You mentioned "super steels" I remember back in the day,lol, at least 70% of all woods/hunting knives were mainly 420 high carbon stainless steel and no one had an issue with it. Buck still uses it to make knives. I have to chalk all the steel nonsense up to plan ole snobery.

You don't realize half of the hype this is... In MY tests, 420J from Taiwan is actually better than amost any steel, because when chopping, instead of hanging on to the edge and curling it hit after hit, the edge rounds off and gets tougher with use... And 420, for that same reason, is way easier to sharpen, because it doesn't hold on to that apex, so it can't curl it from chopping impacts. Maybe for push cutting it's another matter, but who does gentle push cuts when pressed for time and effort? 420 is very much like Carbon Steel for ease of sharpening, except it doesn't rust...

I like them because they are good in a wind.
if you plan to keep and use this full tang version, I would take it to the belt sander, and take the sharp edges off of that hook on the butt of the scales. it would work for retention just as well rounded off, look at the BK series, it has a similar tail, but rounded, and works great but is very comfortable to work with for longer periods. specifically the BK 7 and 9, I have done a fair amount of chopping with both with no hot spots there.
That seem to be a nice knife and a credit to the designer of the knife.

I am so glad you touched on the thing about the steel experts on the internet. You told it like it is so proud of that. And don't let anybody pick on you about your hat. If you will remember Charles Bronson wore a hat just like that in many a movie. Plus in the movie The Sting Robert Redford wear a hat like that. You're in good company.

D2 appeared during wwII. Buck uses a 420 (and slight variants). I have knives made of this stuff that I've owned for 35 years. Never a problem. Life is hard for steel snobs though. But! I’ll say this. One of my favorite knives is made of 420hc. Never go anywhere without it.
@@Surago It's okay, my friend. I am a recovering steel snob. I just received my chip for being 1 year free of judging a knife by it's metallurgy. But yeah, used within the stated limits of the manufacturer, you really can't go wing with most knives.

The old balance test - 1st try Dead Solid Perfect! I think Micarta makes better handle material then G10. I don't like chopping with a knife (batoning is OK), but trying to clear a path through vines/rose thorns with a 4 inch blade is maddening. This is a great all around True Survival Knife. The AUS8 would be easier to field sharpen, and you are right about steel in knives. If I don't know what it is, it wouldn't make any difference. The only exception is 420j2. It will not hold an edge very long. I enjoy your videos more and more every year Brian. Thanks for taking the time to make them.
I like that general blade shape. It reminds me of the Nowell Bowie I used all through the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s as a camping knife. The same shape and size. It took some serious abuse, especially in my teens and got used for everything from carving meat to preparing fire wood and a lot of ‘scientific’ B.O.A.R.D testing!

The Kizlyar Bastardo in Sleipner is another good chopper / survival knife. 6mm Sleipner steel is extremely strong, and holds an edge like D2, but tougher. I have a lot of knives from Kizlyar Supreme, and they have all been fantastic.
Which one would you reccomend? I am choosing exactly between bastardo in sleipner steel and this one in D2 steel. I will use it mainly for chopping and batoning. This one here looks a little more versatile but i like bastardo design more
I have just recently seen the new Rambo movie and I think that he agrees with you on the full tang version. I didn't see the first hollow handle knife until the previews of the other movies after that one. He was making some nice looking blades. Great review. I like that knife!

The point on the but cap is a glass breaker. The handle scales are held on with torx not Allen screws. The molly strips mean it's molly compatible.

I liked the hollow version of this knife :-) and like the full tang a little more :) that lanyard on the pouch would be great bowstring, any bearing points on the sheath? Oh and great video Brian.

It’s a nice knife and probably as tough as they come however, for $180.00 I would rather invest in a US made knife. I don’t want to take anything away from the designers and craftsmen of this knife. Good thing I have a lower knife budget and happy to use less expensive knives.

