Hello, Legacy player here chiming in.
1.) Many players are not aware, there are 2 drastically different versions of FFXIV 1.0. Version 1.0 (pre-Yoshida) and 1.x or patches leading up to 1.23b (which was about 2 years of Yoshida working on version 1.0.) Edit. Naoki Yoshida, took over FFXIV 1.0 only 3 months after it initially launched.
In fact, version 1.23b is the time that Naoki Yoshida gained his reputation. He did a lot of work with version 1.0, and I am not familiar with a single person who complained about a single thing he did through 1.x patches.
2.) The biggest and main reason Naoki Yoshida decided to create A Realm Reborn, was the lack of ability to implement a duty finder/party finder systems.
"To be honest, when I first took over FFXIV version 1.0, the first thing I did was check to see if it’s possible to implement a cross-world matching system with our server team. What I found out was very disappointing. Not only were we not able to implement a cross-world matching system, we could not even implement a matching system within the same world. I felt that this feature was so important that I was willing to toss all of the server source code for FFXIV version 1.0 and completely rebuild the server structure for FFXIV: ARR."
Touching on the first part more, version 1.0 had the fatigue system, and stamina systems. Both systems were gone by version 1.23b. 1.0 didnt have jobs, chocobos (as you mentioned,) instanced dungeons, trials or anything. By 1.23b jobs were added, combos, materia, chocobos, dungeons, both instanced and open world, and a great deal of other systems were added, such as Hamlet defense, Skirmish (my personal favorite!) and other exciting and fun things such as chocobo caravan, trials, including Ifrit Extreme and Darnus Hard mode, and a large majority of 1.0 players were enjoying FFXIV, and excited to be part of the FFXIV community!
Note: for anyone who forgot or didn't know, yes Ifrit extreme was in version 1.23b, and was required to complete your relic, which back then relics were extremely rare, and very powerful!

You're certainly right on both points and I actually found it out when doing to research for the last video I released. It's really no wonder that Yoshida's reputation is so impressive. Although thankfully they did make the changes to allow for the duty finder as I imagine that the engine rework has allowed a lot more than just the party finder to be added over all the years.
In hindsight I probably could have made it a lot clearer in this video I was talking about launch specifically and that the follow-up was about patches -> ARR but that's part of the learning process in youtubing.
Thank you for watching, and for your really well informed comment. Love hearing from the legacy players who really are just have that unique perspective on these kinds of topics

The stamina system was great, the servant system was a good idea but not really well implanted.
Actually Elder Scroll Online look like a good evolution of FFXIV V1.
The game use stamina and not timed competence, the game use multple guild merchant located all around the world (similar to how worked servant in V1 but for Guild and not players)
Actually, I never loved what Yoshida made with the V1. the extra content was good, the rest...
He made it too much like FFXI(job and timed comp were not needed) were the original FFXIV give us much more freedom. And after V1, it was just WOW.
It's sad Hiromichi Tanaka never add the ability to great the FFXIV he wanted.

    • @chevalierkraken
      @chevalierkraken Год назад +13

I played the V1 since the Alpha and FFXIV a realm reborn until Shadowbringer. And I can say one thing. Yoshida didn't save FFXIV, he didn't even tried. He killed it to make another game more similar to his taste and more mainstream.
Many thing in the V1 worked and just needed to be polished and out of this, it lacked extra content and needed better level design. It was unfinished, not bad.
Like I said, FFXI and Elder Scroll online are proof an enhanced V1 could work even without making it like AAR.
But Yoshida wanted the game to be the WOW Killer (when Hiromichi Tanaka just wanted to make it the successor of FFXI, an oldschool and immersive game), so he stopped to support it, and now he even make fun of the V1 and peoples who liked it. It's why I hate when people say he is the FFXIV savior.
As an FFXIV V1 player back then, I never understood why the Poll to enhance the game were released when the game was set free (so When many people who just played it the have a free game were here) and why It was able to people who don't play the game to participate to the poll (they didn't know how was the game and just give idea who morphed the game into what was popular and not what it was need to enhance it).
The new FFXIV is a great game for casual gamer and people who love spectacular Cutscene but I liked the immersive, slow and oldschool feeling the V1 and FFXI had.
They were game made for the players who played it and loved it even if they were few, not for potential new players.
I read a review saiying thait FFXIV was a theme park and FFXI was more like a National Park and it's also aplly to the V1 (who was a national Park too).
And something sad is that Yoshida way of thinking the MMORPG also kill FFXI because he pushed the staff to make it more casual and don't give them money to really work on it (no HD texture, no new expansion, no fix of old raid, no classic server), making it just a great solo game and people wanting to play the game as a great MMORPG need to play in private classic server.

