  • What's up everyone? Welcome back to another Appletree Surfboards tech talk video. Today we are going to answer a question from one of you guys.. Should I kite surf with a leash?
We can be very short and clear about that. Basically no!
    00:25 Why shouldn't I kite surf with a leash?
00:47 But what if I lose my board?
01:13 But why the leash plugs on an Appletree surf board?
01:58 Wait.. there are some exceptions
That was it. Hope to see you next time in another tech talk video. Let us know in the comments down below what you think, what's your opinion about using a leash while kitesurfing? Do you kite surf with a leash and why? We can have a vivid discussion there.
We hope to see you later in the next tech talk video and don't forget to check out our channel to see more tech talk videos. Thanks, cheers!

I come from a surfing background and I used a leash for a while, then I had a crazy experience in Cape Town kiting some overhead waves, wiped out after a big top turn and my board got washed over my lines, kite still in the air, leash wrapped around my control bar and death looped my kite, slinging the board along with me as I went flying through the air! Luckily the kite crash and I was able to removed the leash from the lines. Never again, I'll bodydrag thank you very much

I've been kitesurfing on a surf board for 10+ years and always use a leash BUT I also always wear a helmet.
I kite where I live in Cornwall (SW of the UK / England) on beach breaks where I generally kitesurf on my wave board in cross-on shore conditions and waves that are often well over head high. In these conditions, being able to quickly get your board back, back on it and riding before the next set is, for me, far better than having to body drag (often) a long way back to the beach to re-start. That can involve taking some big waves on the head.
Additionally, if it all goes wrong and the kite gets abandoned, I have the board to body surf back to the shore or as a floatation device if behind the breaking waves.
When I kitesurf hydrofoil, also in waves, but generally not on the bigger days, I don't wear a leash (but I still were my helmet) and yes, I've had a couple of long body drags back to the beach. But in general, if I fall off the board and it gets grabbed by the waves, the foil doesn't go all the way back in, so I can get it, and quickly carry on with the session.

Totally agree but I would add as well as the rocky reef/point breaks I will occasionally use a leash if there are other surfers in the line up or even swimmers on the inside....to stop my board taking any of these people out.

never uswed a leash before! until... strong offshore wind and decent waves.every time you lose the board means: it gets washed to the (sandy) beach, so no trouble here. but in offshore wind bodydragging upwind means landing 1km further down the beach 20 min later. a leash saves time. and being aware of the leash makes everything (much more) safe and easy. no issues. and tacking with a leash means some stepping over it after that, bt, as said, a matter ot 20 min to accommodate.

What if you use the Oceanus Reel Leash?
Is it saver or not at all?

We are not fans of these for surfing, the thin rope can wrap around your feet and cause more trouble than it does good. It's usually so easy to get back to your board.
