I lived with an Italian dude in Barcelona for two years while studying philosophy. Him and I had a "Day of Dante," every third Sunday of the months. We'd drink wine, eat tapas and talk Dante.
I think I learned more about literature and philosophy on those days.

honestly thank you for this because as you said, people in the US are so used to dante's inferno and the depictions of hell. We hardly have anything to grasp as far as what heaven is like. As a christian i needed this video more than you know because i didn't even know dante's paradiso existed. I need to feel a sense of peace about the afterlife instead of stories of hell all the time that make me scared to die. Its good to have some form of understanding (whether its truly accurate or not) of heaven for once. I want to seek more knowledge of heaven it is very interesting.
I recommend the Bible project here on RUclips! They’ve done several videos on theologically based theories on what heaven may be like. The rest of their content is great too.

Reminder that this is the Medieval equivalent of hard scifi. Dante takes great pains to stick to what most scholars of the day considered the way the stars and planets worked mechanically.
He also acknowledges that his portrayal is likely wrong but it doesn’t matter because it’s all just a portrayal made to fit his own understanding

It reads extremely well as sci-fi, particularly this last bit. It's great to see the roots of the genre in old writing. A bunch of stories in 1001 Arabian Nights also read a bit sci-fi (in particular the ones involving mechanical wonders like automatons that fly/talk etc.)

I love that Dante's Inferno is basically a story about a man who whilst seeing fantastical mind breaking shit his only burning question is "ay bro how's the war effort"

Then you've totally missed the point of the work. The war effort works on two levels: 1) Some people will think that it's a GOOD thing that Dante and the people in hell etc. are commenting on it. 2) Some people (usually modern day) will see it as RIDICULOUS that it keeps coming up.
At the end of the story, Dante realises that the war effort matters for nothing. He doesn't mention it anymore. The ending teaches us that our worldly concerns will have no weight when we receive our enlightenment, and urges us to live that way now.

The significance of Virgil’s inability to guide Dante to Paradise is actually something I think is worth some focus. Dante thought of Virgil as the great philosopher and mind. He represents the faculties of reason and logic; and while these reasonable faculties can orient Dante towards Divinity, ultimately when the time comes they are not enough. Instead Beatrice, a beautiful maiden, Dante’s love carries him where all intellect fails.
Also Virgil wasn't baptized so he wouldn't be able to set foot in such heavenly place.

The OC is a perfect example of how these stories have been extrapolated and twisted in various ways over the centuries, and now have people coming up with new more inaccurate comparisons. Because the OC hasn't actually read the books, they're going by these videos and have already forgotten that tidbit of information about Virgil and how baptism works in Dante's view. Wendigoon specified in this video about the beautiful maiden, but that information is not relevant to his idea. It's simply a way of saying ''as you level up in heaven you get more pretty''. That's it.
@@deletedaccount175 it's a bit of both, as said in the video the hierarchy is only a clever way to make the readers and humans in general understand how the heavens work or better what feeling they are supposed to convey therefore Beatrice getting prettier and prettier also ties in the scheme listed above.
Dante was also a man of his times and a devoted chatolic one cannot simply take those elements a part from the Divine comedy.

Late to the party, but honestly, this series has inspired me to be less negative about the world around me. That was a brilliant telling of a classic. When you're on the internet for a long time it's very easy to sink into the comfort of nilihism and make everything a joke because you can understand and pick apart the aspects of any story.
Towards the ending of purgatorio and paradiso your telling had me holding back tears. It was wonderful. I'm not even religious but I feel what Dante must have been feeling as he tries to answer life's questions and as I read in his attempts to explain them.
I think hearing wendigoon's breakdown of the divine comedy has made me reconsider my faith. I have strayed from God for a long time, but watching him breakdown during purgitorio and hearing Paradiso I think it's time to pray. God be wild for this one.
I'd also recommend Jordan Peterson's Exodus. He and his group keep politics 99% out of it (and talk unbiasedly when talking about politics, just observations they've made), and it's mostly a reading and breakdown of the Book of Exodus. It's free on youtube for a few more weeks (check the description of the first episode).

