That’s an amazing price even for a rough paint job. I literally just got my mustang painted exactly the same colors. Car was in 3 shops and I had to take it out of each shop…promises made and never kept. I literally couldn’t seem to find anyone willing to touch it for less than $30k. Of course that wasn’t in my budget. Finally found a similar backyard painter who was amazing. He gapped it, lined everything up, tons of bodywork and a nice paint job. 15k, 4 shops, and 1 year later I finally got it back! I was losing hope completely for a long time. It’s all about finding the right person and that is extremely hard to do these days in the trades.

The person who painted did an incredible job and a lot of work for the price. Cost of paint varies widely depending on the quality, brand, etc. I paint on the side and for what he did I could not have done. I was thinking at least $7000 with budget friendly materials. I would never go too cheap on any classic car. The car is meant to last and hold value. Even $12,000 would have been cheap with quality materials. A lot of body shops around me don’t do repaints but rather focus on insurance work. Based on the way you discussed your approach on what you were looking for… you did incredibly well. Beautiful Fastback!!!!

honestly, if anyone says anything negative about the price for that, they have no clue what goes into doing it. and kudos to you for being a down to earth customer, cause 90% of people say they aren't expecting perfection but will when the job is done. it's a hard business to do as i've done it for the past 15yrs on my own in my own "backyard" shop. great video and walk through of what it takes to get your own vehicle painted by others.

I did 95% of the body work on my Fastback windows out, and took it to guy that had just put in a new spray booth friend of mine at work told me about Ed's Classics Hayward California. The car had been sitting for awhile after I was done with the prep, he told me it need to be sanded again, and sealed once more, so went down bought more paint and materials was about $400 for materials. Used PPG base and Five Start clear coat, was sealed in PPG Epoxy primer previous this. He painted it for $2500.00 but that was back in 2001. I've had quotes for another car I have that needed rockers, and some pretty extensive metal work otherwise, and then strip to metal on all exterior panels, guy quoted me 17k, after seeing his work, which was ok, but not quite to my standards, I stopped him after the cars metal work was done, and he had put epoxy primer on it, we settled on 10K for the repairs to that point. The rust repairs were pretty extensive, and even though I provided the new panels for the repair, it's a time consuming job at some levels. No rust, much easier job to do, but still every paint job is the result of good prep work. I spent almost 4 years off and on my Fastback working on the body, to be honest could have done a better job if I had completed all the work I did, but happy at the price point, and the paintwork can still be corrected at some point because you eventually get dings again !

Baeutiful car, and great video! I worked in a body shop in the early to mid 80's and we were getting between 1-2K for lacquer paint jobs back then. As you realize, the prep work is what makes a great paint job. I have owned a 72 Olds Cutlass convertible for 30 years. It was an solid, original southern car when I got with 85% original paint. It looked good and people tought the car was restored but there were imperfections that bothered me. I saw a car at a local show with great paint and spoke to owner who gave me the name of shop that did it and I went to talk to the guy. This was round 1996. I explained I would remove the bumpers and all trim and reinstall. I was quoted 6250. I was too cheap to pay that and painted it in my garage myself and got good results in 1997. The car still looks great but materials alone were over 600 at the time. I believe you got a fantastic paint job for a great price in short amount of time. I'm into Jeeps now and painted a 90's Wrangler in my driveway last year. Material cost are insane now. You can spend more than you paid for entire paint job on materials alone for one car, with some of the top brands. Enjoy!!!

I started watching this thinking man this guy is taking forever, but after watching I appreciate the presentation. As others have mentioned, just quality material can cost more than what you paid. As a person who does body work some but understands it completely (and I have a 65 Shelby recreation also as well and am headed to paint with my 55 Belair currently)..PPG paint (gallon) for the 55 was $800 bucks-that’s just the paint and not any products required to mix and spray, and that’s just one of the 2 colors the car will be finished in. I am at $5k in all related paints primers and floor and undercoat paint..you got a great deal in your paint job. Hopefully repairs were done correctly and don’t “show themselves”…those were serious issues around the flairs that probably warranted quarter panel replacement (and maybe you did).
I like the Shelby R type front valance and adding the tight fit rear bumper. You mentioned stripe perfection-worth noting for followers, real Shelby cars did not have straight stripes by design (can google for more info) and the GT350 rocker stripes should have oversprayed into the rocker areas.. I appreciate you not presenting your build as a recreation but rather a car that has everything youve loved about many different mustangs-this was your dream car and I get it. Great job. Really great looking car…I’ll be following.

