Size does matter, smaller ships may be faster and can turn sharper BUT they cannot operate in the open ocean nearly as well. Larg swells toss them around and they cannot cross the ocean either. These larger ships are what truly own the open deep blue ocean.

Even in calm water smaller ships aren’t really faster, all things being equal a longer ship will experience less resistance in the water, while having more room for engines, longer does mean slower turning though

The squarish main tower contains the Aegis Combat System. The Aegis Combat System is an integrated weapons system, which uses computers and radars to track and guide all the ships weapons to work in concert destroy multiple enemy targets at once.

The reason the scaffolding was replaced with the angular towers was to reduce radar return signatures. They played with the geometry so the signals bounced off at angles that don't go back to the emitter.

The angles of the newer ships are to limit and deflect radar. That's why the radar equipment is encased in an angled case kind of thing, and even the railings are angled.

Many of these newer ships look much like the Arleigh Burke class US Destroyer. This video talks about armament but what these ships have, along with Ticonderoga class guided missile cruisers have the AEGIS system which is what makes these incredibly effective fighting ships. They are also quite agile. The screws blades are able to rotate without having to stop and change to reverse. You could put the port engine in a reverse position and keep the starboard screw in a ahead position and the ship can pretty much pivot.

If you want to take a look at the original stealth ship, look up the Sea Shadow (IX-529).

  • @mohhughes4870
    @mohhughes4870 7 месяцев назад +1

You mentioned it's not the size but the punch. I'd argue the versatility is also key. Destroyers can be tasked for different roles, and it's important that they have the ability to shift role - from anti-ship, to anti-sub to anti-air - with as little refitting as possible, typically armament.
As a kid during the Cold War I always marveled at Soviet destroyers and cruisers - they bristled with missiles, guns and mortars! Especialy compared to their US counterparts, whose deck seemed to be flat except for two turrets with 5 in. guns, and maybe some rail systems for missiles. What I did not appreciate was the magzine difference: The Soviet ships pretty much showed their cards, with very little storage space for additional role capabilities - meaning that if things changed in theater and they needed to engage new threats they either had limited capability or would need to restock. In contrast, the magazines on US ships are HUGE, permitting them to carry a good complement of firepower to meet whatever role they may be called to play while in theater. They are in the hull, which means they aren't visible. The launch rails for the Standard family of missiles gave way to verticle launch missile blocks that can carry a variety of target-based orgdinance - more modern Russian ships have adopted this concept to a degree as well.
The "scaffolding" for C3 is basically being covered with angular, RAM-coated material to help reduce the ships' radar signature.
And the Taiwanese Kidd class ships are old - I think the Kidds served in the 1960s in the US Navy. Though they appear to have got upgrades (CIWS, e.g.).

@@ExUSSailor TL:DR, The Zumwalt is the biggest waste of tax payer's dollars when it comes to the two ships.
The LCS cost roughly $500M per ship and the Zumwalt-class cost roughly $4B per ship. Out of the two, one has 30 ships with 5 more being built and the other had 32 planned, 3 built, 2 active and 29 cancelled. Zumwalt was the one cancelled with the reason literally being that it was too expensive for what it was and was a waste of money. The American government is obsessed with spending money and stupid crap that it does not actually need yet it felt the Zumwalt was too expensive while the LCS, with all its issues, are still being built and commissioned. I take that to mean the Zumwalt is in fact, the biggest waste of money.

The company i work for is a Navy/DoD contractor and we make parts for all the Navy's surface combat ship classes. Primarily for the DDG (destroyer), but also for the LHA (landing helicopter assault), LPD (landing platform dock), the new FFG class (guided missile frigate), and CVN aircraft carriers. In regards to the DDG Destroyers, its a case of "dont judge a book by its cover" because they may look "old" but they are far from it and have proven themselves to be the backbone and workhorse of the Navy surface fleet as seen by the number of these ships in service (68). As of right now, expect the production of the DDG's to last well into the 2030's under the current contract orders. Unfortunately, the Zumwalt class were never really meant to be taken seriously because they were an experimental class. The Navy wanted something new so they could put together dozens of new system concepts and see what works and what doesnt. The real downside was that these systems were made by multiple vendors, so trying to get them all to play nice was an impossible pipe dream. Then combine that with the flawed engineering of the aluminum super structure (the bones of the ship) and what you get is a very expensive parade float with so many service problems that the Navy cancelled 29 of the 32 that were originally planned for. Of the 3 that were built, one is in active service, the second is active but with a "provisional" tag meaning its limited on what it can do and its currently in port for hull repairs, and the third is still undergoing sea trials (open water testing) because of all the problems.

In the age of missiles, size is everything(maneuverability not so much). The bigger the ship, the more missiles that can be packed onto a ship. Also, a bigger ship usually produces more power and has more space for cooling, which allows for more advanced radars and electronic suites. The Chinese type 055 is combination of both size, stealth, and advanced weapons system. It also depends on the mission, the US has both the Zumwalt and the aegis equipped arleigh burke class destroyers. The Zumwalt is designed to support land operations with its massive guns and incorporates stealth design so as to not be spotted by enemy radar on the shore. The arleigh burke does not need stealth, as its role is to protect the carrier group, which means advanced radar, electronic suites, and amount of surface to air missiles are the main priorities. The Japanese, Koreans, and Chinese have all taken aspects from the arleigh burke destroyer design, and the Koreans and Japanese incorporates the American design and made aegis system as well.

