    Peninsular India - Mottled Wood Owl

    00:20 Brown Wood Owl
    Are LARGE, SOLEMN-LOOKING BROWN OWL WITH DEEP BLACK EYES found in the North, North East, Central and South West India. Their length is 34 to 45 cm, wingspan is 28.6 to 40 cm, and tail length is 15 to 29 cm. They have Blackish-Brown Head, White Eyebrows, and a White Horizontal Throat Line. UPPERPARTS ARE UNIFORMLY DARK BROWN, HAVing FINELY STREAKED UNDERPARTS, with FAINT WHITE SPOTTING ON THEIR SHOULDERS. JUVENILES ARE PALE BROWN, WITH BLACK BORDERED BROWN FACIAL DISK and PREFER DENSE FORESTS, WITH HIGHER ALTITUDES RANGING FROM 750 - 2500 METERS. THEY BUILD NESTS ON HIGH TREE CAVITIES, TREE HOLES, AND FORKED TRUNKS.

    EARLIER CONSIDERED AS A SUBSPECIES OF TAWNY OWL found in the Himalayas, North and North East India. Their length is 35 to 40 cm, wingspan is 32 to 37 cm, and tail length is 17 to 21 cm. Overall Brownish Grey With Finely Patterned Underparts. Deep Black Eyes. HAS AN EXTREMELY LARGE DISTRIBUTION RANGE IN THE SOUTH AND SOUTH EAST ASIA. DARK PLUMAGE AND SHORT BARRED TAIL. BRIGHT WHITE FACIAL ARC DEPICTS A LEARNED, SEVERE EXPRESSION. They are COMMON OWLS OF THE HIMALAYAS, FORESTS OF ASIA, KOREA AND TAIWAN. PREFERRED HABITATS ARE THE TEMPERATE AND TROPICAL DRY FORESTS.

    UNIQUE OWL WITH REDDISH-ORANGE EYELIDS. They are found in the Central & Peninsular India. Their length is 41 to 48 cm, wingspan is 32 to 37 cm, and tail length is 17 to 21 cm. Medium-Sized Densely Marked Orange-Gray Patchy Owl; Eyelids are Coral Red; Dark Eyes. BOTH SEXES ARE ALIKE AND HAVE WHITE CHIN/THROAT. Juveniles HAVE MORE WHITE FEATHERS ON THEIR ROUND HEAD. THEY PREFER DECIDUOUS FORESTS ADJACENT TO DRY THORNY FORESTS. FACE DISC IS MARKED WITH FINE CONCENTRIC BLACK AND WHITE BARRING. USUALLY they ROOST IN PAIRS IN DENSE FOLIAGE OF TREES. THEIR UNIQUE DUET CALLS ARE FREQUENT IN NOVEMBER (BREEDING SEASON)
