This brings back so many memories, I used Pyrex coffee pots for years and years. Couple little hints ... wet the basket before you add the grinds, it will keep them from falling into the water. Once the water boils lower the flame so it perks slowly. Your coffee will taste even better.
Oooh, Great tipe, Mary Jane!! Thanks so much, I'll try that next time I perc!!
Yes, we found one of these. I liked electric percolators but didn't care for the coffee the pyrex made until I learned to turn the heat down.
These made the BEST coffee.
It was heavily featured in the television show, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.
Mary always had it on the stove was always offering anyone that came into the house, a cup of coffee from it, most of the scenes took place in the kitchen. It was always there on the stove, this would have been 1974 to 1976, of course, Mary would have been married in the late 60s when she would have purchased or been gifted. The coffee pot.
Which is fairly accurate in the 70s. I remember the neighbor lady always had one of these on her gas stove.
I found a 9 cup today at an estate sale for $25. I never seen a glass percolator. I love the vintage look. Thank you for your video. Made coffee for mom and I. Taste so good.
They come out n 6-8,4-6 and 2-4 cups
Ok... so I’ve had one of these in my cupboard now for about 11yrs, inherited from my father. I thought it was a tea pot 😂🤣😅😂😃🤣
Today, I was looking to buy a coffee percolator and did some research and found your video. Haha. THANK GOD! 🤣
Now I’m going to put the ole girl back into commission.
Thank you for educating me about Pyrex percolators 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Ha!! That's totally something I'd do. Check out some of the comments below on how to make coffee. Note the comment from maryjane20 that I pinned below. Even making it my way it tastes wonderful. Her way, even better!!
My grandmother had one of these in the 60's. I loved her coffee. Thank you for the memories Roxy
You bet, Terri!
I have this in the larger size. It is my all time favorite coffee maker and I have a collection of different types, both vintage and new. Purchased it over Etsy and it was worth every penny. I use mine a little differently though. There is not a ground in any serving cup. Fill with distilled water. With the filter cup still outside of the pot, fill filter cup with freshly ground coffee, up to the edge of center metal collar. Carefully, shake to level the coffee. Rinse the glass base to remove any small coffee grounds. Now place it into the glass pot. Put metal top filter and glass top in place now. On medium high, allow to reach a percolate. Then decrease heat to simmer only. Perc for 7 minutes. Do not allow to boil. Remove from heat and let sit 3 minutes. Then remove the filter cup and stem before pouring. Pour into thermal carafe. The fractional amount of grounds remaining, will remain in the pot. Perfectly engineered, free of plastic parts, and so easy to thoroughly clean every part. Agree with your love for Norwegian Egg Coffee also. That is the best method when using a pot only.
I have got to try it this way. If it tasted great using my method, I can imagine yours would taste even better!!
Thanks for that, and I like the absence of any plastic!
That is the coolest thing I have one just like that tucked away in my kitchen cuburd it belonged to my husbands Mother. You inspired me now I'm going to pull mine out and try it. Thanks Roxy!
Let me know how it turns out, Sandra!! Check out the tips from other viewers, below and above.
MMM! I'll take a cup and a cookie please! Memories of my Dad and me, lol, I smell coffee and Aqua Velva!
Aqua Velva! That's a blast from the past, too, Chrys! My Dad wore Old Spice, still around and it still makes me think of him when I smell it. :)
Yes! But the bottles are plastic now...;(@@roxyfur
Love the percolators. When coffee was an art form to watch.
What a way to start the day... calm and perky at the same time!
I use to have one of these in the late 90's. I think mine was from the late 50's. I miss it.!!
A friend just picked up a 4-cup Pyrex percolator in front of a neighbour's house. I've been using an old Melita drip pot but will try this very soon. It was made in the U.S.A. and has the number 7754-B on it. I worked for Corning Glass Works in Canada from 1967 to 1974.
Cool! I bet you could get free or inexpensive products. Did they have a company store? And what a lucky find for your friend!!
@@roxyfur They did have a store and I'm still using many items. My friend has never had a drink of coffee in his life but he loves to pick up free "stuff."
