An important thing is do not ignore darts when you are making a pattern. Measure how wide the dart is, double it, and add that width to the pattern. On another channel I saw someone make a pattern from a fitted skirt but they ignored the darts in the skirt and just traced around the edges, so the front and back of their home-made skirt was totally flat and had no shaping to fit a 3-D human body. If the fabric has no stretch, you need those darts to make a flat fabric conform to your body curves.

It looked like she moved the zipper to the back center seam, which would use a simple inseam zipper instead of a lapped fly front. She also skipped the back yoke which is more troubling because that is what adds the shaping to fit over a butt. I think if you skip the yoke, you would need to add back darts to compensate.

Now I know how to do that. I'm so excited to see the next part. I love all of your videos, I watched them all. Happy new year :)
If you have a hard time tracing the armhole with the tracing wheel, place the garment on top of a cork mat or some cardboard covered with patern paper according to the instructions. Then use pins to mark it. Do the same with the top of the sleeve. You will clearly see the markings on the patern paper without having to move any of the garment.
April, you are so amazing! I’m never gonna make my own clothing because I just can’t lol. But I looooove watching all your tutorials and living through your videos lol. 💕💕
Jennifer Xiong don’t say that, I always thought it would be too hard and watched all her videos just for fun, but in April last year I got a sewing machine and without any experience I started learning it and so far already made a skirt, some pants and lots of little stuff. It’s really not that hard, you should try!
I found this very valuable, thank you! Regarding the shorts, can you show how to create the pattern piece and construct the front area where a zipper and button would go?
You are great! I learn something new whenever I watch you. This is way off your normal topics. I have a paralyzed dog and I'm trying to construct a diaper keeper that actually works for him and to make it more durable. Was wondering if you might be able to offer advice or even make a video. I've bought some but they wear out quickly and I'm not having luck trying to make a pattern.
I would love it if you would make a video where you make a piece of clothing in different sizes (like size 2,6,14 for instance) of the same fabric and then show how /if patterns are different and if there are any differences or struggles how to compensate / overcome them. I'm more on the bigger side myself and most people who are sewing on youtube are on the smaller side. So that would be interesting for me! :)
I would really love to see a video on how to use a mannequin to draft patterns! :) Since I'm quite tall, my (adjustble) dressing form does not match with my measurements and draping is quite hard that way.
@@FannysLoA Yes I have, but I think you can't really pin fabric onto them? And I was mainly wondering whether there is a way to use a non-perfect mannequin to make clothes for yourself :)

I haven’t seen in a while since I got my sewing machine fixed but I’m think I’m ready for a fresh start on sewing cause I’ve gotta use my sewing machine and I need more clothes
My grandma would do this differently. She would take the original outfit that fit the person perfectly and then remove all the stitchings and used all the individual pieces to make her new sewing patterns to make all of her copycat outfits.
TheHeffinator Yep. Totally, it’s thin enough to pin through but no so thin that it tears (which was a problem I found with wrapping paper) I live in the UK and found a store that sells the 10m rolls for something like 80p (I guess about a dollar?). I’m such a Cheapskate LOL.
For triangle darts- measure the width of the top of the dart (the widest part) and double it. Add that much to the edge of the pattern piece that has the dart (usually waistline of pants or skirt, and side seam of the front of a blouse) If it is a diamond-shaped dart instead of a triangle shaped one , (diamond shaped darts sometimes used on a shirt or dress) then measure the widest part of the center of the diamond.
I don't even use paper. I simply lay the garment on the fabric, and cut. I use a half inch seam allowance. I recently made a coral long sleeve ribbed hoodie. It's the first thing, I have made from scratch in years. I looked up some tips for sewing stretch fabrics. Even though I have been sewing for years, I have still learned a lot from your videos. Thank you, for all that you do.

