The motion: This house believes social media corrupts human interactions.
DR Jessica Carbino closes the case for the Opposition, as the sixth speaker of six in the debate.
Motion Carried
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
This was a very good argument that actually addressed the core topic: corruption and the nature of human interactions. I'd like to see her and Jack Symonds go toe-to-toe, she was great.
What this bitch doesn't know could fill an ocean. And you're just as dumb buying into it.
Thank you Oxford union for conducting this amazing debate 😍🙏
in many ways it does corrupt human interactions. Based on personal experiences i can tell you about the many times i've been out with friends and they have their phones constantly in their hands, looking at it every other minute.. Concerts - people are more interested in documenting the fact that they were present at the concert, than actually listening. The need to constantly be active on social networks and so on, is by my standards a corruption of human interactions.. However i'm not going to deny that i do the same thing..
The fact that they choose to "update" makes them lose the essence of "being present". Just as social media is affecting 1st world countries...its almost as bad if not 100% in the caribbean. Truly sad.
I think that the problem you mentioned is not specific to social media. It is rather phone addiction in genral.
Dr. Carbino made some very compelling arguments. Especially love how she pointed out how some people are always against technological advancement.
Her argument of "us being afraid of technological evolution" was absolutely irrelevant to the focus of the debate "Social media does not corrupt Human interactions".......It seems that people are more focused on the positives and negatives of social media, than they are on outlining and categorizing human interaction. Just because this speaker can't live without social media, doesn't mean it is good.......It surprises me that she is a doctor......
There’s a mile of difference between interacting solely on a desktop computer to a mobile phone or tablet. Convenience has infiltrated our psyches to the point of laziness overcoming us all. One can detach, physically, from a desktop, but not from a mobile or portable device with instantaneous connectivity. It’s how software engineers exploited experimental psychology to construct highly addictive apps, not the underlying technological advances. The devices aren’t the issue it’s the dubious ethics and absent morals of those designing the software.
In fact, that argument was the only new to the round, since all the argued afterwards felt like copy and paste of what speakers of the opposition argued before her.
@@jonloop8991 I agree. Exactly because of the irrelevance of this and most of the arguments of the opposition, I would find for the proposition, because they actually argued to the merits of the debate. The oppositions only real arguments were what positives do the social media bring - well that something is positive does not yet mean it does not corrupt the human interaction! Corruption is a bad change, and we must not think that social media has not changed interactions between humans to the worse.
The most adamant defendor of social media yet the most anxious speaker yet.
I thought she was well-prepared and reasonably articulate. I can't agree with her view, but having lived in a superficial Los Angeles, I think she did very well considering where she came from. Thank you for debating a consequential topic.
oh my God, I'm from LA and I know social media does corrupt human interactions. not all of us are dumb
@@carmen-xu7wn Carmen, I agree. (I didn't mean to be exceedingly generalising.)
She sounds like her voice is computer-generated.
molewizard hhhhhhhhhh 😂😂😂😂😂
Social Media, in its entirety, is a magnifying-glass platform, which can also be used for trade. 👼🏽💯
Social media itself expands consciousness, but the way it’s used is what makes it inherently toxic. Maybe prior to using social media, we should be educated to the positive impacts it could have in the aforementioned points mentioned in the debate as a means to overcome the negative ones?

I think the point of that argument was that we humans have a long history of apprehension toward the development of new technologies, particularly new methods of communicating. We have feared corruption from radio, TV, and even the written word. And although those technologies had real potential for damaging the Way Things are Now, as with social media, that wasn't necessarily a bad thing because of the positive influence they have also had. Human interaction will change as a result of social media, as it always has in response to new communication technologies, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The relevance of her argument to the topic is that you don't have to broadly define the complexities of change as "corruption."
In a debate, you have to prove that your side is the correct one. Whether you're in favor or not of your motion, you need to fight for it.
There are two sides of each coin One is position another one negative but that doesn't mean that you'll deny both perceptions which had been pointed out in this debate some people look at one side that's always create misconception
I hope you got my point.
What is Corruption, a negative effect of social media !
the point was that social media changes the way human interact but not corrups it. She said that radio and TV were inventions that also changed our lives but not in a negative way and people just unable to get used to utilize social media properly
Were supposed to trust a Tinder employee to give us an honest and unbiased view of the dangers of social media?....sure.
Social media without some ethic regulation does destroy human .
every human interaction without ethic regulation has the potential of destroying humans, don't you think?
This is me in every university event ! Panicked af !
can I just ask (off topic here) what's the dress code? Why are some of these women dressed like they're going to a prom? Just curious. The men seem to have a handle on dress code. Just asking, not trying to sound rude just curious if this is the norm.
Same thought 🤔
Well done, I felt her presentation. But this motion is not centered on the benefits and features of social media platforms.
The focal point is social media corrupts or does not corrupts human interaction.
Then I asked what's human interaction in this context?
It's basically seeking to address how we rely more on these platforms for seeking help or solving problems instead of one on one engagement with experts and experienced persons.
Moreover, how social media has overpowered the other forms of communication, like normal phone calls, face-to-face discussion etc.
That intimate relationship is dying out, The respect and tolerance for each other views on these platforms is becoming something else.
The misuses and peddling information falsely is another factor talking about human interaction or engagement
Is my attention span that short? 😭😭😭 when she sips the water suddenly I’m out of it and can’t listen, also her speech really sounded like a student googling a presentation for an assignment just to not fail her class. Maybe this argument would look better on paper or a book, but I couldn’t really listen to it in action
I think she is the most one i agree with,To be honest
I am just curious . The young judge gave a piece of paper to the speaker . What does it mean? Does he give him or her remind letter to stop ?
Is there anyone who can answer?
It is mind blowing ancient images ever captured in histody of space. Cluster of hundred of galaxies of early universe.
We are in age of new astronomy. It opened new window to our universe. It is just beginnin.
Thanks JWST and thanks for NASA, ESA and CSA.
Social media did expand rather than constrict social interaction
Watched all 6 videos still didn't knew who Won🤦♂️ ! Tell us the vote count in the last videos .
It's given in the description underneath the video. It says motion carried which means that the proposition won.
Why is she speaking at 1.5x
If she did really insta, snap and chat that her whole argument would have been over.
Her taking a sip of water after that statement disconnected her from the audience. It was all done for me
on 1:44 I turned it off
Dr Jess, how many times do you spend on SNS? What's worth it? You got nothing but just an online digital piece of transistors. SNS absorbs human's time and resources, leads to the TOTAL WASTE. Only commercial use of SNS worth it, like somebody advertise some products on SNS for example.
social media give voice to the voiceless; it makes our from customer become producer.
Notice how she calls common people "the public"
Lets have a debate on this on a live call. i need at least 6 sign ups.
social Media could.
Didn't know I could be so put off by a woman's voice. Was not expecting it.
Personally I found the relative lack of vocal fry in her speech refreshing.
"...media do..." #grammar

She did actually argue that most of dating people meet up through social media in the U.S. Wow, great argument. I would have loved to ask her, if she has an idea how many people break up in the U.S. or divorce since that statistic came out. I think it spiked quite a lot as well, and that would surely be because of social media.
She would recommend moderation. Well I am sorry, but moderation is quite impossible, just as is impossible to enforce the law entirely to all subjects with full effectivity.
