Excellent video. I have handled my weed problem with a hoe for years. And kept weeds under control for the first 3 weeks. It was taking 2 1/2 hours a week of my time that I just did not have. This year I switched to a wheel hoe and that 2 1/2 hour a week job turned into a pleasureful 10 minutes. I do NOT have a weed problem any more! I LOVE the Hoss wheel hoe!! KUDOS!
Really good video and message. Simple, effective and permanent. No fancy expensive tools can replace the effectivity of someone willing to move his body and perform work with simplicity, regularity and ruggedness 👍
Me and my boys went to Lake Chelan last week and I got home to end up in the ER. I have ulcers & gallstones. My tomatoes are just getting big and about to change color. My fear of food is real high right about now! I sure do wish I bought Hoss Tool seeds! Everything your videos have been tried and true for me so far! I have faith that they won’t tear my stomach up like you say
And here in the south that's just how it is... we sweat a lot! But everything he says in this video is spot on... tested by me. It's surprisingly easy to push those sweeps, and they do an excellent job. I just have the thin ones, and they work great for me, but I have very sandy soil, probably not the best for heaver soils that many of you have. I've got a bunch of mulch right now that's being a pain in the butt... I'm in the process of going back to grass... the mulch is just too much work to maintain. I'll say it again... fought weeds for years... light cultivation every week is the answer to most of your trouble... it just works!
Watching you talking about your grass made me realize just how green the grass is, given the heat one would expect everything to be near death as it is where I live
The grass has been receiving a little secondary water from the overhead sprinkler that we use to get the cover crops up and going. Also, this time of year we get frequent, afternoon showers. Not a lot of rain, but enough to keep the grass green.
Yep, we never got hungry enough to eat perslane either. Didn't matter if it was in the garden or a soybean field, it was a weed. This one tool, with a few extra attachments may make me stick with in-ground gardening and put off raised beds, especially since my sandy loam garden soil composition is very similar.
Bermuda is my nemesis. I would never intentionally plant next to my garden because I would spend all my time trying to keep it out. We have been planting St augustine around the garden because it will kill out other weeds and is easier to manage its creep.
We just keep them under the shed. We'll put a coat of linseed oil on the handles in the winter and sharpen the attachments with a file, but that's about it.
Great video. Bermuda grass creeping in is the worst. I'm ordering one of these wheel hoes tomorrow! I like grass pathways as well. Wood chips might work well in deserts and high elevation gardens, but in the deep south, where it's 100 degrees and raining every day in the summer, wood chips are a disaster, or at least have been for me. Wood chips don't suppress all weeds, they simply select for weeds with vigorous underground rhizomes like dollarweed and prickly sida. I made the mistake of adding 4 truckloads of wood chips to my garden a few years ago. It looked awesome for a few months and suppressed a lot of grass, but now there's just dollarweed everywhere and it's a huge mess. I'm probably going to switch to grass or sand pathways soon. Pinestraw pathways also seems like an interesting option in the deep south. Anyway great video, thanks for sharing, your garden looks awesome
We don't really do anything with ours besides mow it once a week, and it gets a some overhead water on occasion when we're watering plots that don't have drip.
@@gardeningwithhoss That's how I do it for now. Dig up the weeds. Use no chemicals on the yard but liqui cop and total disease control. Bag the clippings for garden compost.
Timely video. I'm fixin' to put my sweeps to work this afternoon. Are yall gonna bring back the harrow attachment? It seems to have been out of stock for good while, now. Thanks.
Perslane, it was the favorite vegetable of Gandhi. Perslane is the only land vegetable with as much dha and epa omgega 3 fatty acids as seaweed. I haven't got that hungry yet either.
I just bought a two-wheel wheel hoe and I love it. Quick question: what spacing between rows do you use for (a) southern peas (b) mustard greens. Thanks.
Do you not have the cultivators or discs like a tractor anymore for the wheel hoe? Those seemed like they would be the ticket! The new sweeps seem to be an easier option now for sure.
We do have a disk harrow attachment. It works well for breaking the crust, throwing a little soil to plants or for planting cover crops. It won't uproot a weed though.
Enjoyed the video. If an old lady can only have one or the other which tool do you suggest the new sweeps or the 8 or 12 inch Oscillating attachment ? By the way, I love my wheel hoe. I’ve had it for years and it’s still going strong!
How do I start a plot? I’ve tried different methods, but I can’t seem to get it right. If I’m starting from pasture with Bermuda grass, clovers, weeds galore, and some other grass that has rhizome roots, do I start by tilling, discing, or maybe scraping all the grass off with the bucket on my tractor? I checked for a video, but didn’t see one.
The till and tarp technique works great for Bermuda grass. Till the area and tarp it for a few weeks. Pull back the tarp and till again. Put the tarp back on and repeat this process 3-4 times.
Aggravate it to death and it will eventually go away. We used to have it pretty bad in a few plots, but we just run through there with the wheel hoe twice a week and it will eventually give up.
@@gardeningwithhoss I've never had that happen. We must have a different nut grass variety here in middle to eastern NC. Ours actually has a nut down in the ground hence nut grass. If we don't get the nut it keeps coming back and coming back and keeps doubling. When I weed I always try to dig down and get the nut.
I tried to call you today, I have a question what fertilizer do I use to plant okra, and corn. My okra that I planted ,the seed weren't any good so I'm planting it again.
U will enjoy plowing with hoss...oil the axles. Keep them shimmed as necessary. The tool/will possibly never wear out. A person can farm all day with that cultivator! Dennis