The Arleigh Burke class is one of the most powerful destroyers ever built. There are 67 in service and 4 under construction. There are plans to aquire a dozen or so more. The oldest are being upgraded to Flight 2a and are expected to serve through 2050 and beyond. Yes they are an older design but why fix what isnt broke. These are some of the most powerful warships in the world and the newer ones are only getting better.

There's something really interesting about you, a native Brit, saying that you really like the Kongo-class ship. Obviously like everyone else, Japan is cycling through the same names it's used for other ships. This is the third time they've used the name Kongo. The first was on an old sailing ironclad. The second is why it's very interesting you say you like it. The IJN Kongo was a fast battleship/battle cruiser that was made by the UK for Japan just a bit before WWII started in full swing. Japan then took Kongo and built 3 more ships to accompany Kongo, but the second ship bearing the name was in fact a British made ship intended and served for Japan. So it's kind of weird/fitting that years down the road that a ship bearing the same name is judged (by the cover) to be good by a Brit.

And it is typically called a "crow's nest" not an eagle's nest...though if you keep saying it, you may eventually replace the old phrase with your own.
At 12:50 the video says the Taiwanese Kidd class is crewed by "marines"...this is no doubt an error in translation, or from some other cause. They should have called them sailors...or seamen, since you like that better. LOL

Just an FYI about the Zumwalt class. It is literally a complete failure! The largest waste of military funds in the history of the U.S. 10 Billion dollars of development and 4.5 BILLION dollars each to produce. The Navy declared the ship "failed to perform." The guns wouldn't work, nothing it was designed for would work. The Navy received 2 ships and tried to cancel the 3rd but Susan Collins Senator from Maine pushed thru a 3rd ship for the shipyard in her state (Bath Iron Works shipyard). Since the program costs exceeded the budget by 50 percent, triggering an automatic cancelation according to the Nunn-McCurdy Act, the line was finally canceled.
The Navy tried to decommission all 3 of these boondoggles but Congress said NO. This cost the U.S. taxpayer 25 BILLION dollars for 3 ships; You wanted them, you got them, find SOMETHING they can do! So the Navy has removed their non working guns and are trying to figure out a way to use these dreadful money pits. In short, the Zumwalt class is a complete failure.

As originally designed, the main weapon was designed to use a gun round that cost $1 million each. That system was scrapped for being ridiculously expensive. The entire vessel costs over $3 billion. It was a major screw up by the Navy! This, like the Littoral combat ships, was a total waste of money. The Littoral Combat Ships are being decommissioned after 2 years, and the Zumwalts will be too.

Hmm. If some of these classes have a deck and hangar for helicopters and only go about 30 knots, how do we objectively justify disqualifying the Izumo and Hyuga classes? I mean, clearly they're not destroyers except as a political fiction; but where can we draw a line that excludes them without being extremely arbitrary?
The Zumwalts are a failure, despite the fact that their design has some really nice features. The big problem is that their main guns are fundamentally useless, because somebody thought it was a reasonable idea to allow the company that developed the things to make the main gun work like an inkjet printer: you can afford the weapon itself, but you can't ever actually use it because the ammo would bankrupt you. Stupid. I expect some of the other features of the Zumwalt design may show up in some future US Navy destroyer class.

But my point was that the Zumwalt was never supposed to get rail guns. But i to believe the navy should have gone with the same gun thats on other ships than trying to develop the gun after the ship was built.

The Kidd-class is a Spruance-class with the Mk-26 launchers from the early Ticonderoga CGs. Built around 1980. Originally purchased by Iran before the overthrow in 1979. Taken in by the US Navy until the late '90s then sold to Taiwan.

If your ship packs enough punch it doesn't need a lot of mobility.

With todays missile and radar systems, "mobility" isn't that important anymore. Naval guns back in the day? Yeah, ya want mobility. Those days are gone.

I don't know where you live, but if you have a walk-in clinic type place near you, you may be able to get shots for a migraine. Just make sure that you have a ride to and from the location, because some of the shots that they can give you make you unable to operate a vehicle. There are also pills better than the ones you would get at your local superstore.

Japan doesn't have much of a military at all, thanks to the treaty signed between japan and the US at the end of ww2. Basically, the US stripped japan of any semblance of a powerful military for something like 100 years in exchange for American protection.
Japan does have a military, but it cant stack up to any major powers because of that treaty. Their ships are limited in size and numbers as well as their air force and army.

When we’re talking about size it’s not necessarily about length and width bub. We’re hearing about the weight basically. It could be shorter and still weigh more.

The Taiwanese Kidd class destroyers have a long and curious story - they were originally designed and built in the US, but were intended for the Iranian Navy.
After the Shah of Iran was overthrown, they were then commissioned into the US Navy - serving from the early 1980's into late 1990's when they were de-commissioned, and "mothballed",
they were then sold to Taiwan in 2005 - so yes, they are an older design, but they have a very powerful anti-air defense package.