First of all, your selection of colors was the right choice. I love the combination. My old man recently had his C10 painted and went through a similar process. Told the painter he wanted a good paint job, but the truck will live outside (I know, it's a crime, but his garage space is limited...his truck is his morning donut fetcher and grocery-getter). The guy did a great job, but the paint isn't concours level but it's good enough and looks great. I think he spent around $5k. I think you got a great deal...and best of all, if in 5 years you decide you want that crazy paint job, it's not like you're undoing a previous $15-30k paint job. Drive the car, enjoy it, and like you said...don't sweat it when there's a scratch here and there!
I'm picking up a 69 Mach 1 clone here in a few weeks and I'm struggling with the direction I want to go on the paint. The car is currently royal maroon, which is a pretty color, but I've always loved the Acapulco Blue, or even branching out to a more modern color like Sterling Gray Silver Metallic. I can't decide if I want to pay someone $10k+ to do a really nice job on the car, or if I want to invest in tools and attempt to do the entire job myself. I guess on the upside, if I try to do it myself and it doesn't turn out great, I will have paid the bill on some great lessons and have the tools to try again down the road.
Cheers - I love your videos, keep 'em coming! 🙂

    • @AndyKruseChannel
      @AndyKruseChannel  Месяц назад

Yeah, that's a big part of it, I didn't want to regret my color choice with an expensive paint job. If I do decide to switch it up down the road, I won't be erasing $15k worth of work. That's a good way to look at it.
If I had the space, I would have done it myself. Even if it cost me the same or more, I'd have the tools and some experience to show for it, which makes it worth it to me. :)

So I had to find another shop. We did the same....ask others that recently had painted their cars. What we found was a Maaco shop that had a separate dept that did collector cars. Their main work was doing police and trooper vehicles. They took it down to metal as over the years it had a few paints. Ot took 3 weeks and I found no flaws for a DRIVER pant job it that amount of time.

By the way, if I remember right, the Shelby stripes taper slightly towards the front. My 65 FB is the Wimbledon White/ Blue GT stripes with the spinner hubcaps...looks like the GT40 of the same year.

Wow, you 1,000% got a great deal! Bonus is that it still does look good and if he did it right, it will actually last a long time. My full time job is working on helicopters but I do custom paint on the side. You could easily have $3,500 just in filler, primer, sealer, color, clear, consumables like razors and tape and masking, and also overhead such as air compressor and tool use and electricity and such. You can even have someone wet sand the clear down and do a flow coat over the clear and cut, buff, and polish it and it will look show quality. Trust me, heck of a deal!

I'd described my paint job similarly. Unfortunately, I did not get that. I had orange peel on the deck lid along both rockers, to name a few spots. For me, it was a color change, scuff, and paint. It took the shop over nine months to complete the job, and I had to babysit. I also paid for additional things that did not turn out as expected, such as rolled fenders. Needless to say, after I got the car back from the shop, I took it back after it was reassembled. They did fix those issues I mentioned, but it was returned to me with a dented hood, WTH. They said they would fix it but I would have to take the car back to them in a couple of weeks. In total, I ended up paying about $8500, and they lost some of my parts. Yeah, it's not going back. Anyway, I think your car looks great. Keep up the good work.

For 3500.00, the shop didn't go to bare metal, did NOT use epoxy, 2 coats of paint not the standard 3, maybe 2-3 coats of clear (the low budget clear) and was not rubbed out. Very good job overall, for 25-30k the entire car has to come apart.

I do all my own metal, bodywork and paint but for that price and the amount of work, I would consider having someone else finish my projects. I don't do work for other people but if I did, I would consider that price good for me and the customer. 13 weeks when he said 8 is not bad at all. Some shops can drag out projects 10x longer than they say initially. It's not like an engine repair that is well defined. It is a dynamic process that could have infinite outcomes. One unforeseen thing could add hours or even days to the process.

    • @AndyKruseChannel

Agree to disagree about the timing being fair, the car sat there for most of that time without being touched. If he wasn't going to get started on it until 3 months after I dropped it off, I would have rather waited to drop it off until he was ready to work on it. But either way, the car is done and I'm 98% happy with it, so it's a win! :)

The Internet makes almost any car's paint look really good. You got a fair deal for a home garage budget paint. Very few car show spectators can tell the difference between a scuff and paint like your car, or a full bare metal perfectly gapped and worked high end paint. What most people don't understand is that quality materials easily cost more than what you paid for everything. Truth is that most enthusiasts are better off with even a good MAACO paint, or guy in his garage like you did. Most people want just good enough paint like you did so they can drive the wheels off their car and have no regrets about never winning a best paint award.

