This is just a masterpiece through and through. Musical theatre is where you guys always shine head and shoulders above any other group, and this is no exception. Every one of you was incredible in this, and the set/lighting/arrangement were all exceptional. Well done, folks.
Every single member of Voiceplay could be a superstar soloist. There is sooooooo much talent in this band. The way they incorporate guest singers is flawless as well. Geoff and Layne make some of the best a’capella arrangements I’ve ever heard. Ugh, I will never get enough of Voiceplay
Did someone already mention how adorable Cesar is? You have to love his positive energy and when he turned towards Geoff (at 5:30 or so because I knew you) so sweet
Emoni + Cesar = PERFECT duet! Their voices compliment each other so well and blend and meld perfectly! 😍 Layne was absolutely on FIRE on this song...my God it was perfection! Bubbles, beats and...bloody amazing bits! 🤪 (obviously I'm not musically talented! Lol) Eli's notes are always so pure and perfect, even when they feel like they should be a vocal crack AND those lighting/visual effects were pure joy to watch...AMAZING work!🤩 Geoff showing us his range and hitting those notes that make our skin tingle all the way from our toes (those bass rumbles make my toes curl) right to the top of our heads (HOW can he sing such a range of notes with such purity and clarity???)...beautiful! 🥰 And not forgetting Rachel who slots so wonderful into every little gap and sings so beautifully and powerfully, matching wonderfully with Emoni AND with the rest of the band, while still keeping her voice true...fabulous!💗 Honestly, this piece might be my absolute favourite...you are marvellous and...maybe I should listen again from the top...💕💕💕
Geoff sir.. this arrangement is absolutely outstanding.. I could say wicked but 🤣 all your voices and every single part of this song goes so well together. It’s all so smooth and just.. perfection. ITS WICKED
I love how no one is afraid to be expressive with their hands as well as their faces. As singers, we tend to use our hands to visualize what we physically do when we sing. Every action they do has a purpose and I think it's amazing that they don't try to hide that
5:55... Wow. The six hold their chord, letting it build into a tense, discordant harmony and drop into an instant of pure silence.. And the lights flash green, and Geoff Castellucci hits that iconic bassline. VoicePlay builds a stunning crescendo, and Rachel Potter soars into the melody. Incredible. Stunning.
It just hit me that - despite having seen this medley a million times - As Long As You're Mine wasn't included and now I'm dying to hear Rachel and Eli sing a full version.
Also at 3:02, EVERY TIME, my brain goes "boom, crash, bam boom! KIDDING!!!" It's been a little over SEVEN YEARS since the Broadway Top 10 came out with its tiny snippet of Popular. Guys, TONY was in that one, that's how long it's been. Such a kick of nostalgia, but the thing that really struck me was how much better the bassline was in the 2021 version. People don't realize how much Geoff has improved since VP started. He's gotten lower and he's learned subharmonics, sure, but he's also gotten the confidence to show all that off. I'd like to think that 2021 Geoff wrote the bassline that 2014 Geoff wanted to sing back then. Again, just wow.
Cesar looks at Geoff with such genuine love and admiration and appreciation at 5:29 that each time I watch it, a sob catches in my throat and tears come to my eyes. There's no acting there. Now, contrast that with the interaction between Cesar and Geoff at 3:43... Cesar: KILL THE WITCH! Geoff: You okay, pal? Cesar: Yeah, I'm fine... That's one of the many incredible things about a VoicePlay video - the dedication to characterization and the telling of the story. They aren't just standing there singing, but rather, there's thought put into little looks, gestures, facial expressions. This storytelling is helped along by the amazing light show that Eli gave us - whether you realize you recognize them or not, those lighting cues between each song, and sometimes even within a song, draw you into the story even deeper. Now for the music stuffs. One interesting thing that really struck me was when two singers came together in unison (Rachel and Emoni at 4:58 and 5:22; Cesar and Geoff at 5:29) which, to me, was very powerful in those moments in the story as it gave a sense of them being equals. Some cool flexes: -Geoff jumping TWO octaves at 0:55 from Ab1 to Ab3 -Cesar riffing up and Eli riffing down at 1:12 -The handoff of the solo from Rachel to Eli at 1:42 -Layne popping a bubble at 2:41 and then the cute head choreo move with the lyrics at 2:46, all while laying down his epic 7+ minute beatboxing extravaganza -Geoff's solo in "Wonderful" (3:16) - "here, let me do a quick range flex by beautifully singing a phrase in a range higher than people expect from me and then singing the next phrase an octave lower..." all while Eli nonchalantly holds down the bass line. -Applause and slack-jawed awe for that C#1 at the end, Geoff. 😯 The intertwining of lyrics and melody lines was absolutely brilliant - they swirled around in my head like a kaleidoscope. The tempo changes/ritards, that goosebump-inducing dip into Lydian at 5:49 (is that in the original...?), that complex orchestral-feeling penultimate chord at the end...it was all just masterful. Although the right chord progression frequently brings tears to my eyes, not many songs make me teary due to the sentimentality and emotion of the performance and the grandeur of the arrangement, but this is one of them. (Sorry for always posting such wordy comments. I just always want to shine a light on all the things I appreciate...and there are always a lot of them...)
