  • Was the iPhone 5- the final iPhone with significant input from Steve Jobs- the last true iPhone? It's been nearly a decade since Jobs passed, and many more iPhones have come out. Do they adhere to his original vision, or was the iPhone 5 the final one to be truly something special?

    Many iPhones have come out since Steve Jobs passed, and with each one you always get the question of what the former CEO would have said about the product. Could it be that the iPhone 5, the last phone for which Jobs had input, is the last 'TRUE' iPhone?

    The iPhone 4/5 design was just ahead of its time. Hence why Apple adopted its design language in recent years. It really goes to show how forward thinking Jobs was, along with everyone who worked on the iPhone of course.

    The thing that most people overlook is that the reason Steve Jobs was so successful was that he *wasn’t* nostalgic. He lived in the present and made what he thought best decisions for the days he was living in, rather than clinging on to the past, which would have been futile and frankly dumb. I feel like Tim Cook had mostly been doing the exact seem thing, but people romanticize Steve Jobs so much and “the reality distortion field”, they act like Cook is so much worse. The truth is, the vast majority of the complaints about Apple now are the exact same ones people had about Jobs. Anti-competitive, pointlessly getting rid of popular ports, overpriced, greedy behavior, some failed products (MobileMe anyone?) etc. Heck, if you look back at tech journalism from 2013, a lot of people were already getting sick of iOS 6 because the feature gap between it and Android Jelly Bean was ridiculous by that point, and it really couldn’t do a lot of relatively simple things, like downloading things in the background (if you tried to download a comic from the Marvel app for instance, you legit had to sit there and couldn’t leave the app). I’m saying this as someone who admires Steve Jobs and the older iOS versions, but nostalgia can really be a dangerous drug.

      The reason why people feel/felt nostalgic is because prior to iPhone X and now 12, there were barely any significant changes to the iPhone. Apple kept recycling old and ugly iPhone 6 design elements up until the current generation, which frustrated customers like me who wanted a phone designed in a way that didn’t feel inferior to Steve Jobs era. I no longer feel nostalgic now that I own the 12.

    I think that Jobs might have eventually caved on adding more sizes to the iPhones, but he'd find the current lineup way to complex and confusing for their customers. What is "Pro" about the iPhone 12 Pro? Why have a 12 and a 12 Pro when the only difference is 1 camera lense? And why have an SE and a Mini when the 2 could be combined to form one smaller AND cheaper iPhone? The same is true of the iPad lineup IMO. Why do we have a 12.9" Pro, an 11" pro, an Air, a Mini AND a bog standard iPad? It's way too much, too much choice for too little difference.

    • @MrCaps-sq4bk
      @MrCaps-sq4bk 3 года назад +14

      I understand what you mean, for example the iPhone 12 Pro, isn't that much different the regular iPhone 12. Besides the the telephoto lense and the bigger aperture, and the stainless steel bands and finishes, I think the iPhone 12 pros shouldn't really exist to begin with.
      However with the times, Android has many different phones at different prices to target different consumers, with different needs.
      What's important to note, that as long it has a strong purpose to be there, it's fine and it's the not same product, in the same category.
      There is a purpose for the entire level iPad, as not everyone wants to spend a lot for one, and makes it accessible to all, at a affordable price.
      the lineup could be adjusted, but it's important to note, just because we don't want a certain phone, that shouldn't it exist in the first place, Apple should investigate and explore the possibilities, but as long it has a strong reason to exist and not the same product in the same category I think it's fine.

    • @--2
      @--2 3 года назад +13

      I absolutely agree! There is nothing wrong with the new iPhones, but the lineup is too complex! And Apple starts working on phones years before release, so I think a part of the design, and the vision for the iPhone 6 came from Jobs!

      if you believe Jobs would’ve done anything differently I think you’re absolutely mistaken . I believe that one of the last things that Steve Jobs said to Tim Cook was to not ask what Steve would have done but for Tim to do what he felt was right and what was necessary. As much as I miss my iPhone 4, the iPhone 5 wasn't enough to prevent me from switching to a Samsung Galaxy S4. The competition with Android was and is still fierce. And Android phones, most notably Samsung phones where coning out with phones that were rivaling the iPhone. So Tim Cook and Apple had to adapt to the changes in consumer tastes, e.g. larger screens and better cameras. Some of the things that Tim did Steve would have probably done as well.

    I recently upgraded from a 1st gen SE to a 3 week old 12, unfortunately not the mini, however battery life is just amazing, and the small trick with beeing able to drop down the top half of your home screen for 1 hand useage is just simply amazing! Yes, Apples functions are behind android, however, things just… work on the iphone. I will still use my SE as a backup phone just in case, but overall, im impressed!

    Jobs would have approached the notch and camera bump differently... he would have forced lens tech to advance within apple's space allowances. The notch --he would have kept the bezels to hide it and woven it into the design so that it would be perfectly symmetrical. He also would have killed the audio jack sooner and probably already removed the lightning port as well. The iPhone 5 will always be my favorite phone model, (along with the SE 1 lol). I got the 13 pro now and the thing is always sticking out of my pocket. I would have gotten the 13 Mini but I wanted the 120hz display...

