When I go to vintage stores and see people balk at the prices it always annoys me because I know that most vintage sellers are doing it out of a passion for vintage fashion and not to make a killing. Even if they GAVE you the stock you still have thousands of dollars tied up in it, as well as all your time and so much energy. If you paid yourself and your family what you paid your helpers, how much would it be then? My guess in the tens of thousands and that isn't even figuring in paying the good folks in SC for the lot. Watching these videos has been therapeutic for me because my parents were hoarders and some day I'm going to have to deal with their "estate" and I will need to remind myself how much work and money it is to try to make saleable all of the vintage items that are there. I have harbored the fantasy of putting it in a truck and bringing it back home and selling the items on etsy or whatever but your experience will serve as a reminder that it won't be easy or cheap.
I finally admitted I'd never get round to covering an old chaise longue, and gave it away. 42 people on Facebook wanted it, but I gave it to the one who said he was learning upholstery, and would send me photos of his work. Knowing something will go to a good home, and be loved and used as it should be, made me feel less bad about not doing it myself.
As a business coach I approve of the profit potential! 👏 😂 As a sewist I wish you and this haul were in the UK so I could buy without it being a fortune for shipping.. 😜
I helped my parents move a few years ago on a 48 hour truck hire. The fact the the Canada's did this all in 36 hours is a truly gargantuan effort. It also brings back all the stress I felt when I did it.
I recomend trying pods if you ever try this again and it's available where you need it. I'm not sure how comparable the price is but it would have taken the stress out of having to move a big truck yourself. You still get the benefit of loading the truck yourself on your own time, not having to share truck space with anyone else and they can recommend professional moving services to help if you need it.
the cost for the estate was way less expensive than I expected you to say. You'll definitely be able to make that back I'm also looking forward to when you list all that trim. Vintage trim is one of my faves
Did you know there is also the option to rent portable storage/packing containers? In my neighborhood, I sometimes see these big square metal containers sitting for a while on a driveway. People pack at their comfort level. Containers sit on the concrete, so you just walk in and out, no ramping. When packing is done, someone picks it up and delivers it to wherever. Personally, I wouldn't want to rent a truck of any size. When I was a student who had to move frequently, I learned that they were *always* in scary mechanical condition. So I really prefer the option of someone else doing the shipping after I do the packing and decision making. This would obviate the anxiety of getting the right size truck, because it is simple to have another container sent over for you. Finally, when it is at your destination, you unpack at your comfort level. I have no idea how the rentals would cost compare. You'd be moving yourself there and back home in you own good gas mileage vehicle, so at least gas would be better. Your sanity is what's priceless. You took on a massive project and did an amazing job in a short time. I'm awed. I know I would have needed extra time -- just to stay calm, let alone to do the project.
Um...just because you don't like a fabric doesn't mean it needs to go to the dump. There are ways to use fabric like that. For one thing, you can make rag rugs as they don't show the pattern. You can line something. You can use it to stuff other items. And, donate it to a thrift store if you have to. I promise they will appreciate it and someone will buy the fabric.
Once we had something really bad happen and my husband was watching me tell our friends. All he had to say was she's going to get some good stories out of this. So things went wrong for you but you got a good story/video out of it so it was a complete success!
I just LOVE it! This is a real stroll down memory lane. I used to make EVERYTHING I would wear. When I saw the haul, my face got tingly--I think it was "sensory overload"!! Keep on, keepin' on!
I actually really enjoyed this. And I am typically not a fan of self-deprecating content. You have the perfect channel for “what I got wrong” informative videos! 😂😂😂
On the upside, the fact that you could accomplish all that physical and mental labor under stress, shows you are pretty darned healthy. When I moved house (never again) I was so exhausted that mid-way through the delivery end, I more or less collapsed on the living room floor. It took me days to recover. So, congrats and good luck with selling it off.
I just discovered you, and as a professional dressmaker, mostly retired now, and the daughter of a seamstress, I was quite entertained by your estate haul videos. I find myself frequently laughing out loud at your comments and songs! I once went to an auction of fabrics and made a nice little haul myself. I used most of the mostly bridal laces for customers of my brick and mortar bridal shop, but actually still have some pieces left 30 years later. I am trying to sell off so much of the patterns, trims, buttons, and have not even begun with the fabrics yet. I wish you the best with all that still lies ahead for you.
May your ROI be as fulfilling as the amount of dopamine you get from discovering all those marvelous treasures. I dream of finding something like this estate (I’ve found similar on a nano-scale) and being able to share the vintage love!
I think the bigger storage unit is great as opposed to "oh, that bolt is somewheeeeeerree behind this other stack..." - also, if it makes you feel any better, gas here is at least 1$ gallon more at the cheapest station.