I have my Mum's and Nanny's.My tip is when you make it..You'll never go back to a coffee maker. But add a sprinkle of salt to the grounds enough to see it.It makes the smoothest coffee. Mum and Nanny always did it. I do too.And everyone loves my coffee. I have a garage full of them.LOL I now collect them.
I have heard that salt tip but never understood or heard why. Thanks for the tip, Brad! Are you in the states? Where are you finding these? I rarely see them in antique stores and never in thrift stores. Once in a blue moon I see at garage sales... I'm so glad I have mine!
mine sputters or spills every once in a while and i have it in low heat its towards the end when coffee almost done tho wonder why this happens its the exact percolator as this one....(weird it looks like a bubble of air bursts and spills)
Omg, my dad has one, and I love it! I been looking for one
It makes such great coffee!!
I have something similar and is the Bialetti espresso maker, the coffee comes really strong and quick 👍. thanks for sharing!
So nice to hear the scrubby! This is the coolest perculator ever!!!
Hee!! I love it on Saturdays, especially!
I love vintage!!!! I have, an old metal stove top pot. great coffee
It really is the best, isn't it, Rochelle? I get this one out every weekend for morning coffee, so nice to relax while it perks :)
I remember my parents having one of these.
I just bought one at a garage sale for a dollar! It's like new but I haven't used one for nearly 40 yrs so I'm watching you.
Awesome!! That's a steal of a deal. Check out MaryJaneW20 below, her comment will make better coffee.
She's right,makes best coffee
I have my grandmothers Pyrex coffee percolator. It is the exact one as yours. The coffee tastes so good as well
aren't they awesome!! I love mine and use on special occasions :)
Cool, first time I see it 👌 ☕️
Question How many scoops? And what type of coffee do you use??? And how do you know when it's done? I'm very interested...
I bought a 9-cup Pyrex percolator that was in the box, sealed and never opened, for only $100.00, (exactly). I opened it up and have been using it quite often. I think that was an amazing price, as some Pyrex percolators were being sold used, and they were the same price or more. It was a pretty rare find, especially for the price!
Tell me you kept the box... That is an amazing price, I've seen these used also but a few upwards of $200! Don't you love the coffee and the whole process of it all, MaDonna?
I did keep the box! I opened it the wrong way, though; but that’s okay. I love to watch the coffee percolate, and the coffee tastes amazing!
Grew up with one from the 60's. The difference was the filter/stem assembly was all aluminum. Loved the smell of morning coffee from it.
Right?!? These new fangled makers don't even come close! YFW, Patricia!
I have a pyrex coffee maker my mother gave it to me but I do not have the little original coffee basket that is in glass and that goes with the coffee maker, I use a small metal coffee basket that I have bought at a used goods store
Isn't it nummy?!? Keep on the lookout if you want, I see just the baskets often at thrift stores and garage sales.
Tfs that was cool to watch. Enjoy!
Jeanette :)
Thanks for watching and commenting, Mrs Netrix!
Oh my! I grew up with one similar to this in the 60's. If you have problems with coffee grounds my mom would put a kleenex tissue over the bottom metal piece (the one with holes). That would keep out the grounds from getting into your cup.
Thanks UtahGmaw!! Our moms sure had all the life hacks down!! Thanks so much for letting me know about that trick!
i have one that was my grandmothers I use to use when I was single have not used it in years decided to take it out and going to make my first 6 cups in the morning can't wait to taste it again
Let me know how it goes, Grant!!
@@roxyfur it was quite weak but good will make some adjustments this afternoon on my next pot and much hotter then a drip
my percolator is missing the top round filter can I still use it without it....
I remember these growing up.....My parents had one.......So are these back on the market or is this a thrift find????.............A good thing about these percolators .....you can make your coffee as strong as you'd like........Cool......
I thrifted it a few years ago but I still see them all the time at garage, estate and flea sales.
It’s boiling. That makes it bitter. Perc should be slow pops. Base liquid should NEVER boil
I have one. Bought it at an antique store.
Isn't it fun?!? I hope your coffee was as tasty as mine, Dawn!
