  • When I started playing the mandolin in 1996 it was entirely because of a longhaired California hippie named David Grisman. I had heard The David Grisman Quintet’s debut album from 1977 during my freshman year at Virginia Tech and it forever changed my life. That was my first exposure to Grisman’s self-styled “Dawg music”, an eclectic blend of bluegrass, gypsy jazz and traditional Jewish music, and I was totally hooked from day one.
Fast forward to recent years; it's been a longstanding fantasy of mine to cover a beautiful song from that album called “Ricochet.” The tune was a collaboration between Grisman and Richard Somers and featured intricate three part mandolin harmonies. Up til recently something like that seemed out of reach, but what better time to tackle lofty musical goals than a global pandemic? So I ran the idea by my buddy Brandon Davis, one of the best flatpickers I know, and he was instantly on board. We quickly enlisted the able assistance of friends Carter Gravatt and Chris Burcher on mandolins and rounded out the quintet with Tod Ellsworth, a ferocious bass player here in Richmond.
This was by far the most ambitious Quarantine Duet we’ve attempted to date, and I’m really proud of how it turned out. Brandon, Carter, Chris and Tod worked their butts off learning a very difficult piece for nothing more than the love of music and fellowship. That’s truly amazing and I owe them many thanks for their dedication! These guys are all incredible musicians with their own respective projects and bands, so please support them. And if you’ve never heard David Grisman before, please check him out. His catalog is a rabbit hole you won’t regret exploring.
As we now find ourselves in the 7th month of this weird alternate reality called COVID-19, sadly most musicians are still not able to play live on a regular basis. But real musicians simply have to play, so we will keep finding new ways to make music. That’s what this series is all about. Stay tuned for more.
    Much love, Willie

Dick Somers woud be proud! It's ironic that HIS composition is probably my favorite piece Grismon recorded! I lived in La Honda and worked with Dick in Redwood City when he wrote the piece and pitched it to David. Too bad Dick kinda disappeared. He was a great guitarist and mandolin player!

Very cool man, and thank you for the kind words. I wish more people had seen this video, as it was one of my favorite things on my channel. We really had a lot of fun doing this project.
