Maybe I got it wrong, why do you think I had coolant erupting from the radiator?
Get the fan working and get a cap on it it will be fine. Then get a vacuum gauge on that carb and you'll be Aces. Bro its alot to keep up with on first start. At least your not having to break in a flat tappet at the same time. Dial that carb in with a vacuum gauge only after its fully warmed up 👍
Great! Yes, dialing the Carb is coming. :)
Probably just purging air out is all.
We fall so we learn how to get up. Hose down the coolant so it doesn’t ruin your paint. You may have to put your car in a slight incline to burp it out if she gives you a hard time. I’d use a laser thermometer to see the actual temp of the engine.
Looking forward for more content
Probably still just purging out air in the system either that or you have a reverse flow (wrong rotation direction) water pump! Also head gaskets on small block Fords can easily be installed incorrectly if somebody is inexperienced usually only one of the gaskets will have the blue printed side facing up so when you put them on the correct way we'll have one side blue and the other side black but if you put them both blue side up you'll have issues! the cooling ports on the gasket should go towards the rear of the engine try purging out more are would it run for a while if you have overheating issues then that's your problem or like I said wrong rotation water pump! Bleed the system of air, turn on the heat so you can open up the valve on that new heater core and get that filled with coolant also!
I feel your pain/apprehension firing a 427 tomorrow with new EVERYTHING and I expect issues!! Drive on.
Good luck, hopefully your day goes better than mine did. 😁
@@AndyKruseChannel Thanks .Overall it did. Had a major P/S leak on the Borguson box hose that was self inflicted, but purring like a kitten now.
Good stuff. I was also nervous on the first crank! Keep the videos coming. I watch all of them and have been making similar modifications to my fastback. I also appreciate the humble approach in not editing out mistakes. Very genuine approach to doing all these things ourselves!
Thanks 👍
Nice. Really excited for you to see it running! Next step, on the road!
You and me both!
Congratulations, Andy. The engine sounds great! I'm happy for you and anxious to see your first drive in it.
You and me both!
Very happy for you I've been waiting for this video. Great job 👏 👍
Yay! Thank you!
So awesome to see this fire up Andy! Way to go!
Thanks a bunch!
Congrats on the Engine install and fire up! Love the Content I watch every video.
Awesome! Thank you!
So cool that it fired right off. I did something similar with the coolant on my car, what a mess!😂
I think I’m single handily keeping the paper towels companies in business. 😆
Me too James. I used one of those bleeder setups last fall. Mine vibrated out of the radiator filler and fell into a running 18" flex fan! Talk about a mess. Now I duct tape it to the radiator support when bleeding, lol
Andy if u ever run out of things to do with yours, fly out here to the Chicagoland area. I’ve got plenty that needs to be done with my 65 convertible. You’ll have plenty of content. Keep up the good work brother. I really enjoy watching & learning from your videos.
👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Haha, don't tempt me!
Man it's like I was right there in your garage with you. Great stuff and excited for you. If all that happened was fans not cutting on and some clean I'd say you did great! Congrats. I'm restoring a Mustang and at the engine build phase. Barely about to put on the timing cover and water pump. Can't wait till I'm where you are at!
I appreciate that!
You'll be ready to fire it up before you know it! :)
Congratulations Andy on Your Video I have been waiting to hear Your 347 Run and it Sounds Great Nice Work Keep the Mods Going on Your Channel 👌👍👍
Thanks 👍
That's why you use the expansion tank to burp the cooling system and you should consider adding one if you don't have one.... NICE CAR - hope you have fun with the 347!
Thanks!
Nobody knows how it feels to complete a project, except the guy that did the work. I just completed replacing 9 wiring harnesses in my 68 Mustang. In short, I get it Andy. Great job dude.
Haha, thanks! It's all part of the hobby, and it usually makes us better for the effort. :)
That’s amazing man !!!! Congrats
Thanks!!
Exciting step, I’m jealous! Don’t be discouraged by things like this, they just make for better stories later!
Not discouraged, if anything it makes for more content. :)
Engine sounds great! Good job Andy!
Thanks!