I think you made out well. I have the same “driver” mindset as you about my 66.
If it makes you feel better, I found a local guy to paint a new Shelby hood and fix a rust bubble on the lower front corner of each door, and said it’d be done that weekend. Fast forward 3 weeks, and he was about to spray the white, when we made a deal to add the blue stripes rather than taking it to a vinyl shop afterward. Month and a half of exchanging texts every week and him telling me he’s been painting but never done, I finally demanded a photo update, and he sent one that was not my car.
Drove over there and confronted him about it, and he hadn’t touched it since the day he said he was about to spray the white. At this point the car looked worse than when k dropped it off, and rather than just taking it from him then, he promised to get it done in a week and a half.
Long story longer, I dropped off my car May 9, and I still don’t have it back. For $2500

The greatest advertisement used to be word of mouth. Now, word of mouth only applies to friends of friends or some guy someone went to school with. I've painted for 40yrs. I understand exactly what you mean with not wanting paint that can't be scratched up.
Speaking of Maaco, you can get a show quality job from them. They are known for the quick cheap paint job but they can do a very nice job if you pay for it.
You get what you pay for. The older I get, the more detail I see and the longer a paint job takes. You'd be surprised at the 9 out of 10 people who say they don't want a show paint job expects it to look like a new car off the showroom floor. 25 years ago, the average cost to do a show job was 10-$15k.
People ask me today how much a paint job costs. Every person says they don't want a showroom paint job, but they don't expect a flipper job. Every vehicle is different, and the cost depends on time spent on it. Most of my jobs start at $3500. Materials have skyrocketed. A basic job that has 100 hrs spent on it is at least $5000 in labor. That's $50 an hr.
You got a deal at $3500. My Mustang is Wimbledon white also with red pin stripping. It's original paint but I'm debating spraying it.

I don't want to mislead someone, he didn't say 8 weeks to do the car and he would be working on it everyday for 8 weeks. In the end, while it took 13 weeks to get the car back, he spent basically the last 2 weeks doing all the work. He spent most of the rest of the time letting the car sit while he plugged away at insurance jobs, since they pay more per effort and time. In the end, I think the real reason why I got the car when I did was because it was ultimately in his way. :)

      @JohnBarr-ys9zl Месяц назад

Completely understand. It’s tough to gauge any level of work from appearance. A collision shop/trained tech will always lean toward production materials. There is a difference between the restoration world and collision when it comes to materials. Couple that with existing conditions, existing mils of paint. A lot of things to consider for longevity of any coating as previous coating can and may deteriorate at a faster rate and why most will not stand behind work unless it’s stripped.
In the end, it looks nice and the reason I clicked. The car looks fantastic.

I don't know how he did material and labor for that cheap. I just had my 1970 fastback Boss 302 tribute painted. There was no rust in the car and it only needed finish bodywork. I set the panel gaps and handed to the bodyshop in bare metal. Materials alone was over $7,000. Total was $30K. But the workmanship was top notch. They worked the dents out and didn't use filler. The car only had a skim coat in it. They did weld patches over my sail panel seams. The finish product came out great. I would love to have paid less, but I got what I paid for.

I didn't have the amount of work done that you did, and I wasn't as particular about the finer details, so that all helps with a better price. The car looks fantastic on RUclips, but it 'ok' in person. :)

Dang, wish I had someone around me that would do that nice of a job for that price. I plan on buying a compressor and gun and learning to do it myself. Looks great Andy!

Don't give up on the DIY project. If I had the space, I would have attempted it. Not everyone is cut out for this kind of project, but there's enough RUclips help out there and time is on your side, maybe you can give it a go. :)

    Andy.
I’ve been given 2 quotes to paint my coupe and it’s between 18k to 24 k AUD so I think you got a great deal.
    Cheers

Your car will probably come out nicer than mine, so maybe that price isn't that bad?

Well I look around and I almost cried when I was looking for someone to paint my wife's ford. It was so much. So I just did my research and went to work and painted it myself. And it's been turning heaf . People can't believe that I painted. And I done it right stripped to bair metal and came back.

Yeah, stripping the car down to metal would have been great as there's a few issues I'd like to deal with, but the budget just was there. :)

Andy, just a few things, you wanted a nice driver, not a trailer queen, the car looks amazing and I believe you were given a
fair price............. Last but not least, drive it and enjoy it !!
Remember, you can always spend $20K-$30k on paint.........................

Yeah, I'd rather spend the difference on go-fast parts instead of paint.
However, if I was building something for SEMA, that'd be a different story. :)

    Hey Andy again,
I mean the two holes one on the right and one on the left in the trunk floor next to the gas tank.
And I want to know if the hole goes into the fraim rail or if you can see the floor through it. And over the holes there are rubber plugs.
Thanks again I hope you understood it now.

I checked my trunk and there are several holes in several places near the gas tank. Sorry that I'm not much help on this one.
