So much fun to play around with upcycled and non-traditional apparel fabric for practice, but an added bonus when you enjoy it enough to wear it! Have you ever used upholstery fabric to create a garment?
You are doing so well as a beginning sewer! Congratulations. You seem to take risks and think outside the box which will take you far in your sewing quests and endeavors. You have all the qualities necessary to become a great and creative seamstress. I would give you one suggestion and that is to make your own bias tape from self-fabric. The results are so much more professional. I rarely use store bought bias tape. At times, I have taken some of my husband's old neckties to make contrasting bias tape for various purposes inside the garment. These are great for Hong Kong finishes inside unlined jackets and dresses. They give the garment that little bit of pizzaz, even if hidden from public view.
Thank you for the kind words and the great suggestion! I will definitely have to try that. Currently working on a dress now that may be a good time to make and use my own bias tape on🪡🧵 So much to keep learning and trying out-but it is such a fun, creative process to push yourself on. Happy sewing! Thanks again! 😊
Love this! I am an avid thrifter/upcycler and most of my clothes are made from curtains and bedsheets, so your content really appealed to me and made me smile! Love your fringed self-drafted top. Very cute. Big 4 patterns are always a challenge to size right. I usually go by finished measurements in order to choose my size... You've definitely created some pieces to be proud of! Looking forward to seeing more!
Hi Faith! That is so awesome! It’s amazing what you can find at your local thrift store. I just went to my local Goodwill and found the most beautiful tablecloth-tons of large embroidery around all the edges-for three dollars 🫨. I cannot wait to make a boho, flowy style dress out of it. Thank you so much for your kind words and measurement tip! Happy, happy sewing to you. 🪡🧵🌷
Just a word of caution when using upholstery fabric is that when it is produced they use chemicals in making it more durable & or water proof, hence the longevity of the fabric which is not used in clothing fabrics. And in doing so that type of fabric should not be worn against the skin. I know a lot of them might say cotton but they don’t disclose the processing additives added to the cotton. Maureen
Found what I call a designer shower curtain at thrift store they are in coordinated fabrics I make a dress used 1 fabric for bodice and other fabric for skirt Now I say I have a designer dress
