Magnificent performance, by the way. We are seeing Alissa Czisny skating to "La Valse Triste". A historical performance of note. Only Alissa could capture the spirit of Sibelius.
Sibelius’ Valse Triste really resonates with me. It made me fall in love with Tessa and Scott back in 2006/2007, and now it definitely cements my admiration for Alyssa. Artistically, it really takes skaters of their calibre to pull this off. I feel like a kid in a candy store when I get to see new exciting programmes at the beginning of a season. What a treat!
I can see the Broadway lighting for this number: spectral, with fog and a whispy costumn for her. The end of the programme, where she looks into the eyes of Death, who has come to her door. Neo-Romanticism, doing us all a turn.
Dear juaquino: Thankyou for your input. I'm a big fan of Alissa's and of course want her to compete in top form. She has enlisted the advice of sports psychologists. But the human body needs, I think, 23 amino acids--meat is a source of them. I think the reason she went veggie is, from what I've heard, her sister had a bout with cancer and not eating meat is supposed to help prevent cancer. So maybe that's why. Sometimes I don't feel like eating meat, but other times my body craves it.
Alissa didn't pick the music here for her lp--Pasquale Camerlengo did. "La Valse Triste" was a big hit when it was first performed (we have the 1904 version, the 1903 version did not survive). It's popular in Europe. Alissa will, I suppose, have a new costume for Skate America to help define the music. She has enough potential points in this program to win Gold.
Love Alissa's facial expressions at the "kiss 'n cry'--reminded me of Kiira Korpi. Huge crowd. Good skate for a first show of a new program. Alissa should eat steaks to improve strength. Alissa should win at Skate America--her main competition will be Carolina Kostner. Heard Ksenia Makarova is recovering from a hip injury. The Russkis, Tuktamysheva and Sotnikova are certainly to be reckoned with. Anybody notice that Tuktamysheva looks like Johhny Weir!
@Porporinablu I totally respect your opinion :). Granted, her overall status is nowhere near Tessa and Scott’s (plus comparing single skaters to ice dancers feels slightly like comparing apples to oranges anyway, and when it comes a waltz, a single skater is always at a disadvantage). However, as much as I love their interperation and as much as I would normally hold it against skaters of lesser status who go for iconic pieces of music, I still think that Alissa can do justice to this waltz.
@DreamsInWhite I feel the opposite. Valse triste is a masterpiece and, since Scott and Tessa skated it on what is one of the most delicious program I've ever seen, it's really linked to them. I think using some pieces of music is a dangerous choice, e.g. overused ones like habanera, because you won't ever be like Katarina Witt''s Carmen. Nowadays the most dangerous choice can be use a Virtue&Moir music. even if this is not ice dance I compare Alyssa to them, and she's not half the skaters.
This is lovely... but I worry that she'll relax and not attack her elements because the music puts her (and me) in a lull. It's not bad music... I just think the slow section of any program is tough and this is where her mistakes were.
Juaquino: Here's the science about eating: the HYPOTHALAMUS in the brain regulates eating. The paraventricular hypothalamus tells us what to eat, the lateral hypothalamus tells us to start eating and the ventromedial hypothalamus tells us to stop eating. Anorexia is caused by the "Set Point" in the hypothalamus being thrown off normal setting by various external factors. And fat people have 10x the normal amount of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens in the brain--they're addicted to food.
@gallantrycross There are other sources of protein and iron besides meat... she should not and does not have to compromise her dietary beliefs and habits to improve her skating. I do not believe that her problem is because she is "eating salads" as you compared it to winning World War II. If she does want to improve muscle mass, she can always use approved dietary supplements and vitamins... even organic ones. In my opinion, she's better off seeing a sports psychologist than eating meat.
I looked up some data--20% of anorexics die. Being fat takes 5 to 20 years off a person's life. Proper eating habits and exercise are critical. But too many girls in school don't pay attention in biology. Anyway, skaters get a lot of exercise and are typically in good shape. As for the science in figure skating--did you know that twirling figure skaters are gyroscopes and any force applied to them has a reaction that is 90 degrees out? It's not just about pretty costumes.
Alissa is a vegetarian, by the way, she should eat steaks to improve muscle strength (Rochette, for instance, is all muscle and can power her way through any program). The USA did not win WWII by eating salads.
not really liking the music, too sad and boring...i think the only part i like is the section with her footwork to the end. i'm hoping this program will grow on me and i can't wait to see her short.

So prim and so proper as a ballerina on ice... Elegance always shine through Alissa!

She is amazing.

This program could go above 120.

I like the music. I think it was seeing the same costume she used last season that made this drag.
The music is a well known Sibelius piece that resonates with classically attuned audiences.

How many triples did she do in this program? She said she was going for seven. I keep losing count.
was that a triple triple in the beginning? i couldn't quite tell

Brilliant, I thought I was at the Bolshoi Ballet.

@Sapphira514 A pescatarian eats fish, not a vegetarian.
bellissima :))

@allenb486 its not specified what kind of vegetarian alissa is...point it, shes not anorexic

Hopefully she'll be the next skater to do Playboy. Maybe Mirai, but she's not a champ yet.
2 1/2 weeks to Skate America!
Science is not "nonsense".

Did she swear at 5:35?!? o.O'
Stop writing so much nonsense. There are so many vegetarians in this world ...