Also, neat little detail about when Dante talks to Emperor Justinian, he introduces himself thus: "Caesar I was and am Justinian." I just love the way this shows that even the most important and powerful titles have passed away into insignificance in Heaven, because they don't matter compared to the fact that you are a Son or Daughter of God.
Idk if anyone else follows this belief but under my belief we actually have Celestial names so our names on Earth are simply for identification. Kinda weirdly poetic and interesting? I dunno it’s fascinating
When I was a kid my gramps once told me that God gives every soul its own unique name and the names that we are given during our birth are just labels that we use to identify eachother. I remember that all my childhood I always wondered what name God gave me haha

The ending honestly creeped me out slightly, because of an experience I had once years ago. I was discussing these sorts of things with a friend, and I described what I imagine Existence/God looks like:
Imagine an extremely strong, tie-dye stress ball inside of a net. I described the idea of colors spilling out and back, looping on themselves', growing and receding. I've never heard someone with a similar picture.
I know God is incomprehensible (He says multiple times that you'd disintegrate if you gazed upon His face), but it's so fascinating to imagine what the Three-In-One would look like with all His power, omnipotence, and holiness, but at the same time, knowing that he looks exactly like us--Human

The weird thing is that even though the concepts and symbolism didn't affect me the way it got to wendigoon... I still teared up whenever he got moved to tears in this trilogy. Not because of the fact that he was being affected, but rather the fact that it meant so much to him, moving him to tears and it was just so beautiful in its own way. I don't really know how to explain it properly but the best way I can descibe it would be that the passion and beliefs he eminated was so beautiful that my own lack of faith and capability to see the world other than from a perspective of a form of nihilism made my existence seem more dull and cynical. As he found comfort and joy I grieved my existence as I at the same time felt so happy for him.

I'll be honest seeing you tear up reading Dante's prayer made me tear up too. It's amazing how almost ridiculous Inferno is compared to this (it's still good though). I felt the emotion you felt and maybe even a little bit of how Dante felt writing this. Having been kicked out of Florence and now in this writing not only reaffirming his faith in God but also moving on, leaving that part of him behind. He goes through most of the trilogy asking about the fate of Florence, now giving it up as he realizes that the life he lives on earth will ultimately mean nothing compared to the life he will live in Heaven.

I wanna say having grown up in a christian household, in the bible belt, with a christian missionary as a step dad, in a predominantly christian nation, at no point in my entire life has anyone ever said anything about what's in heaven or why anyone would even want to go there. It is literally never spoken about. It's just a place "you need to want to go" but everyone is flabbergasted if you ask why or what's there or what it's like. No one seems to know. Or have any answers. It's wild. So thank you for this.
I had a similar experience. That compounded with other doubts pushed me towards agnosticism in my teens. I had to do my own searching and studying to return to some semblance of belief and faith. The more complex, and imo important, parts of Christianity just aren't discussed unless you have a really good pastor or preacher. It's kinda sad.
@@es0teric76 That's probably because it's really difficult to explain and understand these concepts, not to mention some people may not be satisfied with the answers they receive, so it's easier for many pastors and Christians to dance around these topics. Plus there's also the possibility that a Christian's understanding of any one of these topics is flawed or incomplete, which then places the burden upon them of potentially misinforming someone looking for answers. Ultimately, the best and safest thing you can do is do research for yourself and discuss what you find with someone who is developed in their faith. If you're used to prayer, it can be a powerful tool for understanding as well.
@@judsonhester1407 I totally get that, but I believe discussion is extremely important especially when considering difficult topics regarding one's faith. Discussing these topics with others of your own faith is underappreciated.
@@es0teric76 personally, I think its similar to life. You won't always be given an answer to a complicated question but you will be supplied with the tools and knowledge to acquire the answer. If that makes any sense.
For example a discussion or a question I have always pondered is the never ending spiral of "God's plan." Why does God allow bad things? > Free will of the soul + the only way to show the difference between godly and evil.
Why continue to allow bad things? > Humans are forgetful and again the emphasis of free will and the choice to do evil.
If God is all knowing and his plan is to bring us closer to him would those who ignore him be considered a failure to God's plan? > They wouldn't be God's children. God didn't fail them. They failed God. Similar to raising and loving a sadistic child by providing appropriate disciplinary action, words of wisdom and guidance. In end the parents of said child did not fail the child but rather the child failed to honour his/her parents.
Can't God just magically appear and do things like the Bible stated, in that way that would soldify his existence? > doing so would destroy the purpose of the bible and the concept of faith and believing. Perhaps because faith in God creates change in one's soul..? Which is the only way to impact one's soul and pull them towards God aside from God non-consentually removing their freewill. Which means one must give up their free will that was given by God and abused by Adam and Eve in order to complete/purify one's soul.
I continue to find questions in which even I am amazed how I answer them.

