Pete is (as usual) making a nuanced point about pop v. punk v. performance v. rock, but Shelley Winters isn’t up to it. She sees it as all the same. It’s all punk rock to her.

This interview is absolutely brilliant. Pete was incredibly candid. These days, people are so guarded mostly because everything they say will be analyzed to death on social media platforms.
Thanks for posting this. I have always loved The Who. To me, they are just behind Pink Floyd in terms of what appeals to my ear. Quadrophenia is a masterpiece. I put it ahead of Tommy.

I love Pete Townshend. Aside from his artistry, always a sharp dresser for one. For a guy who was not traditionally handsome at the time, I'm glad he didn't change anything in his face. He has beautiful blue eyes with dark hair, grey now, but he's made the most of what he's got. It's just an observation because more than ever now, people are extremely critical of looks and so many resort to plastic surgery to fit a mold. If Pete had fixed his nose, he would be kind of bland. I think he looks like an emperor.

I have a massive photo on my wall of him, which I've never seen anywhere else, and it's the greatest concert photo I've ever seen. I bought it as a poster in 1970. Edit: Also, I’m American so it’s not a regional way of thinking. It’s just how he comes off to some people. They see him talking himself up and think he’s arrogant. They don’t realize he’s a genuine genius.

Richard Stilgoe - wrote comic tunes on a TV consumer show but went on to work with Andrew Lloyd-Webber. Michael Parkinson a great interviewer of a type that's rare now - he interviewed interesting people in such a way that they often opened up with him and with the other interviewees. It was not interviewer as star in their own right so questions were just to promote a product with no content. Jonathan Ross could achieve that height sometimes

All due respect to Shelley this is a perfect example of a celebrity inserting herself into a conversation in which she’s not invited.

I’ve never seen him play lead guitar like that! He’s normally known mainly for his rhythm guitar.

Still love Schecter Telecaster most of all his sic string brushes. Underappreciated tone

How fucking cool was that giving Dad a big kiss. Pete Townshend is a musical genius and one of the best people who came out of the 60s

I never saw Pete in this light. Between playing his guitar like that, him and his dad on stage jamming, deep discussions about life and the music scene, it's amazing. I have a new respect for Pete after seeing this. The same goes for Roger Daltrey.
