Something I tried also is painting a plastic or paper bag black/white then pressing that against the canvas, either with a palm or scribble with the back of a pencil. I can get lots of interesting marks combined with doing all the great techniques I’ve learned from Julie here.
Thank you so much for this demonstration!!! Very helpful as I try to refine what I like and what I don't like, as I develop my own style of abstract painting.
You are correct in the fact that everyone has a right to like what the like. And also to have an opinion about what they like and don't like. Not everyone like my work. And when they don't I want to hear the different opinions. So... I also voice my opinions. And with that being said Its not this one particular artist. I just think abstract art isn't art. It's scribble.
I feel very sorry for you. You are missing so much, not just in art, including your own work - if you do both, as I do, each builds into and helps the other - but also in life. We are surrounded by abstract images if only you can allow yourself to see it.
@@julieschumer7182 Much appreciated Julie. My artist friend, Dana Dion also recommended the Liquitex. The art store here in Sydney sold me an Australian brand of matt fluid “Derivan Matisse”.. apparently it’s more matte than the Liquitex. Thanks again for your response 😊
@@Trusid I love Dana Dion's work! If you have tried those Matisse paints, let me know how you like them. There is a kind called Structure which is supposed to be extra thick like oil paint.
That’s the whole point of no representational art. It’s not “about” anything but itself. Its pure art in the way instrumental music is. You don’t expect Mozart or Led Zeppelin to imitate natural sounds, you expect them to create something new, that has never existed before, so why expect painters or sculptors to just recreate what already exists?
Well as a response to you. Yes you are correct in the fact that one cannot compare these two different styles. As one is art and the other simply isn't. And I'm positive if you were to read my credentials I'm sure you would find out I'm not ignorant. If you tend to like and want to blow hard earned money on splatter paint then help yourself. I like the fine arts personally
Your lack of fondness for something is not evidence of its (supposed) lack of quality. Just because you don’t like abstract art, does not mean it “isn’t art.” People have the right to like what they like. I find merit it all art forms, not just one. If you like fine art, stick to that but minimizing and berating another’s work is childish and says more about you than it does about them.
@@julieschumerart24 that's not what I was saying exactly but more like where have you been in my experience?🤗 I love the method that you use in this and really enjoyed the video a lot! 💜✨👍
Like I said before. It's business, not personal. I'm no Turner either. But at least I'm not on here teaching scribble and calling it an art lesson to adults
Well I've been painting hyper realism for 25 years. And as far as Pollock goes, he wasn't good, he just happened to run across a desperate and rich group of people who were willing to pay what he asked. It's more about their lack of common sense than his ability to paint.
I would not buy a hyperrealist artwork… but I would have a Pollock on my wall any day!! You forget that originality is heralded over repeating what is already in the World… Pollock may not be understood by everyone, but everyone does appreciate originality. Narrow thinking gets to be very boring.

Lol I'm not miserable at all. I would just feel better waking up and seeing a lesson of at least some talent like shoe tying or hair brushing, because this isn't art
Feel free to look elsewhere if you are not finding what you’re looking for here. RUclips has an endless source of art-related videos and information. Remember, not all art has to be some brilliant showcase of technique. Some paintings are intended to be simple and uncomplicated. That okay.
Well I look at it this way. If a 6 year old child can paint your work then it's not fine art. I don't many children painting a Turner, Rembrandt, .......
First of all, Turner and Rembrandt were representational artists, not abstract artists. Representational art cannot be compared to abstract art, as they are two entirely different categories created with entirely different processes. There are also different kinds of abstract art, as well. A six year old child cannot paint intuitively and if you’re so ignorant to compare an experienced artist’s technique(s) to the “work” of a 6 year old, then perhaps you have a lot to learn about the subject of art and it’s “diversity”.
Vermeer was a representational artist. Representational art cannot be compared to abstract art. They are two completely different categories, created from different places, using different processes. Anyone with a basic understanding of art and its “diversity” would know this this.
@@julieschumer7182 maybe so, but most l artists wouldn't. I wasn't trying to be offensive, but never got how a painting that looks like a 2 yr old painted it and then omg at the titles they come up with. Lmao
Art is a very broad subject. Just because you don’t understand it does not mean that it “isn’t art”. There are plenty of artists that do various forms of art, including abstract. I used to do mostly sketching and scenery but now I do mainly abstract, as it is an entirely different creation process. There is great freedom and a lot to appreciate about the process of abstract painting, which one would not understand if they’ve never done it. Just because something looks simple, doesn’t mean it is.
I love this, makes instantly inspirational to paint all day

Julie, is that “matte medium” a gel or fluid? Thank you so much 🙏🏼
It's a fluid. Both Golden and Liquitex have it in that form.

When you’re creating something like this, where do you put your focal point?
I don't necessarily have a place in mind when I start. It sort of evolves and then the painting tells me where the best place is to put emphasis.
Pollock never had a focal point... Cheers
Look no human on earth can honestly look at his work and tell me what it is he painted

These are OIL pasteles with ACRYLIC medium ? you mention the "water soluble crayon" at one point but at the start... ?
It wasn't an oil pastel as I remember.
Nesse tipo de trabalho, qual o objetivo de riscar (fazer essas marcações) na superfície (tela) com carvão ou óleo pastel? Obrigado
It's to add interest to the painting and depth if you layer over it and then make more marks.
Hi. Is that charcoal?
It's a graphite crayon made by Lyra. This one was a water soluble 9 B. It's a great tool, I encourage you to try it.

I beg to differ. I know a lot of 6 year olds that can scribble and smear paint on canvas

Did you know that the Vermeer exhibition in Amsterdam last year sold 450,000 tickets in two days. Vermeer was a real artist . This is mendacity.
And Kandinsky? Rothko? Pollock? Where do they stand in your opinion?
Oui mais ici ce n'est pas le même art, on est là dans l'expressivité, le défoulement. L'art est multiformes, il n'y a pas de concurrence entre elles.
Why?? Art is a living process, it's about the journey, not the result.
