  • Magnetic bit holders, whether as inserts or bit drivers, the strength of the magnetic varies considerably. But even more, there seems to be some secondary retention beyond the magnet that significantly increases the bit retention. Here's my test.

Did you text the Klein electricians finger hole bit ratchet? I'd like to know how it did! I have to use Pliers to get the bits out of mine. Just wondering. 🔨👍😁👍🔧

I'm still playing with it. The honeymoon is over however. What I thought was a good idea to be able to apply finger or thumb pressure in line with the bit turns out to be a problem. And I'm constantly bumping the direction switch.

Hey Doc. This is off topic, but I suspect you may have some good thoughts on gloves. From gloves for shoveling snow in 20F (I wonder why I'm asking!?), to shop gloves. I'm asking... thanks

I won't make jokes about 20 degrees is balmy and who needs gloves,....
My go to right now is a pair of Carhart insulated leather work gloves. They are pretty cheap, dry out over night, and that way I don't ruin a high-end pair of ski gloves. The synthetic shells of waterproof gloves don't hold up well to repetitive work. And you don't shovel show in the rain so when below freezing, waterproofness is not much of an issue. The Carhartts are not the warmest so wear a hat, but I get several years out of a pair even with regular use. Something like this:
      www.carhartt.com/products/carhartt-accessories-gloves/Insulated-Grain-Leather-Work-Glove--Safety-Cuff--A513
Gloves are not all that warm so wear a hat. If you need more insulation, go to a work mitten, or use a thin wool liner glove inside the main glove. Also, for snow, the gauntleted gloves (loversized cuff) work very well as both a shield and a shovel. As long as the snow comes from the finger side, you are fine, but anything from the elbow side enters the glove. And most gauntlets won't fit under a coat sleeve.
And for just shoveling snow, the right and left don't have to match so you can hit up a lost and found and make a pair. I often have specific outerwear dedicated to tasks like lugging firewood, shoveling snow, and crawling around under a vehicle.

@@lastbesttool Thanks! I'll definitely check out the Carhartt gloves. I am able to type, BTW, because i used he gas stove-flame to warm my hands! I think gloves would make for good video(s)

Is that snap on ratchet driver a custom one? I been seeing some custom snap on stuff appear on ebay more often.

Hi Doug. The green handled ratchet with brown highlights is a Snap On, but some special version. I got it for a buck at a pawnshop. There was no brand on it anywhere. Just a lamda symbol on the shaft that I assumed was a date code. It was like new and I was convinced it was a Snap On, and the bit pocket in the handle was filled with Snap On branded bits. The pawnshop would have charged $40 if it said Snap On on it, but since it didn't it was barely worth a buck to them. I took it to my Snap On dealer and he inspected it closely and said it was indeed a Snap On, possibly a military issue, or maybe a corporate promotion of some sort. But yet, it was a Snap On with all the rights and privileges that come with any other Snap On ratcheting screwdriver. I took it apart and compared the guts. Identical with a branded Snap On. I also tested the magnetic strength of the other ratcheting Snap On screwdrivers with the interchangeable shafts but forgot to mention it specifically. But the Snap On shaft was identified early in the video as just one of the Snap On bit holders.

@@johnb1121 I don't yet have a Vessel to compare my Weras to but that will change in the future. On looks alone, I like the shape of the Wera and that it has more variety of gripping angles. But only a head to head test will tell.