Great Job Andy
Thanks 👍
Good stuff and congrats on the new engine! Im putting my 68 back together that Ive had since 99. It broke down in 2010 and the original 289 is out and I have a roller 302 in it now. A couple of mechanics worked on it but its never been fired up so Im getting to that point. I recently took off the intake because I noticed it didnt have rtv on the front or back end and used a tip i saw on one of your videos to put the intake back on (cut off studs). Getting nervous as Im getting closer, but Ive been trying to document it all on youtube as well. So anyway, I really enjoy your content!
Awesome, sounds like you’re really close. 😀
Nothing like that first start up
Congratulations on the new engine
Time to enjoy it
That's the plan! :)
Hi Andy, Congratulations on the install. Hopefully your builder did a thorough cam and lifter break-in. A fresh engine like yours is going to generate a lot of heat as the new components bed-in. That electric fan probably failed early in the run, hence the high temp in the cooling system.. Don't be too critical of yourself. Messy yes, but it will rinse off. Glad to see you went with a Holley carb. Easy to tune and reliable. Also glad you went with a braided carb feed hose. Those blingy chrome solid tube style are prone to cracking, resulting in underhood fires. I didn't catch whether you went solid lifters or hydraulic. Enjoy!
Thanks! Yes, builder did all that break in stuff, he said just fire it up and go!
Hydraulic lifters . 😁
Love the vids keep ‘em coming
Thanks, will do.
Andy, I just did an efi to carb conversion along with multiple upgrades like, fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel lines, water pump, distributor, battery, etc.
I just started it up after about 2 months of working on it and I was having those nervous bubble guts just like you.
Glad to report it all worked out minus what happened to you. The engine over heated and the reservoir started shooting out hot boiling coolant. 😂
That's the best part, all that work and paying attention to detail paid off for you, that's how it's supposed to be. Nice! :)
Good job keep up the good work love the videos keep em coming
Thanks! Will do!
@Andy Kruse just started my 67 the back in August 289 bored. 30 over flat tappet cam edlebrock top end kit was super nervous to start knowing I had to immediately start braking in the the cam
Had the same feeling when I started my 5.0 Congrats
Thanks! She'll run again!
Well Andy, since we're related
.....well done. I too have done the engine bay drench in my earlier years. IT GETS INTO EVERY INACCESSABLE spot it can. Thermostat opens when engine warms up/fountains happen.
It happens to the best of us.
Nice car Andy, I just purchased 65 model coupe, Wimbledon white 347 stroker 448horsepower and I just love it.
Very nice!
OYAA MAN THAT'S THE TICKET 🎟 🙌🚗🐎🔧🇺🇸💪🙏 keep a eye on that oil pressure
Pressure hovers just over 50psi, much better than my last motor. :)
Another sunny day here in the PNW..I know we don't get many....Hit the road!
I wish I could hit the road, but there's still snow on the road in my neighborhood. :)
Burping the system can be a challenge, but if you use a remote starter, you can be outside the car and monitor engine speed that much easier and view what's going on. As for the fan, I always install a full control toggle so I can turn the fan on without worrying about the thermostatic switch taking over.
Yeah, I’ve been debating about that toggle switch, I might have to do something like that. 😁
Great post, thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Congrats, Andy! I feel your nervousness, I'm starting my 351w this weekend as well. 😬 Yours sounds healthy!
Good luck on your new motor, I hope it goes better than mine did. :)
Nice man. Congratulations.
Thanks!
Great job. Great accomplishment.
Thank you!
Nice to hear the rumble. I just got my mustang II suspension welded in.
Thanks!
Doing the front suspension like a Mustang II or something in a similar style would be great, but dang that stuff is expensive. :)
Very impressive !!
Thank you! Cheers!
Well done
Thanks!!
Congratulations Andy! So the white pony threw up on you. It happens to the best of them. You did a wonderful job and I hope you always enjoy it! 🏆🏁
Thanks so much! Yeah, it could have been worse. 😆
Good stuff bro
Thanks!!
Awesome bro
Thanks 🤗
Engine sounded great! Don’t feel bad about a bit of coolant, when I rebuilt my engine on my other car I blew the intake off no fewer than 4 times, it happens!
