- Today I’m speaking with @CoreyGilShusterAskProject from “The Ask Project”, otherwise known as the “Ask an Israeli” / “Ask a Palestinian Project".
Corey asks viewer submitted questions to people across both Israel and Palestine, with topics ranging from food to religion. Corey’s work is among the best, and sadly the few, to be consistently documenting and sharing what real people think and feel, helping to educate those on both sides of the conflict about one another, as well as others elsewhere in the world.
As we discuss in our conversation, and is obvious to anyone who has studied or experienced this issue at any level, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is truly one of the most complex, tragic, and ceaseless geopolitical catastrophes in modern history. Corey’s work provides rare and much needed insight into the lives and perspectives of the people who have lived through the conflict.
Corey is an absolute legend. His own positions rarely come across in his interviews, but his humanity always does.
I disagree. His pushback towards palestinians are always personal, and when he pushes back against Israelis its "thats what people say"

he definitely has an Israeli bias, but man he has a lot of important work, really insightful and quite nice to see.
@@xoxjohanna pushing back as like in being against Jews getting thrown into the sea or pushing back as in men and women should be equal in society? Yeah, reflect on what he's pushing back against. It's not about being Israeli, it's about being decent

Seeing Corey at the other end of an interview is fascinating! His work is extremely valuable in educating not only those who live in the conflict itself, but more so for those who don't live there but have always wondered why they are neighbors and never find solutions to their conflict to prevent violence. Jews and Palestinians really do find each other everywhere we go. My best friend from my hometown in the United States is Palestinian. It’s funny how easily we can seem to get along on equal ground.
In the United States your forced to since halal and kosher are rare lol and everyone around you eats non halal and non kosher stuff.
Great interview, I had no idea about several things mentioned here. If a part 2 is made, please share even more examples from both yours and Corey's interactions with people there.
Asking questions is a natural critical thoughts generator about common beliefs: Corey seems to be doing good progress in that field. Thanks for sharing and keep up

To keep the podcast format, interviewing yourself could be a way: first encountered this on _New Thinking Allowed_ *InPresence* series where harder/harsher/poking questions are raised sometimes with hilarious comebacks than those possible in a regular interview. Corey made more usefull and effective work for the understanding of both states then any other human rights agency.

It really was, and so perfectly highlights the nature of the conflict. There are sadly countless examples going both directions. The silver lining is that it highlights that there are people who are happy to help each other regardless of the situation, and to me suggests that the solution will be found in empowering those people until concessions can be made with grace and empathy. Seeing his face in a long-form interview is so weird. I only ever think of him as the guy behind the camera, even though I'd seen his face before.
The Abraham records is positive for Israel, not for Palestine. Its all about arm deals and normalizing Israel.

I think its very important to teach english to both sides, cause israelis are reluctant to learn Arabic and muslims are reluctant to learn hebrew because of biases. And of course communication is key! Besides, it allows you to learn from points of view all around the world, which again, communication is the way forward in my opinion.
Where I live in America, we have a Kosher deli with a couple of Palestinian employees.

You didnt mention once the occupation in the west bank or the Nakba, you didnt even deny it it wasnt acknowledged. As a Palestinian-Syrian subscriber i was a bit dissapointed but appreciate your work.
Hey @hishamalaker491, I really appreciate your comment. Rightly so, this topic is sensitive and contentious, so receiving critical feedback that's both kind and constructive is highly appreciated. In fact, your comment and several others have led me to believe it's worthy of a solo video speaking on this in more detail, so I'll save my detailed response for that. But let me be clear: my criticisms extend to Israel, and above all else, I condemn the settlements in the West Bank, among many other things the Israeli government is responsible for. More on this soon, and again, thank you.

Corey's work is amazing and so interesting. but it seems that his responses here are more or less pessimistic about the will of palestinians for peace. they are not interested to his work. it's sad...

Great discussion. His comment at 18:30 just struck me as odd that a left wing thinks we should all get along and make it work. Whereas a right wing is more realistic. I feel that any side should want to make it work, but of course we should not be naive at the same time...
I've just come from a Rabbi's YT channel where it's definitely the case they are paranoid, just as much as the muslim channels.
There’s definitely paranoia on both sides. Though, I would say the nature of the paranoia is quite different between them. How do you view it?
@@wisertomorrowpodcast Well, muslim wise the 2 channels I have been subbed to for a couple of years never reply, for one.
And more recently, since Oct 7 they all agree that there is some skullduggery going on against them. One is outraged at a recent banning by a European country of
face coverings iirc but no such outrage or mention of Oct 7.
(Of course there is with the trad far right, always has, so I'll give them that)

I've followed him for a long time and i love his videos, but he's too biased
After hearing about Hitler/Nazis torturing Jews, I became really furious, sad, and sympathized with them. I simply not comprehend why they were willing to torture, imprison, and murder so many Jews. The Jews were indeed exterminated. This racial hate was considered unreasonable at the time.
I now understand what happened in Palestine when Jews were in control. Indeed, there is a significant problem with Judaism's teachings and beliefs, particularly the concept that Jews are the chosen people. As long as Jews embrace this concept, the planet will undoubtedly be destroyed.
this sounds like a "blame Palestinians" kind of conversation. like the occupation is their fault, they're not allowed to be angry at being dominated by Israel

@@rallen0414 to be fair, I'd be angry too if someone came, stole my land, and forced me to live under an apartheid system.
They take their anger out on the wrong people. The kibbutzim attacked on October 7 were some of the most left-wing, pro-Palestinian Israelis in the country, and it was in internationally-recognised Israeli territory, not the occupied territories so not Palestinian land. Their true enemies are the extremist settlers and the fascist government, but instead they target innocent civilians in their "resistance", which is terrorism - civilians should never be targeted (on either side).