As the saying goes "Live and Learn". But man that was a costly lesson. I hope by the time you have gotten through all of that mess you were at least able to make up for most of what you had to spend.
IDK if you know about this- Gas buddy! It shows you all the gas prices. I commend you on being able to do it in 36 hours. Even if you made errors, you still kicked ass!
Do you set up a processing center in that big storage unit. It is going to save you. It will also make the expense of that big space not hurt so bad. Get shelves and get a big long table or two and life will be better. I am so excited to see all the cool stuff that comes out of that you share with us.
Holy poopers, that's allot for storage. You need a call-out for a bunch of nearby middle-aged women who are willing to work at intern rates (aka, free) to descend upon your house for a weekend. Or they could work for a free bolt of fabric and a free bolt of lace??? Cause that's a whole bunch of hours to sort everything before you get to do the upload, sales and shipping... In the meantime, I have to move some stuff around in preparation for a lace drop. Cheers. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
honestly - you're our hero. your going and getting that haul is our dream - and we wouldve 1000% made same mistakes - or worse. that said - what a TReasure trove of fun........come build a satellite shop in AU cheers from down under
YES! I actually HAD been wondering how this worked out. :) I caught I think the second video in the series when you posted it, and it caught my attention because I had done something similar. I own a quilt shop, and wound up buying the inventory of two other shops that closed. (over two different years, different circumstances each time, long stories, but still..) All that to say, great advice up above. It's always going to be an adventure. For anyone else having to clear out a lot like this - identify the trash and dispose as quickly as possible. (why pay to store garbage?) and make a pile of things you can sell quickly and preferably in bulk for whatever you can get. This helps with the overwhelm and starts to recoup a bit of the cost. p.s - LOVE your channel.
You are amazing and I find myself smiling 'til it hurts while watching your video. The SM in you is strong (I'm in the arts myself) and I empathize with you on the optimism that you can get it done. Still hoping to one day meet you in person. I would love to know HOW you found out about the estate sale (perhaps there's a video that has that in it and i missed it?). Still, I really appreciate you taking us along with such humor and fun on this journey. Looking forward to more of your videos. If some of the fabric is salvageable, schools, universities, and underserved areas might benefit from the abundance of fabric. A sewing machine can do WONDERS in certain communities, and with fabric to boot...you'd be offering people a way to provide for themselves, or possibly a way to make a living. You're an angel.
I was wondering what happened to Vogue 7189? It is a pleated skirt pattern with a top and a jacket I think. The pattern had mold. I would really like to have that pattern. And I do enjoy your videos! Thanks for all you do!
Aaaahhhhhhhhhh. I see. It makes so much more sense now. Of course you are a stage manager. I knew I felt an extra connection on top of the obvious sewing one. We theater peeps see endless possibilities in everything, don't we. 🤣😂
Live and learn. You’re young. Always plan double on size, time, issues, and expenses for any life’s challenges. I do highly recommend for you to use Lysol spray in the areas you have these items stored. Might kill anything airborne.
welcome to weird and wonderful SC! There are very few interstates and all local ridiculous 2 lane roads. Proud of you as I am completely overwhelmed with your HAUL! Maybe you can do your inventory and processing IN the storage Unit!
Stephanie I have never bought quite on this scale but have done estate sale buys always fun. I cant imagine how much fun it will be revealing all the fabrics.
We have all had those moments of leaping before looking and thinking but I would put your's down to being blinded by vintage. This has been fun for your viewers but I hope it doesn't do you in. Cheers!
Lol “bc 10 wasnt enough”… 😂 i have a never ending, always growing list of tips and tricks for every type Of craft (each list has its own binder lol go ahead.. laugh at me)
Write everything down that you did including the prices. Now write down those things you listed on this website in case you ever have a project like this. I have done lots of stage management type of moving and projects and have made similar mistakes. You did get a lot of stuff.
It is an average price. Some of them I am cleaning and charging more for, some I don’t have time to so I am selling for less. But I do think $7.50/yard will be the average.
Oh my. So funny but not funny. A thought on bolts being tossed. Maybe sell at buy at own risk super cheap plus shipping.🤷♀️ Just a thought from a creative person with no business skills.❤
The bolts being tossed aren't just "damaged" or iffy. They're potentially dangerous - if not to one's lungs from handling them, then for passing along rot or black mold to every item near them. Stephanie is really good about doing stuff like selling items discount, or free with purchase (just pay the extra shipping), for "iffy", highly damaged, or needs work items - that she doesn't want to put the time/effort into making into quality saleable (if that's even possible). And that's an attitude, and commitment to finding items homes that I really appreciate. When people say "just toss it" I always kinda cringe, but in this case, I absolutely trust there's no other safe option.
Note: for your investment you also got lots of really cool youtube content and upped hubby to recurring guest star status