I am not musically trained and I learned so much from people like you. Never apologize for a long discourse when it’s full of information. One of my favorite parts was in Wonderful. I love the little shoulder bobs and Cesar’s face is just so joyful. He has such an expressive voice and expressive face. What a great addition he makes to the team! Oh. And at 5:47. Chills. So beautiful!
Anyone else love the hand gesture Rachel made when she hit the triple-high-note in defying gravity (which she hit like it was nothing)? They’re all so talented, this was magic to watch 🤯
Geoff, this is an absolutely *stunning* arrangement. Never fails to make me cry and smile at the same time. And Layne, with your insane beatboxing - Eli with the beautiful rockstar voice even in the highest tones. And Cesar with your angelic voice ( and sometimes demonic rage - "Kill the witch!"), always bringing a warm nostalgia to my heart. And Rachel and Emoni - No one could've done Elphaba and Glinda like you! I love the *soul* Emoni brought to "popular" and Rachel's "Defying Gravity" never fails to make me feel like I'm soaring. And don't get me started on the tears at "For Good"....
Omg to begin with I love this play its one of my favorites... this medley was AMAZING... absolutely love Rachel as Elphaba her voice was perfect for it
Rachel's voice is just so fantastic. I agree with whoever said that she should just join Voiceplay permanently. Of course she's been doing a bang-up job on her own on Broadway.

I'm so impressed by Rachel here. It's hard to take a more supporting role and not overshadow someone with how strong of a voice she has. This was a beautiful arrangement and I loved it!
You can tell they put a LOT of work and love into this. All of VoicePlay’s songs are my favorite version of the song. They are truly talented, as they do almost every part of the production by themselves. No other group is even close to their talent. Most of the other groups just do the singing. 🥰🎶❣️
Thank you for having Emoni singing for Glinda. Having someone who is canonically popular and beautiful played by someone who is “fat” (in quotes because I use it to describe myself but other people may find it offensive) can be incredibly helpful for people’s self esteem. It just goes to show that we don’t all have to look like the magazine models to be beautiful. Also am I the only one who noticed that Tony has been involved more with VoicePlay videos lately, behind the scenes for the last two they released. It might just be coincidence, but it does show that they’re still on good terms.
Yeah they film a lot of videos at Pattycake Studios, Layne and Tony own it so it's natural that's one of the first places they go to. Love the rest tho!
I totally agree with you. Emoni is a big girl and is absolutely smoking hot. I find the obsession with tiny, skinny girls a bit weird to be honest. It's fine if a woman is naturally thin, but some women are naturally big even with a good diet and exercise. I imagine Emoni is phenomenally active with a very busy schedule, but is probably like a lot of us in that it's easy to put weight on and hard to lose it. She's gorgeous, talented, has the voice of an angel and looks like she's a lot of fun.
The fact that this doesn’t even have 500K views yet just makes me think that the 1,000 or so that love this song have just been listening on repeat and everyone else is horribly wrong
Geoff went through all that work to get from "For Good" in D-flat major to the opening of "Defying Gravity" in B major, and then the song only stays there for like a measure and heads straight back into D-flat major. LOL, that's dedication!
