informational vlog! Number 10 is never a problem for me, I prefer the quiet spots away from tourists.

Regarding overstaying, correct it is a fine of 500b per day..to a maximum of 20000b. So if you overstayed for say 55 days the most they can fine you is 20000b. Some I/O's will try it on and want to ping you 500b for each of the 55 days, but that is not the law and you can refuse.

They are serious about the less majesty laws in Thailand. You can be put in jail for even saying true things that are not flattering of royalty. Even clicking a like button on Facebook or RUclips can land you on the wrong side of the law there.

Freedom of speech is ONLY on paper. I personally know people who have almost gone to jail for paining a canvas at an occupy gathering back when that was a thing.. Then they later told me about it.. They got 2 years of probation and were told if they tell anyone they'll actually go to jail. The people with green cards got their green cards taken away and deported on the spot.
Also have hear of acquaintances who upon coming back to the country got their phone broken into at the airport and got into a lot of trouble for liking anti american govt things on Facebook..

To add my personal experience here. in 2000 I came in from Malaysia and sailed to Phuket. Because I came overland you only get 14 days VISA and so not knowing I actually overstayed 14 days, before I went to the immigration to apply for another 14 days. I followed the procedure but when the immigration agents realized that I had overstayed my Visa by 14 days, he dropped everything and stood up from his chair and shouted at me, calling me an illegal alien and wanted me jailed immediately, unless I paid a fine of 75oo baht. I was not even allowed to go to a teller machine. I did not have that much cash on me, and it was only through the generosity of my Dutch friend who happen to have that much cash with him to deposit in his bank, that I was released and able to avoid detention. No Joke guys, this is serious. I was told of foreigners being hauled in Jail at the Airport because they did not have the money to pay the fines. Cheers

I'm Swedish but live in koh lanta, Thailand since about 5 years now and the best way to stay safe is to just be polite, use common sense, a helmet if you drive mc, and try to smile and be discrete with about everything and you'll be fine. The police likes to relax with ganja too so at the end of the day... They're only humans and if you like to for example smoke some weed?.. Just be polite, descrete and respectful. You're probably gonna get many real Thai friends who'll open up their real lives then and with friends you're gonna feel and be more secure and you can be OK if you do something wrong by mistake. But the no 1 I learned is that they're VERY proud people and they love to have farang friends who doesn't try to play mangas
All these things that you have listed here, are neither strange nor unusual, nor unexpected IF - and, sadly, this is a very big IF - you have been correctly brought up and somebody has taken care of teaching you GOOD MANNERS. Enough said.
We always bring a Buddha statue back with us, (not an antique), and we have them blessed at the Temple, we are Buddhists and we use them for worship at home in the UK. Never had a problem in over 25 journeys.

Note.....thai authorities will now detain if you over stay. The 500 THB fine at the airport are long gone. Overstaying now costs a lot of money and you will end up in an immigration centre.

Keep a photo of your passport on your phone. In many cases, such as ID for a club, this will be sufficient, although obviously it’ll be at the discretion of the person you’re dealing with

In Cuba, one of the rudest things you could possibly do is blow your nose in public. Also, talking bad about the government can get you kicked out and banned from the country. The drinking age in Cuba is 17 but rarely implemented.

It is an ID (driver's license) but I am a resident. Also your comment is correct about drugs and for people that think they can. The tourist areas dealers may inform the police. Note the 500 day fine for an overstay is limited up to 20,000 BHT.

VERY VERY IMPORTANT:
When packing your bags for your holidays in Thailand NEVER forget to bring your BRAIN along.
Some Thai laws and some Thai traditions, are much more similar to your own then you expect, if you visit any country assuming the contrary, respectfully, i would suggest that it would be more appropriate that you limit your excursions to your local attractions....
What Scotty advises any visitors to Thailand, I would believe that, reasonably , would mirror any advises he would give any visitors to his own country.
P.S. even when visiting your local attractions , it is expected that you bring your BRAIN along.

Most of those laws would be applicable in UK either legally or morally. The only odd ones were driving topless, leaving the country with a bhudda and carrying ID. In UK we're more relaxed about actual drug use, we're not going to jail for carrying small amounts for personal use unless there's previous history, so it's a good reminder not all countries are so tolerant. I read if you are in Thailand and you leave the day your time expires, you can fly to another country nearby for a day or two, then you can come back for another month. Is that true? read it's easier than getting an extension on your stay

Less BS in Vietnam? Are you shitting me? Vietnam is scam central. You can't walk ten feet without being harassed within ten miles of a tourist attraction. I was there for two months and within a week was wearing headphones, sunglasses and low slung hat and ignoring everyone who tried to talk to me. You will get cheated at virtually ever opportunity. Thailand is way more developed, has way more experience with foreigners and, sure has it's own scam problems, but Thailand is an easy no brainer between the two. 5% of tourists return to Vietnam for a 2nd visit. Thailand has a 40% return rate.

