They use to date, but I think it's been a while since they broke up. Too bad, I think this video proves that Animal's as Leaders style of music could actually use some vocals to get an even better result, while to be honest Kelela's solo career is not as musically interesting as it could have been.
10 to 12 years now listening to this and i really dont know why it never came out as a single or something, i really miss these times when ppl actually cared about their work and reputation as artists, always pushing further
For everyone that doesn't know: Kelela is now an established R&B artist, pushing the boundaries of that genre, such as FKA Twigs but in her own style. You should check it out. After I found her solo music I recognized the name and the voice from this video. Do yourself a favor and listen to her music, it is amazing.
She also sings the vocals on the TRAM album, with another singer that once sang in the kids choir of Aeroplane by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, crazy story haha
+Nicolas Arango or even quintuplets and septuplets going to a 4/4 beat you can divide time which equals beats by any prime number and while it's fucking difficult to in time divide 3 or 4 or 5 or 7 or 11 or 13 or 17 or 23 by 3 or 4 or 5 or 7 or 11 etc, it can be done, and it sounds fucking awesome how you can imply that the tempo has changed when really you're only dividing differently instead of whole easily counted repetitions
+Travis Vick i have yet to establish this in my own music, but chances are that tosin does use real polyrhythms, not only odd time, because there is a difference between odd time and polyrhythms lol
too many tosin fans are used to hearing this song from the album and can't open their minds to different possibilities. she did the song justice and made digestible vocal patterns out of what is normally a complex and technical song. It was excellent.
No it simply doesn't fit. The song is clearly meant to be instrumental. This is the equivalent of two people singing two different songs at once. It's just clashing.
Taco Crisma My issue isn't her voice, because it's amazing. My issue isn't even with her vocal phrasing. My issue is with the content of the lyrics. They seemed to ramble and lacked cohesion to a line of thought. What started off aounding like what would happen if King Crimson backed up Billie Holiday quickly decended into an exapmle ofwhat happens when musicians don't listen to each other and improvisation becomes calamity by forcing ideas that don't belong within the context of the song. I just think that they should've come up with a completely new song as opposed to adding a vocal part to an already established song.
for God sake, I'm from Brazil, do u guys, when listen to Baden Powell, Vinicius de Moraes, Tom Jobim, or any other of our musician think in the literally content of the song? I've been watching this for years, through multiple accounts and never once posted a comment. Just wanted to say how much this inspired me at a time where i was completely unmotivated with everything. Like, hearing this just gave me a lot of hope and something to look forward to, which was talented and original music. And, started a really awesome journey into expanding my tastes and showing me that there's more out there in the world. I went from being an angry kid that only listened to metal cause i thought it was the only "heavy" type of music. To now, where i know "heavy" is all about emotion and context. So, thank you Tosin and Kelela. You've made my life much more awesome and gave me hope at a rough time.
Same.. been watching this for so many years, at different points of my life going from ups and downs. I absolutely love the album version but this version has another charm to it. Probably my favourite song off their discography of 3 full length albums now.
So it took me a long, long time to get into the vocals. But now every time I hear this song I can't unhear Kelela's voice on this. If she and Tosin did an album together where she's IN on the writing process and lays down lyrics (none of this T.R.A.M. backing vocal stuff) I'd be all kinds of happy. Also, can we talk about how she just referenced Strange Fruit in a line about GMO? That's insane. And kind of genius.
10 years later, i still come back to listen to this. I wish they made more music together; i love this collab so damn much. So beautiful, rich and soulful 🖤
This is beyond beautiful and actually difficult to some. The beat alone, but to sing to it is challenging. You have to listen very carefully to the chords. This is just beautifully complex and wonderful.
was skeptical at first. i wasn't disappointed though, she has an awesome voice, i would buy this for sure. haha animals as leaders acoustic sessions feat. kelela????? PLS TOSIN
... this guitarist is above the median level ... because even though he was a virtuoso, he does different things with creativity ... unlike most of the virtuosos of today, who are content to play the same way, the same ideas and timbres..Tosin Abasi is different !!!
Okay if Animals As Leaders ever needs a vocalist, hire this singer immediately. She's got one hell of a voice! Hell, if you're not gonna have her sing in your band, I want that voice in mine. :P Genuine respect for her vocal talents!