    I had a white iPhone 5, and I LOVED the sleek modern design of it. It's one of my favorite iPhones. I had an iPhone 6S for awhile, and I've had an iPhone X since it came out in 2017. I have really enjoyed using my X for the last four years despite it's fairly weak battery performance... it has long struggled to make it through a day when I can't charge it. It has a very nice design, a good camera, and a beautiful OLED display - and it still performs very well.
    I have a Sierra Blue iPhone 13 Pro on order, coming in November. I really like the return (since the iPhone 12) to the metal straight-sided design of the iPhone 5. The 13 Pro is so pretty, I will be getting a thin clear case for it, so it will be visible but protected.

    I’m not mad about larger phones because we rely on them so much more now, especially for productivity and media consumption. I’m disgusted with how the software reacts to the way larger devices - if doesn’t. You HAVE TO constantly reach to the 3% most inconvenient and hardest reaching areas of the phone for 65% of the most common needs (literally just going back, notifications, control centers and the media controls within it, safari search bar - I could go on!). Beyond that, it shouldn’t be as heavy as it is. We rest the entire thing on our pinkies like damn Apple.

  • @DjStiv3

    Its the last in the sense that it was made by Steve. Also the fact that he wanted an EASY ONE HAND USE phone. Thats why screens were so small for so long. After he passed the 6 came out right? And they did whatever they wanted to. He wanted one hand, thumb moves from one corner to the other diagonally. Instead we got these 6-7in giant phablets. I always thought 5in was the max and best suited, but everyone pushed even beyond that.

    • @MitchMatrixx
      @MitchMatrixx 3 года назад +2

      Are you out of your mind? Dude, I own Apple products, but this statement is absurd.
      My 2011 MBP (likely the same model as yours) is renown for its failing AMD graphics chip, to the extent that Apple would be sued under class action for the failure.
      This pattern of unreliability can be traced back to the pre-unibody designs, where the chassis were literally peeling apart from the bonding adhesive.
      Open your eyes man, Apple had the same damn reliability and quality issues that they have today.
      Jobs was a marketing genius, and their products are mass produced in “👌🏼Chyna👌🏼”, just like everything else.

    • @MitchMatrixx
      @MitchMatrixx 3 года назад

      @Nramanoodles
      Well, rather than refute my point, I think you extended it.
      I’m not saying (all) products are doomed to fail.
      I’m pointing out the silly fanboyism, and people constantly letting Apple off the hook for poor designs in DFM, so shave a few bucks here and there.
      To this day Apple continues to engineer things on an absurd level, but I suppose if you’ve never had to repair your own devices, this won’t occur to you until something breaks.
      Your M1 laptop is an iPad with a keyboard. It should work perfectly.
      But I believe you paid the same price as that, for prior generations that had more ports and a greater feature set.
      I’m done trying to convince you here, because your comment proves you’re a casual user.

    • @MitchMatrixx
      @MitchMatrixx 3 года назад

      @Nramanoodles
      Fair. Sorry if I came off hot.
      To me, at this stage in the game, M1 MAC is casual.
      Limited to 16gb ram, 2 thunderbolt etc., onboard (limited) graphics. Your use case determines what’s casual or not. Yes, things will hopefully improve.
      Apple has essentially killed off the prosumer market in favor of “cheap” (in manufacturing, not retail) products that share components. I get why they do it.
      It’s still bad for the consumer.
      Same goes with their absolute mafia tactics in regards to component supply, and R2R.
      Sorry I called you a fanboy.

    • @MitchMatrixx
      @MitchMatrixx 3 года назад

    • @xeienar
      @xeienar 3 года назад

      it seems that the M1 era will make everything different from now on. Since arm chipsets don't use the same RAM as x86 chipsets, I see the reason why it is not user replaceable. The same goes with the GPU... but there's nothing to excuse the ssd.. so that is apple being apple again.

    For me smartphone design was perfected with the Samsung galaxy s3/iPhone 6. They had very similar design when it comes to form and function. After that the design actually went backwards if you ask me. Because they started doing things like taking away features to sell accessories and just flat out increase prices by a lot! Also they started making screens with weird shapes and cutouts...
    I think the best, well rounded Smartphones are made by companies that try to get you to buy from them for the first time. Like apple already has the customers, they buy the iPhone anyway, now they focus their design on keeping them and squeezing them for more money.

      As photo quality became more and more important for mobile phones, as consumers began using their phones more and digital cameras less, phones needed bigger and bigger cameras.
      The only way to put bigger cameras in a phone without them protruding is to make the whole phone thicker (and heavier) so that the cameras don’t protrude.
      Would iPhone customers have been content to stick with thicker, heavier phones when Android manufacturers like Samsung started boasting that their flagship phones were thinner than flagship iPhones? Many reviewers would have stressed the ‘cult of thin’ and said the iPhone was outdated.

    Man, the design improvement was from the sharp aquos and mi mix 1. These are the legends in forward thinking designs. And that mix 1 beats the iPhone 4 design, by a long shot. The iPhone 4's design became outdated in 5 years and its build was matched. The mix 1, 5 years later not only still beats flagships and matches their build, its design is so iconic it still turns heads and still looks modern.
    You go on the streets with a iphone 10 and no one's really gonna bat a eye. You do the same with the mix 1 and everyone will ask you what phone that is. That right there is innovative design. That is what apple has never been able to pull off.
    The iPhone 5's design just examplefied some of apple's shortcomings. Its outdated design was apparent. The 5s helped to fix many issues but design and battery life weren't one of them.
