Imagine doing this in the 16th century in a wooden ship, with no GPS, no radio and the closest rescue ship was months away and would of course have no way of even knowing if you needed help. You were basically dead or stranded in a remote unexplored part of the world for years if not your entire life if you had a problem. It's frightening but also fascinating to imagine those daring voyages.

When I read “Two Years Before the Mast”, Dana’s account of climbing out on the bow sprit of a tall ship to change sail while rounding the Horn made me realise where the limits of my courage might be

Funny, exactly the same book (an all-time favorite) came to mind when I saw this. And those guys were sailing a fully loaded vessel on their way back to Boston! I figure when the choice is to either get up a new sail or founder, you might surprise yourself....

riding down the face surfing the wave is unavoidable at times. this is the most dangerous part. if your bow catches sideways your boat can spin off course, leaving you broadside. notice how careful he is steering to avoid this. for hours on end, every time, it has to be perfect.
That's the reason he's showing you how to do it; NOT how NOT to do it and get his boat broadside.
it's a rhythm that everyone including the boat settles into.. Seemed quite manageable but.. at the same time, everyone is paying keen attention!
This yacht is ancient. Modern race boats aim to surf nearly all the time
@@rrrseajay This doesn't mean that "ancient" yachts are not sailing the seven seas in gale force winds and waves. In fact a great majority of yachts are displacement hulls not designed to surf at all.

This isn't bravery. Just people who know what theyre doing.
They don't have to be sailing Cape Horn.
They are thrill-seekers. That's all.
Some thrills are expensive. Like sailing.
They could all be hang-gliding. Or parachuting.
Or shooting heroin. Or filming pornography.
Thrill seekers like to "feel" alive.
Don't we all? I feel dead, but that's me.
Politicians are seeking the "thrill" of power.
Only an idiot would seek out such thrills.
Like I said...some thrills are expensive.
Cheap people have "expensive" needs.

In my youth I built a carvel planked, cutter rig sloop (ted brewer design) & circumnavigated single handed. A few years after I hung it up, the itch got so bad I did some delivery work. The itch has been acting up again lately, but time & age keep passing. Thank you for this video reminder of my mortality

Looks like the real thing! Wonderful how the boat holds together doing its thing! And the crew doing its thing in perfect symmetry.. ever watchful, ever sensing, sensing and sensing.. Always dealing with what happens before it happens.. Great reminders of how fully life can be lived!

I did it twice alone. First time with Wind of Change Russia March 2nd 1999^ Around Alone 98-99.
Second February 4th 2019 with Daughter of the Wind.
Both times self-built boats.

The HMS Beagel, carrying Darwn traversed the Horn and almost went down just before Christmas 1832.

Used to hit up Sherkston Beaches years ago before it all turned into beach front property.... on stormy days, that beach had some of the worst rip tides I've ever seen. Got caught in one while I was in an inner-tube and within minutes I was way the fuck out. Probably a bit more than a quarter mile out as there's an old wreck about that distance offshore and I was a bit past it.
Been there,done that with Clipper.Our skipper told us never look behind to wall of water and taught us to surf waves bearing bow away a touch as large wave approaches and surf down other side.Exhilarating as we did 25knots in 40knots of wind 😊

He was quite angry when we passed it 10 years ago with Zaandam.
Actually Cape Horn is just a small island.
So, we went back to Glacier Alley. Saw all the glaciers one more time.
Not so bad.
My dad traversed this area in merchant ships many times and talked about the wild conditions that were always a possibility.
His worst spot was the Southern Ocean that sometimes carried huge waves.

Shallow water makes for worse waves. That's why some of the worst waves are found in the ocean over seamounts that punch up pretty close to the surface.

hmmm, ..dont know..if I have a choice and you have 40 knot winds, I prefer upwind..I did a couple of races where the storm cam in behind us and we had to sail through night, surfing downwind, and it was not pleasant...

Looks like you've got her in perfect trim for a fairly open broad reach. I also prefer this point of sail to running outright before the wind. Less chance of broaching, and more comfortable approach angles on seas. Now, it's just stay on top of that helm--and HANG ON! Nice job.

Your last 3 words would explain why those huge waves hitting the side of the boat don't splash any water onto the sailors or the deck of the boat.

This used to be last major hurdle to Portuguese explorers before reaching India. Numerous ships sunk there, it used to be called Cape of Torments. When they finally managed it, it became Cape of Hope

There are a couple of films of rounding the Horn done in the 1920s - the last of the true windjammers - and they make this look like a quiet day at the pond.

Sailing from Ireland to Wales. Huge Atlantic rollers coming under the stern and the wind on the stern quarter on the crests yanking the stern round. I could barely hang onto the tiller to keep her straight and not gybe. Skipper puts up a cruising chute, a big bag of a foresail. I thought he'll have us over. But it pulled us along faster and more stable. That's sailing knowledge. When to go for it to be safer.
Mountains of moving water and that bloke is just cruising there, totally chillin😂

Imagine doing it in pitch black night
it's a judgement call, but if the boat has running backstays, might be worth setting one up on the port side in those conditions because the mast is probably get bit of fwd bend from those conditions, and while the sea state is not severe, the waves are kind of chunky and that adds quite a bit to the loading on the mast. If you have running backstays, those would be good conditions to set one up on the port side, in my view.
The crew seems so calm, cool, and collected! Not for me, as I'm prone to seasickness. Some of the worst weather on Earth!

Looks like storm conditions were prevailing there causing Cape Horn to be a bit wavy. It's not normally like that, correct? Many have passed Cape Horn with a nice Sunny calm weather conditions, correct?

Now this is very tough: rising wind whipping steep breaking waves and very confused seas threatening from the sides too… some of the breaks were capable of rolling over the cockpit, if not rolling the boat, yet, but you never know how strong the wind will get…
Read Alan Villiers book, The War With Cape Horn about tall ships and clippers trying to sail around the Horn. It was a rare time of good weather. Sails were ripped. Boats went missing. Crew were lost overboard.

In my 65 years on this planet I have had the privilege to experience seas like that a few times. I say "privilege" because for me it was BEYOND exhilarating. Also the fact that you realise that we are actually NOT as omnipotent as we would like to believe. Not at all.

Anyone helming a yacht in following seas should be standing up, in order to throw the wheel hard-over if the stern gets lifted and the yacht yaws around. Most likely the filming was done in calmer seas than they had had for some hours, as it's hard to film when things are really rough.
I think I am more afraid than wise. This video gives me the chills. I just couldn't make out any ropes attached to the sailors, and some without life vest either. I have to say, at my age, I don't like carnival rides or flying either. GL