@@kurtleonce6221 you should try elderscrollsonline, the game feel like FFXIV V1 and FF11 on many aspect.
Like I said, the stamina system and the guild merchant remind the V1 of the game but there is also the fact most of the dungeon are open, you can try to beat a dungeon made for 4 people alone.
The game also let you customize your character. Like on the V1 of Ffxiv, you can use only a limited amount of skill in same time and you need to chose them.
And if you chose a class at the beginning of the game, you are free to use the weapon and equipment you want and skill related to them and mix them with your class skill.
And like in FFXI there is not only one equipment set by level, but many as you can wear every equipment of the game.
The game also have a companion system with a relationship system and exclusive storyline who remind me the adventure fellow from FFXI.
The game is very immersive and is for me the proof Ffxiv didn't need to be rebooted.

1.0 didn't even have auto-attacks at launch. Combat was _entirely_ Skill/Spell based.

I played the beta in sept 2010, it was atrocious. It was similar like FF XI but much worse since it was missing a lot of functions that made XI bearable. The neatest thing is that there were no map segments for the area's. Thanalan was all 1 zone, shroud was all 1 zone, la noscea was all 1 zone. But it pretty much looked like a maze on the minimap and was quite overwhelming lol.
Also next to nobody can shut down an MMO and rebuild it. This may never happen again. I thought the game was done for and i never kept up with it after it shut down believing it couldn't possibly be improved that much. That would be true 99% of the time because nobody can afford to rework an MMO from the ground up. I never gave it any attention until my friend played it and i thought he was crazy until i checked. They probably didn't actually need to rework the gameplay as much as they did. A lot of the game's issues were fixed by the time the 1.x patches started rolling out and a lot of players were actually pretty upset when they tried the ARR beta to find that the gameplay had been changed to tab target hotbar combat, even though discussion from the devs and screenshots before that point had indicated that the latest iteration of 1.x's combat was being carried over. The change of game engine was definitely still necessary though; most PCs could barely run the game, if at all; there was no way they were getting that version of the game on the PS3 LMAO.

Everything I've seen about 1.0, is that was almost entirely a spiritual sequel to FFXI online, an MMO made for 2002, before WoW changed MMOs forever. There were few people who played those hardcore MMOs and even fewer who enjoyed them long term, so the audience was always going to be limited. Even ARR to Stormblood was still designed around the Classic WoW design of diceroll randomness in combat, rather than the Retail WoW design of streamlined stats and removal of missing attacks that Shadowbringers brought to FFXIV. I'd imagine WoW passed Japan developers by since it's mostly a very western game and Japan doesn't have the largest PC gaming audience. But WoW's inspiration on FFXIV is very clear today.

You forgot to mention the game engine that they chose for 1.0.
They decided to save money (and focus on graphics) by using their most visually impressive in-house game engine, Crystal Tools. The problem was that Crystal Tools had only ever been used in one game before, that game being Final Fantasy 13. Final Fantasy 13 had taken a rather harsh beating at the hands of critics when it launched for being a "corridor simulator", because it wasn't capable of rendering large, wide-open areas with lots variety. At least, not without absolutely melting any system they tried to run it on - especially the PS3 which was intended to be the flagship console for the game.
They ended wasting huge chunks of development time trying to hammer the uncooperative game engine into something that could at least *pass* for an MMO, leaving little time left over to actually build the game itself, which resulted in a completely unfinished game at launch time. What's worse, they *still* had to make major compromises just to get it to run, which resulted in zones like the black shroud consisting of nothing but a few dozen identical corridor assets copy/pasted together ad nauseam.
The selection of the game engine was one of the most crippling blows to the game's development and would have single-handedly sunk development with or without the other issues you mentioned. Together, it was just kerosene on the dumpster fire.
1.0 was doomed pretty much from the start of development.