Coolant everywhere is not usually an issue because you can hose it off. It's been around freezing here the last few weeks, hosing the car down is not an option. :)
I'm with you on the overthinking issue. I'm working on my second engine swap now. Looks like you're in Washington state. If you have some parts from the old 289 you need to get rid of, let me know! I'm putting together a 302 for my '67. Can't wait to see a test drive with that stroker!
I over think a lot on this car, it has caused some of the problems I've experienced so far. :)
I had bad experiences with electric fan past on my '66 Mustang. So I changed it to clutch fan and its been working years now without overheating or any problems. Here in Finland summers are not so hot though... don't know how hot it is where you live Andy 😊
We'll spend most of the summer at 90 degrees or more. :)
Great job!
Thank you! Cheers!
Good looking Mustang
Thanks!
Congrats Andy! It’s always nerve wracking to fire a new engine. A little coolant on the floor is a small thing compared to the victory of having a new engine running.
Very true!
Awesome video as always, Andy! I wish I had HALF of your ability/know-how when it comes to working on these cars… I went to a car show this weekend with my son and saw an import version of your Monte Carlo bar - it makes so much sense. I’m getting ready to start my radiator swap project this weekend and am pretty nervous about flushing/refilling my system properly, but I think like you said, I need to stop overthinking it and just get in there and do it. Thanks to you, I’ve got the confidence and a lot more know-how to get it done. 😊
Awesome! Honestly that's where my idea came from, I have over two decades of import car history behind me, and this bar design was influenced by those cars I built.
I feel the same way when I watch other channels, it feels like they're light years ahead of me in skill and knowledge. But, you gotta start somewhere, and I learn best from my mistakes. :)
Here-we-go finally!
Maybe I rushed it?
I hope you are making a lot of money on your you tube channel! You’re doing great!
Ha, I appreciate that, but the money is not enough to carry this hobby. It’s a good thing a have a day job. 🙂
Slight hiccup, but overall a huge win! Congrats on the new motor Andy!
Thanks 👍
Motor sounds great! Hopefully you didn’t get any coolant in the carb 😅. Happens to the best of us lol. I had so many temp issues. One thing to note is bored out blocks will always run a few degrees hotter than stock nature of the beast.
No problems with coolant in the carb. Thanks for the heads up on the coolant temps. :)
I think you may have obsessed over the air in the coolant system. I knew when I saw that huge funnel in the beginning of your video that it was going to be a matter of seconds before a big mess. (Ask me how I know) My concern was antifreeze getting on your paint. I've learned to top off the system, slap the cap on and forget it. When firing up an engine for the first time you have too many other things going on at once to have time worrying about that. The system will purge itself of any trapped air and you can go back later after it cools down and add more coolant. You should be constantly monitoring your oil and temp gauges. Great video! If you don't already have a AFR gauge then do your research and get one. It has helped me dial in the jetting for my car(b) and DO read all the tuning instructions that came with the new Holley. They help emensly with fine tuning. You also should use a vacuum gauge when setting your idle. Manual transmision cars perform better with double pumpers. Automatics like vacume secondaries. Both work with either, but if I know you, you'll end up with a double pumper eventually.
Thanks for the heads up.
Mine did the same with the fuse, but at the track! I oversized the fuse and never again. I think the spikes/ inrush blow the fuses, so slow blow or over size avoids that. For my rad I fill it, then cap, run until thermostat temp, surpassed, let cool , then add. Then go for 5 min drive and repeat.
I agree that the initial surge can pop these fuses, especially if they're under sized for the load. I put a larger fuse in, haven't had a problem since. :)
Motor sounds great
Thanks!
We understand.... LoL I got too excited!