He seems quite moderate and human but at the same time I feel like he holds Palestinians more accountable for the ongoing conflict and that disappoints me. The occupier has to be the proactive side in developing peace with the subjugated occupied population. The side that’s in power is the one that has to be held to a higher level of accountability even if the oppressed ones are reluctant and vengeful. I just hoped he was less biased but I guess he does have to side with his own people at the end of the day.
Well it is quite hard to make peace with someone who wants to kill you. From the very beginning in 1947, who started all the wars? The arabs. And the israelis always beat them. If it was the other way around, I can imagine what the arabs would have done to the jews.
Btw you can watch his videos: israelis give more diverse opinions about the whole issue, but the majority are for living in peace (eg not having to deal with terrorist attacks and rockets) meanwhile ca 90% of palestinians say they want to expell (or kill) all the jews and take all the land. And I am saying this by positioning myself in the middle with a slight leaning towards palestinians (which obviously is hard to believe after what I have written).
Also I havent lived there and I am no jew or arab, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
They are more accountable because they do not accept the existence of the other side. Pretty simple

I think the main reason why only a Jew should be able to be Prime Minister is for the same reason the need was felt to create a Jewish state in the first place. #Neveragain.

This issue will never be resolved as long as people keep calling it a "conflict" it's not a conflict it's a decades long military occupation, so let's start there.
The occupation didnt happen out of nowhere. It's the result of Palestinians behavior and the need to secure Israel from terrorism

Your simply lying, until the Arabs attacked in 1947, after denying the plan, Jews didn't a kick a single Arab out of their home, they either bought land, and mostly settled in empty spaces, where no Arabs lived at all, Jews were the minority, but there's no reason they can't settle in empty spaces where there is no country there, and especially during the Holocaust

The discussion is a useful display of hypocrisy and willful blindness. The Palestinian historical narrative is completely missing, the experience of ethnic cleansing, exile, and military rule is deleted, and then Palestinians are quite unfairly described as being motivated by ingrained Jew hatred, even though the “interviews” that Shuster posts rarely, if ever, support that false assumption. In fact, the “interviews” with Palestinians are quite one-sided, they are mostly monologues with Shuster giving his views, his interpretations of Palestinian comments or of the environment around him. In the end, it’s hasbara, propaganda

You clearly never watched his videos. He pushes people to justify their opinions and he does it on both sides. That's what journalists are supposed to do. The ethnic cleansing and suffering has been on both sides. You're just another one of these "experts" Corey is talking about who has no clue whatsoever about reality.
@@trollnerd actually I have watched several of his videos, and that is the source of my criticism. Corey is not a journalist. He substitutes his interpretation and historical views for the Palestinian voice, and he does it repeatedly. He doesn’t ask Palestinians to speak at length or go in depth about a topic or question, he doesn’t ask Palestinians to narrate the significance of their surroundings, he just tells the viewer his “interpretation” (a very standard Israeli Jewish point of view) as he is walking around in Palestinian cities. The end result doesn’t tell the viewer much about what Palestinian’s think about a topic or how they view their history, instead his videos tell me what a somewhat liberal Israeli thinks about Palestinians. It’s a bit of a bait and switch. The sad part is that it is unnecessary - there are Palestinians who speak English - he could invite them on camera to narrate, but he doesn’t want to, because then Corey would lose control of their narrative.
I stopped watching because I found it irritating - my final straw was his visit to Ramallah and whole video clip was this long and boring description of crappy fast food restaurants that he was visiting in the city, as if that had any importance.
@@basilkiwan8922 I genuinely cannot understand how that was your takeaway from his videos. Most of the time corey doesn't say anything at all, he may ask a follow up question or two but mostly he just let's people answer. He doesnt narrativize at all. The reason I think he avoids english speaking Palestinians is that they tend to be less "salt of the earth" if you know what I mean. Hes looking for the opinion of the common person. However he does occasionally interview educated people.
@@trollnerd I think it is fine that he asks questions, whatever they may be, but when he doesn’t provide a Palestinian context for that answer, it’s morally questionable - it becomes more of a “gotcha” moment. Corey goes beyond that though, he provides a liberal Israeli Zionist perspective or context to frame the Q&A sessions he has with Palestinians, which is more than a little unfair. If he said less, gave less commentary, that would probably improve things somewhat. But there is a limit, he isn’t in a “neutral” position (if such a thing exists) to pull this off. The better alternative is to actually give Palestinians a voice when he is going to interview them - maybe he could find a Palestinian co-moderator who can give context better than Corey could.