This is better than Glee or Pentatonix or both of them COMBINED. The complexity in this areangement is INSANE, not to mention the talent of the performers!! Wicked is my favourite musical so this is extra special for me!!
okay we've seen Peter Hollens and Nick Pitera do a Wicked medley but this just elevated what a Wicked medley should BE. Geoff's arrangement ability is OUTSTANDING. in the span of ten hours ive been listening to it at least three time an hour just to get every bit I can of it and I'm STILL picking out bits and pieces I didn't hear the first time. Fucking FABULOUS. Rachel is SERVING Elphaba vibes and Emoni is embodying Glinda I'm 100% here for it
Peter also did one with the Wicked cast. I must say it’s better than Peter and Nick Pitera’s, but nothing matches this one. This completely blew us away and my new number one with Hoist the Colours right on its tail. I wonder what’s going on with Geoff this late in the year…
Defying Gravity is my GO to VP angry cheer up song and because I’m from Australia or Oz that “nobody in all of Oz” line REALLY gets me pumped up and improves my day
The world is about to be introduced to a phenomenon. Acapella done with style, creativity, and with harmonies that change the game. Vocal quality and arrangement that has no peer. For those that are just finding VoicePlay you are in for a musical treat that'll open you up to a world of pleasure and fun for all your senses. This is what acapella is meant to be. This is VoicePlay! To Geoff, Layne, Eli, and Cesar, thank you for all you do to make the world a little brighter. Rachel, you'll always be the fifth member of this extraordinary team to me. And Emoni, thank you for sharing your gift with us! You all are special talents.
There have now been pretty much the same number of total views on reactions to this, as there have been on the video itself! This should be in the millions by now, it's just amazing!!
The most amazing Thanksgiving gift I have ever received. My husband and I went and saw Wicked years ago, and this is my first Thanksgiving without him in 53 years, so your reminder of an amazing time together brought a sweet sadness and thankfulness that I had him for so long. I wish I could hug every one of you.
Obviously the vocals, harmonies and arrangement are superb as expected, but can we talk about Layne? Holy crap. I don't think I have had my mind blown by a vocal percussion performance like that since the first time I heard a Jeff Thatcher solo. Can't wait to see the reactors making the same stupid faces I was undoubtedly making.
I saw this show with my sister years ago. Going to Broadway shows is something we haven't been able to do in a while. Thank you for giving me a happy memory. I'm not crying. You are.
Love this genius arrangement even more now than when I first heard it in its Patreon debut! I keep finding new things to appreciate in it every time I watch it and listen to it. 🥰
The arrangement……omg it’s of the chart. Freaking hell, just when you think you have seen the best…..they raise the bar again. These guys/girls….they are freaking awesome.
11/16. THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE PERFORMANCES! OUTSTANDING HARMONIZING! VP HAS GIVEN ME MANY HOURS OF PLEASURE OVER THE LAST 18 MONTHS! THANK YOU! RACHEL AND EMONI ARE WONDERFUL! AND, OF COURSE, ALL THE VP SINGERS ARE OUTSTANDING!

Yeah they film a lot of videos at Pattycake Studios, Layne and Tony own it so it's natural that's one of the first places they go to. Love the rest tho!
@@iamthegreatpapyrus2905 Are you under the impression that those are mutually exclusive?
I totally agree with you. Emoni is a big girl and is absolutely smoking hot. I find the obsession with tiny, skinny girls a bit weird to be honest. It's fine if a woman is naturally thin, but some women are naturally big even with a good diet and exercise. I imagine Emoni is phenomenally active with a very busy schedule, but is probably like a lot of us in that it's easy to put weight on and hard to lose it. She's gorgeous, talented, has the voice of an angel and looks like she's a lot of fun.
Yes, love this version
Rachel one of the most talented singers I’ve ever heard. Just frickin’ incredible.
So glad to see Rachel again! The whole medley is great but having Rachel back makes it very special!
Thill love this just as much now as I did when it was released. Such a powerful arrangement and so beautiful.
I really love when Rachel Potter sings with VP. Her tone blends in so well with their voices.