It happens to the best of us? :)
Keep it up not to scare you but had also a 347 stroker with 500 miles and blew the motor piston crack in cylinder 7 now currently went down to a 302
Not scared. If it blows up, that's an opportunity to upgrade. :)
Andy, good one as always, love your vids. Only thing I would have done differently is maybe back the car out of the bat cave first, rolled it, if necessary, before the initial start-up, better to lose a car and not a car and a house!! LOL. Seen some vids on YT where things went rather "Sideways" on first start-up!! Appreciate all your mods, I had a 70 Stang once, had to sell it before it killed me, too fast with a 351 Cleveland and 4 speed in a coupe. Basically, a Mach 1 drive train. Now have a few fords and comets, nice thing is that all the mechanical stuff from early Mustangs is interchangeable with my 64 Caliente, 64 Ranchero, and 64 Fairlane. My 67 Cyclone is another story but good interchanges with 67 Stangs and Fairlanes too. The good thing about most early Fords, you can "Franken-car" them if need be!! And it's alive it's alive, it is Alive!! Most of the time! LOL. Plus, so much now available from the big shops too, like Summit, Macs. Car Krafter etc. We like your fearlessness and it's an inspiration to hang it out there sometimes!! And see what happens, ...be it good bad and, hopefully, not ugly!! LOL ;D
Awesome, thank you for the support!!
@@AndyKruseChannel you are welcome, good luck in the future!
AWESOME JUST AWESOME
Thanks!
part of the reason we watch these videos is for the goofs - just so we all know we’re not alone out there - we’ve all done stooped stuff with all the best intentions - enjoy ur videos!
Yeah, I like watching that kind of stuff in other people's videos too. I used to put the outtakes and goofs in the end of my videos (way, way back) but it was the least watched part of any video, so I stopped doing it. :)
@@AndyKruseChannel your heater core segment gave me confidence to one day pull mine and renovate it - lots todo before then, but appreciate your content
Excellent video once again Andy. I will be sticking my engine this summer...hopefully ;-)... I'm going to try and stick it with my shorty headers on. Trans is in so its just mating it to engine. I think I will use just water at start up so if I get an eruption like you experienced it won't be antifreeze spraying all over my new paint. ;-) Thanks again!! BTW - where did you get that funnel?
Hopefully you won't have a coolant issue like I did. Before it erupted, there really wasn't anymore air bubbles burping up (that's why I use that funnel) and I could have put the cap on and I would not have had that problem. Good luck with your install! :)
I think we’re all happy for you! With that being a new motor aren’t you supposed to break the cam in for 20 + minutes varying the rpm’s? Cant wait to hear it when you get it dialed in. Congrats!
Thanks! Engine builders said cam break in is done, just fire it up and go!
That's for a flat tappet cam. With rollers you don't have to go through all of that.
Congratulations on the successful startup 👍👏. Couple of questions. Thermostat…180 degrees? What was the oil pressure as it ran, I could hear some “clacking” from the valve covers.
Yes, engine builder recommended 180 degrees. Yes, some clacking but he said it will smooth out once I get it running more.
Coolant system is designed to run with 12-18 lbs pressure. So you need a radiator cap at temp. What did the temp gauge say when it erupted? I presume your temp gauge reads from intake manifold near thermostat housing. As long as it wasn't above 220, probably no big deal. Make certain the fans are engaging though well before 220. If not, shut down at 200ish and work on fans/thermostat, etc. What is the temp fans are set to kick on at? Where is the fan thermostat mounted? Did you wire in a manual switch to the fans in addition to the electrical thermostat? Looks good and sounded smooth, frrom what we coold hear!
Did not see the temp before it erupted, I was focusing on 14 other things. The temp sensor for the fans is set to 185 degree on, 175 degree off. It works now, but it doesn't work when the fuse is no good.
Great video. Do you have other videos with step by step details of your build? I want to do mine.
Thanks!
I've got quite a few videos about just about everything on my Mustangs, but I did not build this engine, I had an actual engine shop do it. :)
@@AndyKruseChannel What did you tell them you wanted?
@@TexarkanaPrepper I sort of cover this in my earlier videos (where I discussed the details of the build), but I wanted a mean street motor that will have a gnarly idle but will still the motor will still be happy if I need to run to the grocery store. I'm not looking to set a track record and I don't want to have to rebuild the motor every year. I think I have a good balance of performance and ease of ownership. I'll know more once the weather cooperates and I can get the car on the road. 😀
This is exactly what happen to me when I got my 289 running after getting rebuilt. I did not have the fan connected so it overheated. Not to throw you crap, but glad I am not the only one that makes mistakes haha.
Yeah, that’s what I was thinking it was, over heated. 😁
Probably air pockets in the coolent system.
