I watch this often. Thankful to see a video focusing on Merle. There's lots out there on Doc, but Merle didn't often get the attention. Thanks to whoever posted this and too bad these greats are gone. Will never be any more like them.

The song originated with the Watson family. At any rate. It is out of this world! Unique to the Watsons w/bassist.

The first known recording of this song is from 1964 by Henry Reed. It is almost certainly a very old fiddle tune and it did not originate with the Watsons. www.loc.gov/item/afcreed000115/

The openback for old-time is actually a more recent "idea" . Check out some old videos of Clarence Ashley, Doc Boggs, Wade Ward all used resonators later on. There openback thing is more of a round peak deal ala Kyle Creed. there are some exceptions like Roscoe Holcomb.
Thanks for the video Merle has always been one of my favorite banjo pickers. No a lot of video though.

JR Rushing Merle needed a resonator to be heard over that damned electric bass. Ugh.

Well, yes and no. Originally no banjos had resonators, they came along later to enhance the volume. Open back banjos being used for old-time music now is a return to the roots kind of thing. Many, many old time players used resonator banjos, again to improve the volume, in the days before common and reliable amplification methods.

I know it was the 70's but it would have been better with an upright bass