Speaking of the business decisions that allowed such a buggy, broken game to be released: Being a long-time FFXI player, I got an invite to every closed beta test. The first one I took part in, I made a laundry list of many of the issues that plagued the game and ultimately lead to it being remade, and posted it to the official FFXIV forums in the beta testing boards. And their official response was to just remove the post, as they did with many of the other testers who commented similar things. And we're not talking about rage-fueled hate rants cursing out the developers either... these were posts from long-time FFXI players who wanted to see a new Final Fantasy MMO succeed, given how old and dated FFXI was starting to feel at the time.
Now, I quite liked the systems in the game, the menus and the way skills worked. The lag was atrocious, but the game had a very FFXI feel which I personally enjoyed. I'd *love* to go back and play 1.0 (or technically 1.23) again if it were possible to do so without the lag. But that said, that experience as a beta tester, pointing out the issues only to have the devs completely ignore not just me, but everyone else who brought them up... it really showed me how square enix feels about its Playerbase. Yes there are developers like Yoshida who do try to make a good game for us... but the execs at the top? we're less than garbage in their eyes.

So unfortunately I have had to start ARR over like 8 years ago. I played off and on since the original re-release. Mainly just give it like 2-3 years then re-sub and play through the MSQ until I got bored. No one wanted to play with me so I just did what I wanted by myself.
Since Shadowbringer's it has shifted though. I found an FC on the server that actually cared. I did lose interest again but, when I came back before Endwalker finished (2-3 months) I re-subbed and did all the things.
Dawntrail is actually enjoyable since this new FC seems to be decent so. I am enjoying myself a lot more than I can remember.
I found myself going over some of my old videos trying to get controllers to work on PC for 1.0 with my level 16 THM. Interesting and potato as it is LOL.

I have to say: As much as everyone says 1.0 was ass; The game does seem to have a certain kind of style that I deeply wish ARR retained. It certainly is a more polished game from the looks of it, but it has foregone some of that spirit that FF14 1.0 was (trying to) emit.

It was originally intentioned to be on the Playstation 3, although ended up being cancelled from what I could tell. I think the idea was to have it release a little after the PC version, however after the poor release it was kind of scrapped in favour of panicing before Yoshi-P came in. Then resources were devoted to the improving 1.0, building 2.0 and then making 2.0 compatiable with the PS3 with the new engine they created
Best that I could tell, alot of sources are a bit vague on the specifics. Thank you for watching

I think it's an important distinction to recognize that ARR is not an "overhaul" or a "rework." It's a sequel. It's a different game built in a different engine with different gameplay, zero content overlap, and a story that picks up five years after the story of 1.0, which remains canon.
FF14 is not a game that was fixed, it's a game that was deleted. The only numbered Final Fantasy game that's impossible to play today. For the most part people are content to play "XIV-2" instead and pretend that it's FF14, but the actual 14th mainline Final Fantasy game is lost media.

So basically the original devs took what was originally proven to be shit and went ahead and used it anyways? Pretty bonkers! Unsurprising that basic human psychology dictates that people would rather not be punished into waiting to level up properly but instead be rewarded for waiting and doing the same thing.

As someone who is just starting to play this game and just came from ESO, I have to say I am kind of dissapointed with the graphics currently. Game is very washed out, textures are bad. • @valgardgaming
      @valgardgaming  2 года назад +1

That is a very fair critique, especially early on everything is pretty dated which is why they're putting in a ton of effort into graphical updates for 7.0. But that's probably end of next year so not really helpful now, so hopefully the story is what your giving it a go for as that'll be 100% the driver
