Not so bad. Upgrade the turbocharger by other with variable geometry and then the smoke will be less. this Issue is only accelerating at low turns at full notch.

But the quality of diesel is also responsible for black smoking... because of all the same locomotives haven't that same smoking at this acceleration and load, many make lesser smoke

Sure a little gradient may sort, this loco has 3300bhp 3000 at the wheels. The smoke is other cause:The engine has bad torque in lows,and a charger that has a bad response in lows too, and then the quantity of fuel going to the cylinders hasnt the correct amount of air, and this is the cause of the black smoke. In highs (high rpm engine) the smoke is virtually less,because the charger blows the correct amount of air. if the injectors may have a problem,the smoke would be in all the range of rpm of the engine.

the chugging indicates that not all the cylinders work with the same pressure. this indicate that one or more cylinders loose compression.

This locomotive is simply old and after doing some changes it will still give black smoke. We can't do anything with out new locomotives. Though I love ALCOs with black smoke.

No one can replace diesel locomotives. Even after coming of bullet train also. ALCO is God of all locomotives

Hope you know that just having electric locos doesn't mean no emissions. As long as the source of electricity in India is coal-based, there will be emissions. Apart from this, the source of energy required for manufacturing electric locos will also contribute to the carbon footprint.