OMG! You were able to get all of that for a little over $5400? I am impressed! I had guestimated it to be in the $20K range. Excellent work!
I love the screaming goat. I am not here solely for the goat. But, I love that goat.
I have one of those goats on my desk. 10/10 would recommend.
I have been thoroughly enjoying the saga of the estate sale shenanigans. Thanks, Stephanie!
I want so much of what you listed so far! I'm waiting for my Christmas bonus. I'm going to do as much damage as I can.
Aww thank you! I am listing as much as possible too! Because Black Friday, she is a comin....
As a business coach I approve of the profit potential! 👏 😂
As a sewist I wish you and this haul were in the UK so I could buy without it being a fortune for shipping.. 😜

Thank you! And yes, the international shipping is out of my control in the cost.
I helped my parents move a few years ago on a 48 hour truck hire. The fact the the Canada's did this all in 36 hours is a truly gargantuan effort. It also brings back all the stress I felt when I did it.

No. Thrift stores don't want rubbish. All you're doing by sending them damaged goods is making them throw it out for you.
No comments about the estate sale saga, just wanted to say that the green dress you are wearing is one of my favorite things you've made.
Same!
Yes!!

Yeah! I have become a real pattern addict!!
Fun fact, you can often call uhaul and get an extension with the truck.
« I, in my infinite wisdom » ahahahah. I’m going t start using this, it’s perfect
Happy to help!
I actually really enjoyed this. And I am typically not a fan of self-deprecating content. You have the perfect channel for “what I got wrong” informative videos! 😂😂😂
Never say No when Uhaul offers you anything and gives money also.

You always make silk purses, no matter what you start with.
I want all the notions! Allll the notions!
TRYING! I can send you home with some when you come visit.
Great haul. Keep an eye on that storage unit. High humidity and mold spores will not make a good combination.
Oh I know.

I totally love the screaming goat. You inspired me to get my own little screaming goat figurine for my craft area.
I need one, too.
@@suek7086 found it on Amazon for $10.

this is wild! Thank you for sharing. Also thank you for showing me that I don't have to keep everything even though I want to... like REALLY WANT TO
Well I think it’s brave. You took a shot. Congrats on the fabric haul of a lifetime!
Check with the sweater coat maker ... Katwise ... she uses tons of vintage trim
well - your dress is FANTASTic...regardless of the deets :)
We the ppl will do all that we can to make sure you make it all back, and yea I am ppl 😅!
You needed the 26-foot one with the lift gate ... and a bigger trashcan.
And there are "load and/or unload" moving services you can take advantage of.
Yes, I have used the U-Haul ones. The 5 star folks are worth it.

i can´t understand everything you say, but i love how you speak! you could read the telefonbook, i would like to listen! greatings from germany!
I am especially impressed with the support from you hubby. My husband would be screaming at me!!!!
Thanks for including the cost of things, it's really helpful.
I have a really hard time figuring out the "real" size of things, so without being there in person I would 100% have done the same mistakes 🤭
I love how, you teach others, while punishing, yourself out loud. OK, you, are super fun. And make me Lol
I might have also organized the fabrics by color.
That green dress looks so good!
I feel for you girl. Good luck.
Thank you!

Good points on "what not to do" 😊❤

Stephanie I have never bought quite on this scale but have done estate sale buys always fun. I cant imagine how much fun it will be revealing all the fabrics.
I plan out out trips using gas buddy. It saved me a ton when I did a lot of traveling
Wow! That was a great price all things considered and what you learned will be useful for future bulk buys! Thanks for sharing!
Woo wooo!!! Such fun!!!

My daughter is in Orlando and I would have totally given her to you for free work 😂
For the gas there are apps like gas buddy which’s will show you all the prices of gas in the area.😂
Hm i calculated about $1,000 in extra costs including storage unit fees.
I just love u😊
newbie here...now after 2 years, what is left from the estate sale in your house right now and what projects have you made from the inventory?
Same! And same! Do tell 😃

You are amazing
Two words on the fuel: Gas Buddy.
When do we get to see/ buy the notions?
You made me tired just watching this! Hope that you've gotten some rest. I really do enjoy your videos.
how do you find the estate sales?

are you selling dress forms
how many YEARS before our sweet Stephanie will sell enough to recoup her costs?
Ask US to help you!!! Think of all the people that would volunteer!!!
The fabric that I have purchased from this estate sale is really good quality. I’m trolling for more.
If you need a hand or 2, I volunteer as tribute 😊
Right now we are doing ok withe the three of us (husband, my friend and myself). But thank you for volunteering
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
If you have a plus size mannequin, I will buy it from you
I do not. Just a straight size store mannequin.
you will not get $7.50/yd for all the old fabric
