Tech Talk: The ideal board weight ratio
What's up everyone? Welcome back to another Appletree Surfboards Tech Talk. Today we're going to have a bit of a technical one because we're going to talk about board weight again.
What determines board weight?
In general, when you're making a board, the final weight of the board is determined by three factors:
One is the fiberglass or the carbon fiber that's around the board, so your fiber matrix.
Then the second one is your resin, in our case, pure epoxy resin and the amount that you use.
Finally, there's of course the foam weight.
These three factors determine how heavy and also how strong your boards are. In our construction that we've explained a couple of times, we're using this vacuum...

    Yes, my Appletree Jazz 62 might be a little bit heavier than other comparable sizes from some other brands. But honestly, I just LOVE the way it feels under foot. In regard to my 50L Slice V3 and 37L Pro Foil V2, at that size, they just feel super light regardless so I never even gave weight a second thought on those. When try other boards from other brands it often takes me a while to get adjusted because they just don't feel as responsive.

    Great Video, but I still need your advice please. I am 85kg, good rider, mostly winging on lakes at 10-20 knots. I currently have a 100l freestyle board which has 72cm width and makes tight curving difficult.... I want to change to a longer and narrow shape like the Slice V3. Now before watching your video I was considering 80l. Now I tend to 90l. Opinions appreciated 👍

      Hi! thanks! Both sizes will work fine for you, but 10 knots is rather low, so if you have a lot of low wind days, go for the bigger size. the longer narrower shape will really help with getting up in lower wind conditions!

    Having a leash is exposing you statistically to get a bad return of the board, one day or another. Happened to me a long time ago (something like 20 years ago). I wore an helmet, and was able to show the dent in it from a fin, on the rear of what would have been my skull. You’re in a situation where you could lose your board? Be prepared for it. Cell phone number written on your board. Practice bodydragging until it is just natural.

    I love that you build with XPS foam, they are very reliable unlike the water absorbing EPS cored ones. I would really like to see: - XPS blanks CNC hollowed. -Less hotcoating. -Engineered foilboxes, no PVC blocks but carbon tracks connected to deck and bottom lam with carbon tubes. -Carbon+Innegra skin for impact. If i can DIY a 5.9 x 17 x 75ltr XPS wingfoil board at 4.1kg with pad and (metric) strap inserts then the industry should too. IMHO 1 kg, even 0.5kg makes a board dreamy to ride or a boring lead sled.

    • @appletreesurfboards
      @appletreesurfboards 16 дней назад

      thanks! the problem with hollowing out is that we can't pull in vacuum anymore, as it will collapse. So unfortunately we have to keep it solid. contantly trying to get the weight down, however there is a limit if you want to keep it strong!

On flat water + Foil Drive Max: Stock Apple Skipper Prone - 4'6'' (34L) -> I can make it work all the way to a Spitfire 960 or an ART Pro 1121 (skinny 365 rear) / Appletree Majek - C@$H - Cash 4'3'' - 31L: I can make a Spitfire 1030 to work (or above). On the ocean, with a 1 foot bump: I can make any wing to work, on both Appletree boards, even a Spitfire 840 or smaller. Let me know if you have any questions. I really like your video! It gave me a lot of points to think about. I am riding mainly on the open ocean with wind above 15kts (tarifa). When you talk about „avoid your weight in volume“, what is the magic difference? I am around 80kg (with wetsuits and all the equipment probably around 85kg+. So that would mean i have to avoid everything around 70l to 90l. At the moment i have a 110l board which feels too big. On the other hand i don’t want to go for a sinker as i don’t have the level yet. Before this video i thought my next board will be around 85l to 90l. But now i am not sure if this is a good choice for me.

      Hi! good question. For us the volume to avaoid is your weight till aabout 20-25% below that. So in your case, you could go as low as 80-85L that will just about float you and should be easy to ride. just avoid the 65-80 range.

