The Berin Aerotrain was a hovertrain which was trialled in France. Having no contact with the "track" it had to be driven by an aircraft propellor. The appalling amount of noise it made was one of the reasons it never progressed beyond experiments.
Can you imagine? Jeez i mean i think its crazy enough that we put 16 year olds behind the wheel of a multi ton piece of speeding steel and plastic even though their frontal lobe ( thats reasoning skills) isnt fully developed. But on the other hand we got to get those young people to work to line the pockets of the CEOs. Greed lines the box of humanities coffin.

I definitely encourage your viewers to visit the U.S. Army Transportation museum at Ft Eustis (now joint base Langley-Eustis). Many vehicle prototypes there and definitely a fun time. Not sure if they still have it but at one time they also had the Avro Car or Army Equivalent of a flying saucer 😮 using much the same concept as the air car here, except it was disc shaped and was also supposed to be able to transition to high altitude flight! Great content as usual. 👍
A hovercraft that can only reach a speed of 38 miles per hour will be completely unable to move forward when facing a 38-mile-per-hour headwind. It is also highly vulnerable to crosswinds, making it extremely difficult to drive straight on the road on windy days. In the first place, this machine would likely be incapable of climbing San Francisco's steep hills, and I doubt it could even stop at a traffic light on a downhill slope.💦
- Make it hover so there are less friction - Hard to turn? Build a dedicated "encasing" track so that they need no worry about turning anymore - Pair them a lot so that it can transport a lot at once - ??? - Profit
Britain and France both tried making hovertrains, but it was never practical. They were horribly noisy (see Bertin Aerotrain) and, unlike a regular train where the cars are supported on wheels, if there really were multiple cars every single one had to be powered to supply the lift engines.
Flying cars are bad idea You'd have to get a pilot's license to use one Unless they're VTOL, you'd need a runway You'd have to do so many more before trip checks and procedures If it is VTOL, you'd might as well have a helicopter
Every time I hear the Question "what happened to flying cars?" I have to think of this IBM commercial with Avery Brooks. 😂😂 "Where are the flying cars. I was promised flying cars"
I love how funky the engineers in the 50s and 60s were. They just did random things cause “wouldn’t it be cool if we did this?” and then did it. Sometimes successful, often death traps, and countless abject failures, but all weird interesting and cool ideas.
As Neil deGrasse Tyson once said: those machines just "beat the air to submission". The only smart flying mahines are airplanes that are equiped with NACA airfoil - aka wings. Those convert forward motion to lift. Much smarter. much more efficient
"so why did we never get an air car?" "you have to understand where the build was financially...." No, no you don't. It has nothing to do with Curtis-Wright, it has to do with the fact that the whole thing is worse than a car in basically every way. Perhaps somewhat viable as a military Jeep replacement (35mph isn't that much slower than the top speed of a WWII Jeep), but it was never going to replace a personal car.
I see talk about noise and drivability, but imagine the fuel consumption on that thing. It would put any muscle car to shame. imagine driving to work an needing to fuel up half way every time.
Taking a turn is easy: Put the front of your car halfway into the lane next to you, and the back halfway into the other lane next to you. 😂 More realistically, you'd want computer control over vanes that can control lateral movement, and I doubt computers were capable enough to handle that kind of thing back then. Also one thing I noticed is that you'd basically have no trunk on the car, since it needed engines and fans in both the front and back.
Hey there! its completely valid to be spoiled by an advert, especially the same one you have seen a million times. However, I don't actually choose the adverts for the video thats on RUclips, and the sponsored content is only there to pay for the animations and the team that the work does. You are more than welcome to become a patreon, or get RUclips premium to avoid the content. If you don't want to pay by watching, or by sponsoring content that you enjoy then you are welcome to watch TV instead or sell your data to Facebook. Which, you will find doesn't have 15 second skippable adverts. So I think honestly this is the best situation you can get. But again, sorry I wasn't able to work for free for a week and eat nothing.

So what is wrong with being or looking like a janitor?
Hovercrafting and cornering are natural enemies

Oh those can drift very well
In a straight line 😂
@@9an13l I think it was more like a hoverboard with set track and set path to hover on!?

We've got earbuds now. This would have been the perfect video for a raycon advert
Imagine trying to stop short in that

It looks like a GPU made to look like a car lmao
Hahaha! Super comment buddy!
It really does. The hotwheels GPU lol
not a bad idea for a colin furze youtube video
I *love* your renderings, dude.
That absurdly boxy, yet, still perfectly smooth and round at the edges is so aesthetically pleasing to me.
The design of this hovercar really wants me to take a hard right on Saratoga with it.
Dang that reference goes hard!! 😂
Looks like a video card with a convertible top. Crazy.
So you're saying buy Nvidia?
Holy landspeeder, Batman! 😂
Any time that thing goes into a curve, it plays 'Deja vu' , when you start drifting.
If we allow Karen to fly over our homes in 10,000 lb cruise missiles, we're finished 😂

8:55 - Those ears could hear Stalin farting while sitting in Washington.
being able to lift 1,000 lbs of of weight is pretty respectable honestly, for a hover car made in the 1960s anyway.
Sounds like something from fallout

The Avrocar was one of the most magnificent failures in aircraft history. It was actually slower than Jeep, and couldn't fly much higher either!
Saw it there years ago. Fascinating!

4:40 Christine?!

I never saw the hovercraft as a thing from the future, but rather a boat that can be driven on land as well as in the water
That car will kill so many people in the city because it can't brake fast enough.
I tried to search what's the anatomy inside but found nothing.
Wonderful video, as always! 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!

right?!! as i was making it i was like there is no way someone will make that connection

Nope, no good, I know too many drivers. Take their behavior and add a lack of friction and needing to steer way ahead of the car? Nothing doing.