Thank you so so much for this video!! ❤️ I really appreciate all the extra little tips and tricks !
haven't watched it but this tutorial is so helpful! can't wait to use it
Finally something actually informative!!! Thank you SOOOOOO MUCHHH!!!!!!!😭🖤
Wish I’d seen this earlier, spent all day drafting disasters! Thanks for all the brilliant advice and easy to follow tips
I got a sewing machine for xmas a few years ago along with some ditsy print fabric for a skirt. Every year since I say I'm going to make it but never do, maybe this year will be that year. Also the tracing pattern idea seems far more easier than making my own like I attempted to do last summer and fell out with it 🙄
April- I just found your page and I’m LOVING ur helpful, amazing content!!
I know it’s been a while since you made this video, but I would REALLY be interested in what comes NEXT…
Once you make your mock up from your home made pieces but now it doesn’t quite fit right… please can you show us how to make the right adjustments so it will fit perfectly!!
That would be SOO helpful!!
Thank you so much! ❤ keep up the great content! 😍😃
Awesome tips, always great learning different ways to create a pattern. I love patternmaking ❤🤗
this is so helpful! is there a part 2 up yet?
Thanks for such an easy to follow tutorial. I have several books that tell me the same information but seeing how to do it was much more helpful.
wow. I just started sewing and this is so helpful. thann you so much
This video is super useful to me, please make this kind of video more😁😁 thank you🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
This was perfect. Thank you so much for explaining in detail and simple
I saw some of those videos because I want to do that, but yours is by far the best. Your explaination is great, you show exactily which seam is the right one and you show it on diffrent clothes.
You are so amazing. This really saves me from having to buy another pair of my favorite shorts just to rip them apart. Thank you so much!
This video was perfect for me since I was NOT in the mood to drape today ! 😊
I've been planning to copy some shorts for a while so this is so timely!
Where is Part #2 where you show how to make samples? I can't find it! Love this video!
I’m looking for part 2 too
When you find it let me know
I found this very valuable, thank you!
Thank for do this video, I a pair of stretch pants that’s comfy but now they are getting worn so I will try this, thanks
Girl you are KILLING IT!
I would really love to see a video on how to use a mannequin to draft patterns! :) Since I'm quite tall, my (adjustble) dressing form does not match with my measurements and draping is quite hard that way.
Have you seen the "make your own mannequin"-videos?
Basically cover yourself in duct tape, and you will have something that's a perfect match for you.
@@FannysLoA Yes I have, but I think you can't really pin fabric onto them? And I was mainly wondering whether there is a way to use a non-perfect mannequin to make clothes for yourself :)
@@lissegoris1276 Apparently you can if you fill it with the right material?
It may not be perfect, but at least better than the standard mannequins out there?
@@FannysLoA I have an old "adjustable" form. I don't recommend using them in their adjustability but I passed mine out with batting and covered it with a tight t-shirt, and reapplied the princess lines with very thin twill tape.
@@lissegoris1276 you can use the tape form as a mold and fill it with expanding foam and then remove the tape and it will be more accurate and you can pin fabric to it
I'm a newbie but you made it look super easy! thank you
Great video, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, your instructions are excellent.😊
Anyone else literally use baking paper 😂
TheHeffinator Yep. Totally, it’s thin enough to pin through but no so thin that it tears (which was a problem I found with wrapping paper)
I live in the UK and found a store that sells the 10m rolls for something like 80p (I guess about a dollar?).
I’m such a Cheapskate LOL.
Yes the parchment paper with the grid is good.
I use packing paper.
That works, i just googled how much the alphanumeric paper costs and i'm 💀
I purchased a roll of medical paper on amazon and it works great! Just like white pattern paper, you can see through it!
Really helpful .. I am seeing you in. 2022 thanks alot and keep it up 🤩🤩🤩
Finally you’re making a video like this 🥺💞 All of the other ones on youtube are so hard to understand lmao
That pink dress is beautiful
The pants was incredibly helpful✨✨✨💕❣️💓❣️💜
Thank you for sharing, i will definitely use this to copy some clothing, and hats.
Great..!!
Greetings,
Jeff
Very helpful! I do wonder how you would do this with a garment with darts?
Thanks for all your knowledge, I have learned alot.
Thank you for your tips. I know how to saw, but straggling over making some patterns.
I really like this video! I look forward to the next episode!
Love your videos! I am just learning to sew and you are so helpful...thank you.
wow you do not know how much you have helped me thanks a lot 👍🏾😘🙏🏾👏🏾🤗
Thank you so much for sharing!. It's so helpful for me to start having an idea of what sewing is like. It's a big help. Thank you so much!. 👌👍👏🙏💖💐
Yess! When I get the supplies I will be doing this. ☺😊
I been doing a few things wrong then lol This was helpful thankyou Coolirpa!
Excellent Idea for a video. Thanks for sharing.
I've been following you for years and I always enjoy your tutorials so much, I feel like I've learned so much. Thank you April!
Thanks for youre video tutorial i hope i am now able to copy some of my favorite dresses and tops that are wornout. ♥