Her voice in general is stunning. Love her tone so much and she's mixing incredibly well
The fact that this doesn’t even have 500K views yet just makes me think that the 1,000 or so that love this song have just been listening on repeat and everyone else is horribly wrong
Geoff went through all that work to get from "For Good" in D-flat major to the opening of "Defying Gravity" in B major, and then the song only stays there for like a measure and heads straight back into D-flat major. LOL, that's dedication!
I watched Hannah Bayles react to this in school and I just about cried. I’m still so shaken up, this was absolutely incredible
This is better than Glee or Pentatonix or both of them COMBINED. The complexity in this areangement is INSANE, not to mention the talent of the performers!! Wicked is my favourite musical so this is extra special for me!!
All I can say is...you brought a grown man to tears.
okay we've seen Peter Hollens and Nick Pitera do a Wicked medley but this just elevated what a Wicked medley should BE.
I wonder what’s going on with Geoff this late in the year…
This was TOOOOO good
ok but rachel sing defying gravity was just a blessing, she’s amazing!! great job everyone, geoff did great with the arrangements ❤️❤️
Happy #Wicked premier!🥳
Wtf Rachel’s voice is literally amazing her defying gravity is so impressive
1:41 that transition is everything, I will never get tired of your voice ELI!!!
All of the singers are great in this, but can we show some extra love for Layne, please? His vocal percussion is AMAZING!
Defying Gravity is my GO to VP angry cheer up song and because I’m from Australia or Oz that “nobody in all of Oz” line REALLY gets me pumped up and improves my day
1/17. THIS IS A SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE. "WICKED" IS INSPIRATIONAL. IT IS FABULOUS THE WAY VOICE PLAY WEAVES EVERYTHING TOGETHER. WONDERFUL HARMONIES!
Funniest moment: 3:43
Cesar: *screams* "KILL THE WITCH"
*looks at Geoff with the Right dad look*
Geoff: gives Cesar a dad look
Cesar: "sorry dad"
1/18. "WICKED" IS INSPIRATIONAL. OFTEN, I REALIZE THAT IM HUMMING "WICKED". IT IS A DELIGHTFUL. SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE! OUTSTANDING HARMONIES!
Always happy to see more Rachel Potter collabs. :)
How could you not love Rachel Potter? The rest of these guys are amazing, but Rachel is just the bizness.
What I love is that the group does a variety of music and it's wonderful.
Look. This is absurd. I don’t even know Wicked and this brought me to tears. Just spectacular.
There have now been pretty much the same number of total views on reactions to this, as there have been on the video itself! This should be in the millions by now, it's just amazing!!
I was so much hoping to hear Rachel sing „Defying Gravity“ 🤩🙌 this is absolutely amazing - all of them! 💙
💖
❤️
I'm sorry he's gone, but I'm glad this made you smile ❤️
❤️❤️
The short staccato of that last chord was criminal. I wanted it to go on forever! 😩❤️
Ive only seen a few videos of Emoni but she seems like someone thats always overflowing with love and laughter
2/1. "WICKED" IS INSPIRATIONAL! OUTSTANDING HARMONIES! IT IS DELIGHTFUL! BRAVO, VOICE PLAY!
Despite my unfamiliarity with Wicked I enjoyed it very much! I looked forward to a day when Voiceplay may one day tour again so I cannae them live!
You are.
Oml why is nobody talking about Rachel Potter's rendition of Defying Gravity ! My absolute favorite song from the musical and she KILLED IT ❤❤✨✨
OMG Layne! That run at the beginning of Defying Gravity! Utterly amazing!!
I'm speechless. These are all of my favorite people being amazing in all their creative capacities. Have a comment for the algorithm.
3:46 “dude...take it down a notch” 🤣 the splash of humor in all your videos is always the best. Thanks for making it amazing AND fun! ♥️
i literally don’t think i’ve ever been this speechless
2/28. INSPIRATIONAL! Thank you for including the lyrics! The harmonizing is out of this world! Keep dancing through life.
6:40 I think my soul left my body, so amazing!!!
2/17. PERFECTION! INSPIRATIONAL!
Voiceplay is always awesome, and so is Rachel, but Emoni is absolutely stunning in this - that solo moment of For Good is *chills* every time.
Great job VoicePlay. Hope you get at least a grammy nomination!