It's not that the older steels are garbage, it's just there are alot more better steels available. People have options now. Prices for "garbage" steel knifes are just as expensive as some of the super steels nowadays, so personally I'd rather purchase a knife made of the newer compressed powdered metals than the older stainless or carbon metals.

this is a great knife - big - sharp enough ( can always be sharpened more ) and strong - i would trust this knife with my life - that extra bevel on the spine can be sharpened into a extra blade - those Russians make a mean blade - great review
True about steels, I think Ray Ennis at Entrek knives doesn’t get as much credit because he uses 440c. Never heard a bad thing about his knives and I have an 11 Bravo and it’s awesome.
I have one of those hats. I like it too.
I'll stick with my BK-7. I planned on adding g10 scales, but still have the stock ones, and they are good. If you sharpen the second edge (top) it makes it a double edge knife, illegal in many states. (dumb law!!)
Take a dremmel or file and sandpaper to that birds beak handle and round it off a little bit and you'll have a decent survival class knife. It's obviously not going to be for everyone, but if you like big heavy knives, I see nothing wrong with it. I AM a big knife fan, but that one isn't really my style, however if I had to use it, I'm sure it would work just fine. The only real drawback I see to it is the price. It seems a bit steep to me for what it is, but to each his own on that. Value is in the eye of the beholder.
Hollow handle knives are fine if they are one piece.I do like that knife. False edge would be sharpened.

Tool Steel and semi Stainless are much Tougher for Wilderness use , try repairing chips on survival knives if they are super steel made , A 2 is as tough if not tougher than 3 V and when D2 is done right it is best of both world at very affordable price

A2 is not as tough as 3V and D2 is weaker than most stainless steels (that's why people complain it chips). I agree with the general idea though. The most underated steel is the ballbearing steel. Way better quality than A2, almost as tough as 3V, sharpens easier than all these, however it holds it's edge way longer than any of these!!! IT's carbides, also cut, way better than any of the steels mentioned here. It's edge stability is the same as 3V, if not better. Literally, the most underated steel for fixed blades..

Idk a thing about steel...but holding a knife I can relatively tell if the blade is going to be alright or just trash. My biggest thing is edge retention.

Oh btw, I just learned (JFYI) two things that will make you🤔: 1) Astronauts who spend a long time in space-their "Circadian Rhythm" changes from 24hrs. to 24.9hrs. long-oddly enough that is how long that it takes "Mars to make 1 complete revolution", and 2) That our bodies make two kinds of Cholesterol HDL/LDL(one bad, one good)-it's found that in temperature 67°F or below-the body makes the good one, above that temp., it makes the bad one. The odd thing is they believe that the median temp. (in summer on Mars when it had an atmosphere) would've been about 67°F!🤔 Thanks for your vids - and I'm happy about your new bow-drill success-DUDE, you're on FIRE!!🤣 Hope all's well with everyone/thing and that your "🎄" was good and you'll have a safe and "Happy New Year 🎉"! The steel complaints would come from the advancement in steel it's the same as using a windup camera or an old car or plane or gun newer is almost always better in performance

In comparison dependent on the use if I use my s30v and then use 8cr13mov the amount of use btwn sharpening is night and day but 8cr compared to 1095 is closer for one use but going to toughness it's a big difference it depends on the situation and the specific use per comparison

'Still stuck in the metric system'? You do realize there's only 3 countries in the world that still use imperial right? Being the USA, Myanmar and Liberia. So who's crazy? The rest of the world or these 3 countries?
The testing was solid and honest but about the knife. That jimping makes no sense, that bone crushing part makes no sense, the swedge on the tip makes no sense and that pointy part of the handle makes no sense. So basically the knife itself makes no sense regardless of the steel.
I never said anybody was crazy. But, YOU do realize there is only one country in the world with footprints next to their flag on the moon, right?
@@SurvivalOnPurpose Yes. And NASA uses metric since about 1990. They actually lost the 125 million Mars Orbiter because Lockhead Martin (one of the contractors) still used imperial. There has been other accidents because of the mix up. The UK (inventor of the imperial system) officially changed to metric in 1965. They realized that the world would not convert their measurements to the actual size of a foot of one of their long dead Royal family members long time ago.
The US military ground forces adopted metric in 1918 using 'klicks' as slang for kilometers.
Kizlyar, being a Russia made knife, probably gave dimensions in metric.
You are smart enough to both mention metric and imperial to reach a bigger audience. It would be smart for American knife companies to do the same.
So again, I like your knife reviews and you do a good job at it. That I don't like this particular knife, for the reasons mentioned, is besides the point. I'm sure there's people out there that do like the knife.

@@jonnyboat2 Depends on how you look at it. The British imperial system was there since 1588 and revised in 1825. The metric system began in 1799 but is made more accurate over time with the meter measured in distance traveled by the speed of light in 1960. So the international metric system in use today is actually newer. And is makes much more sense so even countries that used imperial transitioned to metric, including Canada, Australia, India and even the UK. In 1975 the US had the metric conversion act because they did realize it would be way better for international trade but they changed the 10 year death-line into no death-line and only voluntary.