I knew about some of the laws, but a few I didn't 👍 also good advice on being loud and boisterous, I've seen a couple of ugly situations there were foreigners got into confrontations with Thais and it all started with people just basically not being respectful. Like you said, have fun but be chill about things and enjoy.
speaking of laws that are not really enforced but are still on the books, did you know that the law against Adultery is still on the books here in Canada, even though a person cannot be sent to jail anymore, but the law against it has not been taken away, how far we have come from the time when if you were caught committing adultery, you could go to jail,
and in the far past in Europe, people actually got the death penalty for Adultery, good thing that isn't any longer in forced, or there would be even fewer Europeans then there are, being as they don't have children hardly any more and they are very immoral,

In the last 17 years of coming to Thailand; 1-5 times per year, I've never been stopped on the street by any authorities and asked to produce my passport. Although I always carry a photocopy of my passport photo page and have pictures of it, my visa and entry stamp on my phone.

Thai Law, and most countries, require you to carry your passport at all times, but you are only expected to hand over a copy.
Carrying around a color copy of your passport is not compliant to the law but it does help. Though it depends on the mood of the cop. If you do carry a copy, most Thai cops (those not in a pissy mood) will look at your copy and then escort you back to your hotel so they can see your real passport. However, if you're unlucky enough to get a grumpy or strict cop, carrying just a copy could mean extra trouble/hassle (maybe a fine).
* what also helps is for you to ask your hotel to print you a copy the page with your visa stamp/entry date in addition to your front page.
Absolute BS! Going through heavy security to enter the Royal Palace last month, my black and white copy was excepted. My driving licence is good enough for the Police in traffic stops, as the car is registered in my name.

If you're out and about and stopped for a traffic check, no Thai Policeman would 'escort' you back to your hotel, I was stopped several times, routine traffic stops, remember they cant see you through anodized windows to see if your Thai or not, and all they did was ask to see my driving licence, grumpy strict cops? never had a problem with Thai Police. I was quoting the Law, not the common practice.

I wouldn't have any intention to break Thai laws, but nevertheless, I would not go there, or anywhere else where they still have the death penalty, even for offences that are neither lethal, nor do they have caused severe and permanent injury. I don't like DRACONIAN LAWS, I prefer countries with HUMANE legislation. For me LENIENCY is a definite sign of trully civilised societies.

I been in Thailand many times , but the first time I have to deal with Thai police and prison politics as my partner got arrested at the airport , I went to visit him in the tourist prison, and there I meet a lots of tourist arrested for the more stupid reasons, this is serious, some of them were not allowed to call the embassies and they were stuck there for years, no one knew where they were. Some for smoking canabis, some for overstaying their tourist visa, some for urinating near a poster of the King, some were reported of false allegations by their Thai partners to keep their belongings.
I wish we had all those rules for immigrants here in germany

If caught with a joint or a small amount, pay the bribe quickly. Do everything you can to keep a low profile. The more attention you attract, the bigger the bribe required and it could get to the point where a bribe will not work. Talking to your embassy is the last resort, and if you do, be prepared to be on the news

he needs to be more specific and realistic about "laws" drugs?? many people in thailand smoke weed and you dont get locked up by doing that but you can get locked up if you sell it. so as long as you are a buyer and smoke inside a house its okay. even if you get caught smoking weed you only get locked up for less than 50 days you will never get a death penalty on smoking a joint or blunt of weed.
They have no sense of humor at all when it comes to drugs. In Thai court, your respectability is also on trial. Lawyers have to defend your reputation as much as defend against the charges. When you appear in court on any drug related charge, the lawyer can't do much to improve your reputation in the eyes of the court. If you are caught in physical possession of drugs, you are screwed, and they give stiff sentences even for a joint of weed. If you want to get high on vacation, SE Asia is really not the place to go for that. Go to Amsterdam, perhaps? Drugs are a bad idea when in your own country, but they can be a very tough lesson when you are in a foreign country. I see that Las Vegas has legal weed now, and they have cheap flights within the US.

A buddy of mine got set up by a police officer in Bangkok to purchase weed and was immediately arrested. He was able to buy his freedom back for about $1000 without having to see the inside of a prison cell. Of course, if you get busted when there isn't a scheme to extract your money in place, it's a whole other story.

The items is meant for people traveling in to Thailand keeping them there. This is a trap that is very easy to fall into for all who doesn't know this law. In Wisconsin(The Dairy State) it is illegal to serve fake butter in prisons. It is also illegal to serve Margarine in a restaurant unless specifically requested by the customer. Also, cows and other live stock ALWAYS have the right of way on a public road. We take our dairy seriously here.

Hi, lm 70 and not so flexible as l was.. last year on a very windy day in a market in Thailand I dropped a 100 bht note, reflex made me try to pin it with my foot.. l missed and a lady store keeper picked it up for me and by finger wagging and head shaking she explained...a lesson learned.. l stayed for 3 months, wonderful country and people.
Some guy burnt a note which had the King's head on it in a bar showing off, he didn't get fined but could have. In the U.K. it is illegal to deface a coin of the realm , so most of this speculation is not all what it seem's, The Royal Family are revered here and just don't do anything that would seem to be viewed to be disrespectful as you could find yourself in trouble. He pleaded ignorance of the law and apologised and the Police let him off with a caution, so not as portrayed but sometimes when they try to be helpful it is misunderstood.
If you're going to take drugs in Thailand, after purchase, take them directly to your Hotel room & use them in 1, yes I repeat 1 sitting. If you can't take it or smoke it all, flush the rest & purchase more later.