Daammn Kelelas got soul! I actually really enjoyed it, being a strict instrumentalist. It reminds me of the jazzy rhythms and indie beats Flying Lotus creates. I have a deep respect for jazz being incorporated into the recent progressive movement. Tosin, your sound is just eternally inspiring to me and I feel that nobody has accomplished the merging of jazz and progressive with such finesse as you have. Kelela seems to bring to life some of the underlying elements of jazz in Behaving Badly. She has great musical potential! A request if I may: I think you and Misha could really produce volumes of seriously prodigious music if you collaborated with Flying Lotus. He's a genius and I feel like he would complete the trifecta of progressive prowess. Like 1 genius + 2 geniuses = 1 virtuoso collaboration man! Think of the possibilities!!! Fucking love you guys. Next tour you should hit up Arkansas :D Goarge's Majestic Lounge in Fayetteville would be a show to remember!
I've been wondering when I'd bump into a fellow FlyLo fan on an AAL vid, haha. You're right a colab between them would be amazing. I feel like both've brought much needed style and class to their respective genres.
Man, you just all resume what i was thinking. I used to get high on this, man in the midnight, one of the best experience in my entire life. Try this at home, it causes trippy trips
ABASI IS A MASTER OF HIS ART TRULLY ONE THE BEST 7/8 STRING PLAYERS OF OUR TIME I WOULD NEVER EXPECT ANY LESS OF A COLLABORATION THAN THIS I CANT WAIT TO SEE HIS LATER WORK.
Man, I know AAL is an instrumental project, but hearing this I can't help but imagine how incredible the resulting music would sound if Kelela joined as singer - it's such a perfect fit with Tosin's songwriting and guitar style. At any rate, I'd love to hear another collaboration at some stage
I agree with Owen, a similar but separate project would be best, as Animals As Leaders is a dedicated instrumental band (and much more metal than what Tosin is playing here). That said, it would be outstanding.
I was nervous about what the vocals would be. The thing I love the most about AAS is that it's instrumental, but the moment she started I got goosebumps all over. Great job!
I think this is a good version of that song. I mean, you can see clearly this song wasn't meant to have a vocal line on top of it in first place, but she pretty much catched the vibe and wrote something that fits good, not GREAT, but good. Guys, different is not always bad, it's not like AAL will forbid you to hear the original song from now on...
One of my favorite Animals As Leaders songs and very talented individuals but i have to say i prefer the song being as an instrumental i didn't feel like it all flowed to well together in my opinion.
no man, calm down! i just think it would be interesting for them to have a vocalist just for some songs. and why you have to be so fucking agressive ? just because you are on the internet?
Guilherme Luiz Bettini You're right, it would be awesome. I would love to see a side-project of AAL with a singer like Spencer Sotelo, it would fucking rule!

Hi Tosin Abasi, you play very well. One of the cool things I love about extended Range Guitars is that they're great for Gospel Music, the lower strings make make it easier to transpose because alot of songs will be transposed to fit the ranges of certain singers/musicians.
White metalheads can't fathom that a black woman with soul can't sing over Tosin's (idk if yall knew this but a BLACK MAN)guitar playing lol. She bodied this
She's not really adding to his playing. Like, the vocals and guitar do not acknowledge one another. It's like two sounds being layered unintentionally. that maybe the desired effect but i didn't get that impression. Gotta love my man tosin though.
Jason Guerrero I agree with Jason 100% ... Im kind of annoyed this version exists, i would love it if there was no vocals and it was just Tosin sitting down facing the camera playing it solo, hes such a bad ass!
I have to say I agree with you as well, as good as her vocals are, even if you didn't know it was the case you'd be able to tell that they were added after everything else had been written - they don't complement each other enough. Having said that, I do think this version is very pleasant to listen to, mostly because it's just something a bit different and she's still a good singer. Also Tosin's playing is, as usual, flawless.
Yes it does. He's doing lots of Arpeggios and she is singing melodies along with it. I should know because I'm a musician, music major and engineer. But that's neither hear nor there. (seeing that you think that's what validates an opinion). I do have a degree in Music Education