Edit: another big complex question I have is am I/are Christians doing God's work out of "genuine love" or is it because we fear hell? And if I fear hell and do work out of the fear of hell does that mean I do not love God but am selfishly only looking out for myself? I mean I wish I could be like Job in the Bible or Jesus. I think for me, the answer to my question would be through faith. I think I have it wrong with the way I'm assuming that every Christian loves God instanteously. But rather like Jesus' apostles they walk with God in concern of themselves only to truly love God along their practice.
The way I always understood it was that humans simply aren't capable of realizing what heaven is meant to be, it's something completely out of our understanding as EVERYTHING we think of is influenced by our current span of existence in this plane. So simply put, something like eternal bliss and happiness forever with God and every other soul. I guess..? If you think about it as nothing but a human and not a child of God it becomes a scary and dull idea pretty quick.

I feel like Dante gets a pass for all the self patting on the back he did in Inferno. He wrote this amazing stuff, almost as if he knew that his work would be revered and referenced in the future.
Make sense that his bad side gets shown a lot more in Inferno since walking through the whole entirety of hell would eventually show someones dark personality.

There in Italy, Dante's divine comedy is covered A LOT through out school years, which to be honest, fking sucks, because we had to memorize poems and stuff. But seeing it as a format in youtube, made me realize it's not actually that bad, thank you so much for covering all of th Divine Comedy.

Same here, always comforting to be reminded of the other people who are close to God, juxtaposed to all of the people who are so violently against Christianity. Especially being so young, it's hard to not feel superior to those people. I just have to remember that there is no "better than" unless it comes to God. (Also sorry just had to vent a little I guess)

I was raised as an atheist. My dad emphasized the idea that organized religion tends towards scams and rackets, and living in Utah, this ingenuine nature was plain to see in my experiences. In high school I experimented with several psychedelics after getting into marijuana which led me into multiple experiences in which I felt "spoken" to by being itself. Slowly but surely this has brought me a fascination with various religions' approach to the idea of a power most high. And I can't pretend that Wendigoon's Divine Comedy videos haven't brought me to understand why Christianity is the most commonly taken path to reach an understanding of the highest power.

I dont know a single person who has tried psychedelics that isnt at least spiritual if not religious in some sense of the word. If we all come to a similar conclusion then odds are its at least close to the truth.

I'm going to spoil the day and say that that's because he suggested that it was tearful and not because it was tearful. Humans are really social so, well.
I had a baptist upbringing, going to church every wednesday for youth group, and sunday with the family. Getting this entire rundown through Dante's Inferno as told by someone who is just as excited while still seeing it through a realistic lens, tickles every single one of my fancies. I cried at the end of Purgatorio too, with the same exact emotion fueling it. It really was one of the most poetic spiritual stories I've ever read, and the Greek mythology/biblical mash-up was everything I've ever wanted. I have a relationship with God as I know it, and hearing stories about things like God waiting for us in the garden of eden is so powerful. The thought that eventually we'll be free of the stresses we've placed on ourselves as long as we walk a selfless path with the intent of contributing to the greater good gives me a sense of hope that makes me emotional. I have chosen not to attend any church because of how I feel towards organized religion, but after reading and hearing this series from another person who read it makes me miss church. Thank you, Goon. Subscribed for sure.

I’d really love to hear wendigoon talk about lovecraftian stuff one day. It’s the kind of thing that keeps popping up to me but I never had the time or patience to go through the original works to actually be properly educated about it. And Shakespeare too. Old literature is really good at putting me to sleep.
Most of Lovecrafts stories a pretty short. You could probably get through one in an evening if you put your mind to it.
I Loooovved Lovecraft's works, but it still takes me almost 3 days to read a short story because he structures his sentences weird + uses old language I have to look up + he can go on and on and on.... 😴

There is a film version of Lovecraft's Color out of Space that released a few years ago. Takes a lot of liberties with the story but it keeps the central idea and horror intact. Highly recommend

Man, I just love how casual and polite you are in your videos, even the small touches like thanking us for listening to each of the videos or ads, the down-to-earth way of explaining or describing things. It just feels like I'm listening to one of my friends who are going on about something they enjoyed watching or listening to. You are honesty one of, if not my most likes guys, both on yt and in life.
I'm not a very religious person. My parents always have been, but because of my own experiences, I feel that I don't have a real place in the church. It doesn't feel comforting for me. So for the last 7 years or so, I've had little connection to the idea of religion as a whole. This series makes me crave that spiritual fulfillment. These videos spoke to me on a very intimate level, and I think that this for me marks the beginning of a journey towards the spiritual fulfillment I've been missing for so long. Thank you for this.