I was thinking that too, but it had been running for a while and the bubbly had essentially stopped. I'll just go with I'm an idiot. :)
Cool. We all have stories like that.
Yeah but most of them are not all over the internet for people to correct them. :)
Definitely
@@AndyKruseChannel Oh well. No big deal.
I'm getting ready for a 347 and going to use a champion radiator. Just wondering if I'm better off keeping my steel fan than going electric?
There are people that will argue the benefits of each, and there's pros and cons to each choice. One thing to keep in mind, you have a stock alternator, it may not be up to the task of powering the electric fan since you have other items also pulling juice while you are operating the car.
I am very happy with my setup, and I'd do it again if I had to. :)
Engine sounds awesome 👍
No idea with the coolant, but no real damage done I hope ?
The only real danger I found was almost running out of paper towels to clean it up. :)
Sounds great. You're definitely not excited at all 😁
Thanks! Can’t wait to get it on the road!
@Andy Kruse I bet! Tomorrow we are doing the first startup on the fastback we have been working on. It's exciting but always makes me nervous.
Video on RUclips, or it didn’t happen!! 😆
@@AndyKruseChannel oh its definitely getting filmed 👍
Coincidentally I'm doing this exact same engine swap right now. I have a '65 mustang with a 289. I have a 347 stroker on the run stand now getting it tweaked before putting it in. When I ran it for the first time the coolant went EVERYWHERE which I traced back to the moment the thermostat opened. My guess is that when it opened for the first time there is a sudden gushing of coolant hitting some very hot parts which in subsequent starts will already have coolant around them. While you are using a 180 degree thermostat, the heads are much hotter by the time new coolant reaches them. I believe that's what causes the sudden eruption. Am I wrong? I will be doing the exact same 289 to 347 stroker swap in the next few days and would love to avoid this very thing.
You're probably correct, and you probably won't have the same problem I did. :)
yup, exactly like old faithful geyser, hot stuff and cool liquid equals sudden eruption!
Dude, I love your vids. I'm building my 66 289 coupe right now. What size tires/rims would you suggest ?
Thanks!
I think 15" wheels look great on these cars, so 225/60 tires with 15x7 wheels and 3.75 inch backspacing is a great combo. I have 16 inch wheels right now and I'm not happy with the look. I either need to go back to 15 inch wheels, or step up to 18s and go full tilt with a racecar build. :)
Great Job!! Will the 8" rear end hold up to the 347?
Yes, as long as I don't do 5k clutch drops, it'll be fine. :)
Been there done that. Made a mess. Funny story though!
It's these kinds of accidents that make for the best stories. :)
Will you have Monte Carlo large bar back in stock again?
Not sure yet. Most of the parts are different than the "regular" bar, so it complicates the production. If I get enough interest I'll have to make more. :)
@@AndyKruseChannel Marketttting!! call it a Monte Cristo bar!! "And you can "Count" on it to fix any flexing problems"! :D Yeah, you can send my check later!! LOL ;D
Do you have to do a cam break in on a new engine?
Yes, but my builder already took care of that part.
@@AndyKruseChannel that’s great, excited to see you get it tuned up! Don’t worry about the video length. Maybe do the cut version as usual and then a more in-depth video for your true subs. I battle that all the time. I can’t seem to make a video under 10am. LOL!!
What radiator and fan are you using?
24" Champion Rad, Electric fan system from 1999 Ford Contour. I've got a video about it on my channel, check it out ! :)

too funny... I screamed coil wire... yup...
Great minds think alike? :)
Who built the motor?
My Engine builder. :)
Hi Andy watch some cool videos. What I have to say could make you or break you. I’m gonna go with the break you first you have so much power in that stock suspension car and Mustang’s are known for this if you jump on it in a turn and you will do 360s all day long another words you have no control. Now make a part install Panhard bar and torque arm system you will love your car for the rest of your life and you will never do 360s again'!!!!Little sidenote they work really well because you already have sub frame connectors drive heart
Thanks for the heads up, you need to watch a few more of my videos. :)
You're being too hard on yourself. People don't even know how to change their oil.
Thanks, I might give those people a call, they would probably not make the mistakes I make despite their lack of understanding about oil changes. 😁
