  • I hold a sign that says "I'm doing a social experiment" and people come and approach me. Then, we discuss what is holding them back from not paying for needless animal exploitation, abuse and slaughter.

What is this activism tangibly achieving? We need to get a global switch to plant-based diets because of the difference it would make to climate change. If the animals are mistreated, that's also a reason. We are nowhere close to where we need to be with plant-based diets. The word "veganism" is probably working against you. There's an implicit sense of guilt if a person doesn't go 100% plant-based, and guilt and failure discourage people from trying. This works against the goal. If you could instead make certain diet swaps viral, that would have more of an impact than trying to get people to just overhaul their diet entirely with anything less than a complete overhaul being considered a failure ("even if one animal suffers because of you, is that acceptable?"). If switching to oat milk or almond milk went viral, that would have a big impact. Who cares if you convert any particular person to veganism? I don't. I care about the global system. If an entire forest is on fire, dumping gallons of water on one tree to try and save it doesn't have as much of an impact as just water-bombing a big area without caring which particular tree is saved. There's a reason firefighters don't go in and try to put out the fire on just one single tree, and instead they try to slow the fire overall. In the same way, trying to convert one person to veganism isn't as effective as getting swaths of people to just swap one animal byproduct staple in their diet for a plant-based staple. I hope this makes sense.

It doesn't make sense. If we were talking human rights violations, would you take the same position?
You don't care about an individual 'converting to veganism' because you're not the victim. If you were, you obviously would care. A single comsumer eating 'animal products' is responsible for the torment and violent death of hundreds if not thousands of sentient beings througout their lifetime, so them going vegan will result in many animals not being bred into existence and condemned to a life of misery and a cruel death.
Needless to say, the more reach you have, the better. It is however not at all easy to go 'viral', certainly not with a message that isn't sugarcoated or watered down.

In the excellent book, Less is More, by Jason Hickel, he has a beautiful section on the dualism that has come to dominate our society - the beliefs that mind and body are separate and that man is separate from nature - both factually wrong in very important ways. This guy perfectly illustrates this dualism along with the horrible way it makes you think. The view that nature is no more than a pool of resources for us to extract and exploit, and animals are just fleshy machines within that pool, leads to very toxic thinking and the destruction of our living planet.
    And us with it.

It's not an exaggeration to say that his logic is actually fascist.
Valuing people only based on their utility is deeply inhumane. As Cip says it leads to brutal oppression.

Cip, great advocacy but I just need to highlight that you could be challenged on these stats about climate change at 29:26
Agriculture is NOT the largest source of greenhouse gases overall. That is fossil fuels. For sure.
Agriculture overall is about 25-30% of emissions and animal agriculture is about 60% of that portion.
However that is not the end of the story.
First you are correct that animal agriculture produces a lot of methane and NOX and these are powerful though short lived greenhouse gases compared to CO2. So if you want to reduce warming right now, reducing these gases is a great idea.
Secondly, the land is a huge factor. These two stats are the important ones.
If we stopped farming animals we would get back 76% of agricultural land - 3x the land area of the USA.
If we rewilded and reforested that land, it would sequester 15-26GT of CO2 for at least 30 years. That's about half of all carbon emissions today.

    • @veganpowerlab
      @veganpowerlab  Месяц назад +1

You’re right! When I said green house gases I meant strictly methane and nox. But, seen as greenhouse gases refers to also co2, then my stat there was wrong.
Thank you so much for pointing it out! 🤗💚

Why is the title of this live stream "Nonvegans beware!"? I'm on board with the idea of plant-based diets because of the health benefits, the lessened environmental impacts, and the welfare of animals. This won't cause me to ignore vegan videos. However, I wonder if it will cause other people to indeed ignore vegan videos. Let's think of a similar situation. Say McDonalds came out with some new type of ice cream that they wanted to sell, and it had a lot of refined sugar in it. Suppose McDonalds wanted to tap into the health nut demographic. Would they advertise this ice cream with the slogan "Health Nuts Beware! Our ice cream is loaded with sugar."? That would be advertising suicide if health nuts were the demographic. Similarly, if your target demographic is nonvegans, why are you saying "nonvegans beware! I'm going to tell you how unethical your lifestyle is."? That seems counterproductive to the goal. If you want to get people on board, work with them, not against them. Tell them about the health benefits. Tell them about how plant diets are better for the environment. Don't focus on animal mistreatment so much. I know you want to tell people all about how factory farms mistreat animals, but when you are trying to make a connection with people to change their beliefs and behaviour, attacking them with accusations that their lifestyle is unethical is not the way to go about it. Who cares if you leave out the animal mistreatment discussion if the result is that a lot of people switch to plant-only diets?