As someone who had a similar encounter, with falling from the church. And slowly creeping my way back to religion in general. I say keep pushing. I’m now studying at a college to become a youth pastor. It’s nothing like churches have told me over the years. A relationship with a God who loved you so much, He died (bodily) specifically so you could be with Him. While it’s cliche to hear for many, John 3:16 is shared so much for a reason. Go check it out. I went from a lust filled selfish life, to a man who is at his church every day for work and serving the Lord. Jesus loves you, all He wants is for you to do the same to Him :)

@fck peace if i recall correctly, its explained somewhere in the Fixed Stars section in this video that after Beatrice (or whoever she symbolises in Dante's life) passed away, he lost his way from God to some degree and essentially pursued the wrong meaning. Beatrice went to God to get permission to send Dante on this journey so that he may once again understand how to find his way in life. The story then begins in Inferno with Dante and Virgil at the entrance to Hell, marking the beginning of Dante's progression through the afterlife to understand life and existence

I was just blessed with my first biological child. The part talking about how children who died too young to understand the concept of choice were blessed anyway really got to me. It strikes me as such a beautiful concept of children's innocence and God's love and wisdom.

Its a testament to Wendi's charisma (and I guess Dante's narrative) that he can relay to someone like me, an atheist, the emotions and themes and everything about a work all about religion, and get so invested and emotional over it that it not only makes me care, but "get" and empathize with all the good and hopeful things that come from people that do believe.

As a christian myself, concepts like this really hit home in a way I never expect. Im at work as I'm listening to this, and I had to hide in the walk in fridge for a little bit because I couldnt stop crying. The symbolism and explanations of pure love and peace are some of the most beautiful pieces of literature I think ive ever listened to.
And yes I'm still in the fridge right now. I'm still crying.
Edit: for those wondering, no I am not still in the fridge 2 days later. And for the rest of you wondering, i work in a lab so we have a big fridge we can walk into to get stuff out of. It's big and really soundproofed (for some reason) so a lot of us go in there when we need to vent or calm down

As an Italian I can tell you Dante is a very big deal here. He is considered the greatest Italian artist to have ever existed and we even have an obligatory high school subject that concerns only the study of Divina Commedia.
His face is also on the Italian standard 2€ coin.
From a plot point of view, yeah the Divina Commedia can feel very "fanfictiony", however it's its other characteristics that cementified its importance, and unfortunately those elements get all lost in translation.
It's how this story was written that really sells it, there's symbolism even inside the way it's written. The words and letters and phrases are all divided in groups of Biblical numbers and they are paralled among all three parts of the Commedia, not to mention that with each passing verse the wording and allegories get much more elegant and eloquent to signifing the approaching to God and Paradise, with the first part of Paradiso that has so much crammed into it by a literary and allegoric point of view that it brings a person to tears.
Between the "fanfiction" elements then, people often forget the real message behind this masterpiece. It's not only a cautionary tale about life and death, but it is also a heartfelt appeal against both political sides of the time and the terrible divide they have created (a sentiment that is current even today), while also being a personal story.
It's not for vainglory that he chose Virgilio and Beatrice to led him, same for the choosing of the setting.
Dante was at his lowest at the time, he felt betrayed by the political and ecclesiastical systems, he was exiled by his city/country in a time where patriotism was a big deal, he felt destroyed by the recent death of the love of his life Beatrice, he started questioning both his faith and his talent. This whole story is basically a big therapy session for Dante, and man it freaking rocked it in my opinion.
So what I'm getting at is that maybe when Dante wrote the ancient poets lauding him, he wasn't bloating.

I mean, he's technically correct about the moon and the dark spots. The light in the craters is, in fact, shining differently than the light reflecting from the surface. It's shining different because of shadows and why Dante didn't think that maybe shadows could exist on the moon, idk, but he wasn't entirely wrong.

I really cannot express how much I enjoy these videos. The vibes are always so chill and I love listening to these whilst I'm drawing. I also love the open thoughts and interpretations on faith and love, as a Christian these really resonate.
I’ve said this a lot during inferno and purgatory. But there’s just so theology in the parts that makes so much sense if you’re a Christian. There’s parts where you’re hardcore saying it’s true and it’s just amazing. Dante put in so much work into this

I never had any idea that Dante’s Inferno ended with a third section in such beauty. There are so many cool concepts, and I genuinely hope that Dante found the paradise that he had so much faith in.
No other story has lasted so long and been remembered as Dante Divine Comedy, you can't help but think there's some divine work to keep it alive to this very day and still hold that value and have people still look back to this story. Almost 700 years and this story is still strong and has put in people hearts