My MR COFFEE BLEW OUT IM THINKEN GETTIN ONE OF THESE. I MISS OLD ONES. THE COFFEE IS TEN TIMES TASTIER.THERE GOING FOR HUNDREDS OF DOLLERS. SOUNDS LIKE NICE PEOPLE IN BACK ROUND. THANKS FOR VIDEO. YES IM GOING TO BU Y ONE.
Im new to this they tell me I have to ground my own coffee im like huh? lol! is there a particular coffee you recommend
My folks had one of these back in the 60's. A lot of coffee made in that old pot - great memories.
It's a great cup of coffee!
Omg!!! Haven't seen one for ever
It's the best tasting coffee, too!
I bought my antique Pyrex percolator over E-bay. I use it to brew Yerba Mate Tea. I use Taragui Sin Palo Yerba Mate Tea. It is all leaves and does not contain stems. It is one of the few Yerba Mate Teas that suggests using either a French Coffee Press or a Coffee Percolator, when brewing. Of course it makes great tasting coffee too.
Is that similar to yerba santa? What does yerba mate help with?
@@roxyfur I believe santa has the leaves and stems and sin palo just has the leaves. The sin palo will brew with the percolator, but the yerba santa with leaves and stems doesn't work as well, because the stems need to soak to get the most flavor. By the way I buy my yerba mate tea from Amazon.
About the product . Yerba Mate pure leaf.

That was fun
It sure does, John, thank you for watching!
very cool!!! yummy!!! Hi Scrubby!!! xoxo stephie
Hee! He said to say Hi Stephie!!
My parents had one somewhere from 64-74. I remember Mom taking it off the stove and setting it on the counter and the whole thing shattering into a million pieces. Have no idea why it did that.
Jeff Webb can you explain? And how do you prevent it from happening?
@@mycharmedunicorn8715 thermal shock happened because there was a drastic temperature change in the glass. Maybe she put it directly on a cold counter top? You have to decrease the temperature slowly to prevent it shattering. Place it on a towel or another burner that's turned off. Do that after you've turned the burner under the pot off for a couple of mintues to be safe.
Thank you for this tip. I would have done the same and broke my pot.
I just went down in the basement and got mine out. I have had it probably 15 years and never used it. My Dad is coming over for coffee later. His Mom had one of these always on the stove. Anyone know how to rearm it if you don’t drink it all at once? Mine is a 9 cup Pyrex.
What a nice surprise for your dad! My father-in-law used to rewarm coffee from the fridge and he didn't mind it. But my dad would put his percolated coffee it a thermos and it would stay warm til all day until evening. That might work good for overnight.
You have the flame too high. It'll work at half that setting. The glass stem part is not supposed to clang on the bottom that way. It takes patience, you don't want to burn the coffee or break the stem.
.
It didn't burn at all and the stem is fine. Everybody has their system! ;)
@@roxyfur Love those old percolators.
I got one of these at an estate sale and I'm so excited to try it! Do I just Google how much coffee to use? I think my pot might be a 6 cup. My electric Farberware percolater is alot faster but I'm excited to try this out - you're not the first person I've heard say that the taste of the finished product is superior. I was searching "How to use Flameware Percolator" and I saw your video come up and I said, "Roxyfur? I'm subscribed to her channel!" LOL Small world.
Wow! That's amazing, Bee! Yes google the cup size for measure. Also, check some of the comments below, a lot of good knowledge.
@@roxyfur I made coffee in the flameware percolator and it was soooo good! And honestly, it's not any more trouble than the electric percolator and actually is a little easier to clean. I am a little paranoid about breaking the percolator stem but so far so good. I get the water boiling before I put in the basket so I use an oven mitt to put it down in there - then it goes really fast at that point. So it's good because it is heating up while I'm getting the grounds ready. Yay!
All of the videos I've watched all show them on gas ranges, is it safe to do on an electric stove?
I'm not sure but It shouldn't break the pot or anything, it's able to withstand high heat...
