- Pete's first visit to Late Night with David Letterman during his promotion for the White City album, Nov. 12, 1985. Sorry that Pete didn't feel like playing anything but it's a fun interview showing what he was thinking before he gave in again and let The Who reunite.

One of rock's greatest and most thoughtful songwriters. Won't Get Fooled Again is the greatest rock anthem ever.
Agreed in full. "Won't..." is the anthem of my youth which to this day remains my all time favorite rock piece. But as for albums, Quodrophenia towers above all others.

Pete's always entertaining, whether on stage or in interviews. He's a great conversationalist!
He is one of the most articulate people and has such a way with words I could listen to him just bring interviewed all day

I read Horses Neck while at school. I read it again thirty yeas later and loved it just as much. That's rare, for a novel or poetry to have a equal impact as a mature adult as it did as a teenager, albeit for a few different reasons.
A genius of our time - as a songwriter, musician, performer, and innovator. Thoughtful and insightful, Townshend has always understood, perhaps better than anyone else, the capacity for music to create deep connections with the audience and to be a transformative force in the world.
Very well said and I agree completely. The world could use his life house project right now. The simple meaning of a note in a song. Expresses that joy you feel when experiencing music. It's otherworldly. He totally gets it and is able to articulate it

I’m curious Who (ah see what I did there) your top 5 are. In no particular order: Ray Davies, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Pete Townshend, Bob Dylan. If you put John and Paul together, then maybe you could throw in one more. Jagger maybe. I know I’m leaving everybody post 60’s out but I have yet to hear anything that was on par with the 60’s.
@@allbottledup9513 Well for.me its The Who, George Harrison and Ringo (tied) as well as together with The Beatles, The Tubes (early is better), Tina Turner, GnR, Ann Wilson, the Coop and Donovan. Those are my Top 10 musicos.

Although i am certainly not a virtuoso guitarist and I respect musicians with a high level of technical skill , I am in awe of people like Pete who can compose and arrange brilliant songs , one after another . Also, Pete writes all the lyrics which is another skill set altogether and puts him in a category that damn few can claim admission to
I remember watching this interview live. Still think about it from time to time and glad it made it to RUclips. My VHS copy is buried somewhere.

Pete has been my musical idol since '73. The man is super interesting and inciteful to listen to. When it comes to great rock and roll he's the man. Long Live Rock!
Probably my favorite songwriter ever. Tommy to this day still hits me in the feels. It truly is a musical experience/adventure imho.💯
Yes and that's just a smothering of what he has done in his life. He just released a new single the name of it is on the tip of my tongue but it's really good. His music touches me in so many ways like nobody elses
It's 2022 and Pete and Roger are in their 70s. They just started another tour playing to large audiences.
I was 14 yrs old in 1968 when I saw the Who ( $7.50 Canadian) - they where phenomenal : )

I waited on John Entwhistle and Simon Phillips when they were touring in '88. They came into our restaurant, unfortunately without Pete and Roger. Entwhistle autographed my "Live at Leeds" album, quite a thrill.

@@gardensofthegods Sad but somewhat true, the autopsy report has been on the internet. Entwistle died in his sleep in his hotel room with a groupie the night before a concert tour. A small amount of cocaine was found in his system. This aggravated an existing heart condition, aortic aneurysm I believe. He didn't die of an overdose per se. But indulging in drinking, smoking, cocaine when you have a heart condition, if you are aware of it, speaks for itself. He passed long ago, but as with Moon, I wish he'd been able to overcome the addictions.
@@D13fs yeah thank you for that info... yeah , too many people in the industry getting caught up in all kinds of addictions... I never really met an addict who was actually having fun... they always end up getting sick of having to constantly look for that next High . I'm glad I'm Eminem was one of the smart ones who was able to deal with his drug and booze addiction.
I just saw him in an interview ( Sway and Eminem / kamikaze interview ) and he looks good , really healthy for 48 . I don't think he got any filler injections or any of that nonsense like Keanu Reeves and other high-profile men .

White City: A Novel was my saving grace in 1985 after my parents died 4 months apart. I remember that time well....and also the whole 80's scene helped me in dealing.

In college I played drums in a power trio "pizza band" and we took that live version of Bargain and used it as our template for the song live. At the time it was the only version we had ever heard and man that was a show stopper of a song. You could really chew into it live and people responed to it with big round eyes. Pretty sure I got laid a couple of times just because of that songs ending. I had Keith's licks down perfect as I was obsessed with his playing at the time and nailed it pat.

"The Last Time" and "Under My Thumb" were on the 1987 Two's Missing LP. That was their first official U.S. release. In the U.K., after the single, "The Last Time" was on the Direct Hits compilation and "Under My Thumb" was on Rarities.