Can you /send me 2 of the widest oscillator blades (is it approximately 12 /inch wide to fit on the one or two wheeled antique garden plow????all right, all right, alrighty then.... Dennis near Fort Riley KS.
I understand that the tool helps to keep the weed pressure down by running through the soil every week or so but that doesn't help the potential buyer understand the amount of energy it will require to do the initial sweep(s) to remove the grass to get that border for the garden. Running it through an area with barely any weeds is like the commercials about shavers for women showing the blades being used on a hairless leg!
I know this is an old thread. But, your wheel hoe is not a primary tillage device! If one has a really small scale get a heavy duty chop hoe, like a mattock without the pointy end. Or use a shovel and try the double dig technique. I use my walking tractor for primary tillage, rotary plow, and power harrow make for impressive beds. That being said, scale is everything! Gardening is such a great low impact workout! My sub 2,000 square foot garden can help me burn hundreds of calories, my Hoss wheel hoe just makes it easier to manage just like Travis said! I have a lot of fun doing flower beds with just the heavy hoe, broad fork, and my wheel hoe! I even using the little cultivating disc on my wheel hoe to work in soil amendments into the top layer of soil. Man have fun and sweat a little!

Welcome to the channel Larry!
What would you recommend on creating a new plot? Would these tactics work? Or do you use a tiller?
We do till on a new plot, amend with compost and as much organic matter as possible. Then once we plant, use the wheel hoe to maintain.
I've added wood chips for mulch and it draws the nitrogen out of the soil and you'll end up with blossom end rot
Good idea!
Thanks for this!
I just bought a two-wheel wheel hoe and I love it. Quick question: what spacing between rows do you use for (a) southern peas (b) mustard greens. Thanks.
I normally do 36 inch spacing on Peas and 24-30 inch spacing on mustard.
Also a good way to get a little physical exercise
What harm does a few weeds cause? They can get too numerous or healthy. Dennis

Hey do you guys know if it hurts to cut off long sweet potato vines that grow way out of my raised beds.
Doesn't hurt at all.
Hoss Tools hey thx, I like watching, thanks for your time. God bless. (Old guy from Arkansas)🇺🇸
Would you say that this tool would equate to the push pull hoe to do the job?...not the stirrup hoe I mean. Thanks
Same concept, just a slightly different design.

I think the Sweeps provide a more versatility that might give them the slight "edge" -- pun intended.
Hoss Tools thank you!
This doesn’t dry out the topsoil?
it does not.
Hey Travis, I have a question about your silage tarps. Do you guys make custom sizes? My garden is 26’x56’.
We don't make custom sizes. We cut many at a time and have fixed sizes. You're more than welcome to customize it yourself though.