Yes it is, but need a special thing to put between the pot and coils, otherwise it can crack and a sad mess can happen. See pyrex is made for heat, but heat it too quickly and it can crack, gas stove is kind of indirect kind of heat, but since electric has coils its more direct since the coils have contact to the pot. A glass electric range might be different however, since the coils are underneth the glass, and induction electric wont work at all cause it needs metal to create heat. Hope this helps, i know this comment is 8 months old, but seen it and figured id put my helpful two cents in :)
This percolator looks more like 1960s to me!
If I had to wait for this bugger every morning I'd scream and run to the nearest 7-11
And boiled coffee is the pits. Leave this as nostalgia when we didn't have anything better
Do you taste the coffee as you go along or timer??
No, just let it do its thing, some say to lower heat when it boils, some take it off the heat when it boils. Its your preference. Try different ways until its how you like your coffee!
I have a few that were my moms. What is the ratio?
Thanks for watching, Dan! Rule of thumb is 1 Tbl of coffee to 8 ounces of water. It's so good.
How much water and coffee to use?
I fill the base a little over 3/4 than use 4 Tbl. of coffee. It may be a try and taste for your liking. But it really is the best way to make coffee, Dean.
Loved hubby's supervisory input in the background. 😀
are you still using this percolator? i grew up with it, brings back sweet memories. :) ! but you need to turn the flame down low. you are boiling your coffee, big no-no, painful to watch. :( lol
UTubeIsMuhKrakane Literally we've always boiled it as most people do, tastes fabulous
search for how to make coffee in a percolator and even the first result is a video ruclips.net/video/qb4K1EwUDpo/видео.html and @ 3;34 he explains to _*turn the heat down to low_*. if most people are boiling their coffee at a rolling boil like yours they're doing it wrong. boiling is not good for coffee. but don't take my word for it, watch the video and try it and see if you don't like it better. i bet you do. :)
How do you know how long to boil it?
you watch the color of the coffee. the darker the stronger it is.
It gets to boiling pretty hard and will be dark. After a while you can figure out your taste preferences for a strong or light coffee :)
do y'all use instant coffee?
No, you'd want to use regular, brewing coffee for this, it's delicious, Rebecca!
@@roxyfur thank you! just ordered one in mercari and i was wondering what coffee instant or the other one you use on coffee makers
Circa 1952 - 1969
I remember waking up as a child to the smell of my dads coffee pot perculating on the stove. My mom would always yell at him for not watching the pot and it would boil over and mess up her stove. I remember them having a clear pot in the 60s. Those were the good ole days.
Me too! Only my Dad made the best coffee ever!
that sounds like a scene in my house on any given saturday morning. so many memories
Yes,the good ole days.
Pyrex Flameware should not be used on top of gas stoves. Pyrex notes that any type of glass can unexpectedly crack or shatter, including Pyrex glass, also known as borosilicate. The intense heat from a gas stove's burner or top places Pyrex under too much stress.
Via homesteady.com › Interior
Can I Use Pyrex Flameware on a Gas Stove?
I don't know about that, these were made to be used on open stove flames. They probably are talking about Pyrex bowls or casserole dishes.
Gosh 40s really?? I'd have said 60s or 70s. We had one in the 70s.
Some people take them apart fully handle and all to polish the metal to a shine.
Actually no a low heat is all you need because it's possible to burn the beans otherwise.
Dark roast beans in this will be bitter
Light coffee beans can taste a little weak but medium roast is .just right baby bear
They first came out in 1919. Kitchen aid mixers came out in the 40s also but they still sell them today
Thanks for sharing.
Fail! Not supposed to let the water boil let alone a rolling boil. Unless you like burnt coffee...
Did you taste it?
Try 1970s.
Actually no, I bought mine in the 1980’s.
@@noragallivant Actually, you date them by the logo on the bottom.
1:30 in, and it's all wrong.
This is how my dad made coffee and it was deliscious
To north americans and North American restaurants: Coffee goes back to Ethiopian & Arab tradition, offer it freely to guests and be hospitable , learn to be welcoming to guests.
I think a lot of people know this but wouldn't single out just one race, thank you for the reminder!
@@roxyfur We did a story on it , we meant North American culture