Pete Townshend actually seemed to care about England and the British people. I see it in a lot of his songs and interviews. On a different note, when Letterman was on NBC he had one of the best shows on TV. I miss it.
I think Pete was a true socialist. Not a Champagne one. He never flaunted his wealth unlike other successful rock stars.
True, one of his solo lps has a song on it called "English Boy". He has written that he could never even consider living anywhere else, even though some of his peers in rock have done so. Keith Moon actually lived in California for a spell.

Thanks for that, I thought it was one of those two albums that I had originally heard those two songs but as I said memory fades. I may actually still have Who's Missing and Two's Missing boxed away with some other stuff I haven't seen in decades. Pretty sure I didn't throw them away but my Mom might have back in the day, not sure. Who's Missing has a stellar live version of Bargain that just kills, wish they put out an album of that entire show as the sound quality of the recording was tops.

These Sell Out songs were ever performed live: Mary Ann With The Shaky Hand, I Can See For Miles, Relax and Tattoo. Out of those, Relax performed live at the Fillmore East is my favourite. But I agree with you, The Who Sell Out is a great album, and it's a shame they didn't perform more of those songs live. I would have loved to hear Melancholia performed live, for instance...
All you have to do is go on here and look up the who live at Fillmore East 1968 they play all those songs pre-tommy. There is a show on RUclips from the day MLK was killed in april 1968. MLK means Martin Luther King.
The expanded cd version of live at leeds features a nice take of tattoo. Even better than the studio version, imo.
Glad I saw them couple times - 2002 in MSG in NY and at the NOLA Jazz Fest in 2015. Mom talked with Pete about their mutual love of Meher Baba backstage at Berkeley in 1970; no kidding!

If you look around, someone may have posted The Who doing "Relax" from the 1968 Fillmore East bootleg.
Of course Under My Thumb wasn't on the original Odds and Sods album that was released in 1974 which was a single album format. John said there were enough songs for a double album at the time so I guess they must have added the rest by the time CD's allowed for more songs to be applied to the format. The other Stones song The Who recorded was "The Last Time" which is on RUclips and isn't too bad.
I'm not sure about that, I used to have two albums of unreleased stuff called "Who's Missing" and "Two's Missing" and it's been so long I can't remember if that's where I heard the two in the first place, sorry about that. Memory is a terrible thing lol.

He still lives in England, not too far from the likes of Paul McCartney and Jimmy Page, so he must be okay with it.

Simon philips one of thje best drummers. And Pete got something about misery. About liking it or getting used to it. I love Pete Townshend. I ended up with a preacher full of lies and hate, i seem to scare him a little so he showed me to the golden gate. Can you see the real me?
I think he had certain childhood traumas, and also had battled addiction later on. Probably anything he went through in this time of his life was pretty tame compared to what he had experienced beforehand.
A lot of people don't know that in the early days when the Rolling Stones were in jail or some such thing The Who recorded a couple of stones tunes. I think Under My Thumb was actually one of them. It's been so long I can't remember the other one, not even sure it was Thumb but they did record two tracks.
"The Last Time" was the other song they recorded, in order to keep their peers' music in the public eye. Pretty generous of them, I think.

Well at least Letterman was respectful of him. That's a relief. I just finished Pete's autobiography and that makes this even more interesting. He often refers to himself as a "jumping bean" in the book. Now I see it wasn't just on the rock stage.
After reading Pete's and Roger's bio, I think a lot of us who are creatively inclined can relate to Rog's and Pete's accidentproneness, competitiveness and good natured stubbornness, as well as Pete's strange combination of striving for perfection and occasional selfdoubt. There is a weird adorableness to honestly admitting those things along with the insecurity creative people have.
He is a modern Day Beethoven or Bach...

townshend has the kind of dismissive attitude towards people only a handful of really talented people can allow to have, I wished I knew this in my twenties, you need actual talent to back that attitude, and pete had it and has it in spades
Dismissive? I doubt there's another rock star that ever cared more about regular people and fans more than him. Now, he does have that air about him a bit, but I wouldn't call him dismissive. Specially not of the fans. Now Dave? He should be treated dismissively , he was a dick.

He was dismissing all musicians as stupid, sarcastically, after jokingly demonstrating that when the drummer hit he would compulsively leap in time- so it was humor aimed at himself more than them.

By 85 in Britain Unions were destroyed unemployment was soaring because The Tories didn't believe in public spending to create jobs and crime and drug addiction in industrial areas increased rapidly as a result. It was the idea that large economic expansion is somehow to the benefit of everyone which was used as an excuse for this. I think that's what he's talking about