    Thanks for video. I guess I like straps because I have windsurf background? I cant see the big benefit of strapless, but I hear its something about the feeling? Everything else is more difficult without straps? Maybee gybing is easier strapless? However, in small and easy waves I can se the fun in making things harder and dial in accurate skills. Anyway, with straps I step around a lot and get nearly the same freedom, the backfoot is only in the strap when surfing or jumping over big waves, which is such a fantastic possibility with wavekiting. This really differs from windsurfing in waves. Its so easy to jump those difficult ones, and I would never take off the straps for making that more challenging. Am I the only who asks a big "Why"? Strapless is even becoming a synonym with surfboard. Like strapped strapless is the right term for my strapped directional :)

    • @appletreesurfboards
      @appletreesurfboards Месяц назад

      There are no wrong answers here! I personally really like the freedom it gives,a nd I move much more than just the backfoot :) But I come from a normal surfing background, so that might have something to do with it.

      @@appletreesurfboards Agree. Everything depends on the conditions. Where I surf chop and gusts are the norm. I see the strapless riders struggle in those conditions. No jumps, falls off the board etc. It looks very hard, and thats why I wonder why not straps and more possibilities? It is easier in challenging conditions and allow intermediates , like most of us are, to jump and rotate and all that. Especially the trend with strapless freestyle is near being mean to those weekend warriors. I guess it will be a lot of these boards cheep second hand soon, when people give up and return to twin tip. Just my opinions....

      @@appletreesurfboards one more question: At 3:05 you explain the front foot position. Why isnt the inserts more forward in the board if the front foot should be more forward? @@halvortorgersen8741 we still have much nore demand for strapless boards, so I don't htink that will happen. Also, some boards are clearly better for strapless than strapped. wider tails for instance like on the Malus domestica, are not so nice with straps. Hi! My weight is 80 kg. I switched my Slice V2 83 liter for same board in 70 liter. Dispite of the recommendation to stay away from volum equal to weight, I found the 83 liter much easier to get going. With the 70 liter I struggle with pitch stability during water start when on my knees. I feel I spend a lot of energy before on foil. I am now considering the V3. Mainly surfing open ocean and far from beach (around offshore islands). What volume would you recommend to ease water starting? Thanks!

    • @appletreesurfboards
      @appletreesurfboards Месяц назад

      hi, This is very personal, but at 80KG 70L is a bit too much to fully sink the board, thus making it hard to control under water. If you go sinker, go full sinker! The v3 had beeter low end, so it should be easier to get going. go for 80L is you want the security to always get going, and go for 60L if you are after a "higher wind sinker"

      Hi, we don;t advise to do ( a lot of) strapped tricks on any surfboard. All our boards can handle quite a bit of abuse, but at the same weight of a twintip setup, but with lots more volume, you can never expect the same strength. so over time, a twintip will last, and a surfboard will wear out, even ours. If you want, we can add inserts to any model we make, as a custom option, but advise to use it for security in bigger surf, and not for constant jumping. Thanks!

    What is considered a small board and a small foil and what kind of smaller foil compared to the rider's weight?

    • @appletreesurfboards
      @appletreesurfboards 2 месяца назад

      I would consider a board that is 15-20L lower than your weight small. (sinker) As for the foil, that is a bit dependant on the rider. but for and average 75KG I would say over 1000cm is medium size, over 1300 is big and anything under 1000 you are going into the "small" range.

    Great video lm a beginner wing foiler learning on fresh water in a reservoir should l change my board first or my foil?

      it depends, a smaller foil will make you go faster and be more maneuverable, but it's sometimes hard to ride a very small foil on a big board. So maybe board first. Also riding a small board on a small foil is much harder than a small board on a large foil.

    Great video as usual. I think it’s important to contextualize the basis. I was riding a very large foil (2200) with a large board (120L), the kit that I learned to wing foil. I first reduced the size of the foil and it was a game changer to improve my riding and jibes. Now ready to reduce the size of the board. But again this is an extreme example of reducing the initial quiver

      Good point! We will keep maing this type of videos as the sport evolves, and I will take that into account when making the next one.

    Thanks for the insight on which to size down. It never hurts to expand ones quiver (except in the wallet, that part hurts.)

    One point you didn’t address is the benefit of a larger board when winging in remote areas offshore when the wind dies. Slogging in on one’s knees is more viable (at least for me) than prone paddling long distances. Love my Appleslice v2 at 70 liters for my 72 kg pre wetsuit.

      goog point. soo much to consider, too much for a short vid like this. I am sure that these size/volume discussions will keep evolving and we will keep making new videos as we gain new insights!
