I've been using Firefox for many years now. The speed has never been an issue to me (despite what many articles have said, the real life differences between speed in browsers IMO are too small to notice without a direct comparison). What did irritate me was the switch away from Adobe for RUclips (I had a lot of trouble playing videos for a long time) and some stability issues watching videos (which thankfully are now long in the past). Generally speaking it is the only browser that allows me to still use a traditional pull down menu system which I find far more intuitive rather than struggling with the more modern approach of just hiding everything.

I've always used Firefox, and I use it on Mint. I like that I can. pretty much customize it to what suits me best. As far as speed goes, I have pretty good internet speed, and don't see any, meaningful, difference between them. I do have Brave downloaded on one of my laptops, and do use it occasionally, but Chrome, and pretty much anything associated with Google, or MS, leave a really sour taste in my mouth. And before you say it, I do understand that Brave is just based on Chrome, but still.
So, my go to is Firefox. I don't really have any major complaints, although I'm not to happy when they update it and any extension I have loaded has to be reconfigured or doesn't work the same as in previous versions (Open In Sidebar, being one of them. Probably one of my favorite extensions). I'm kind of a minimalist, don't like clutter or nonessential buttons/tabs on my browser. I like only what I use, and if I need it I can add it later, and if I don't need it, there is no room for it; just takes away space for what I do like and need.
What I'm not sure of though, is you say is you have problems with all of them in one sense or another. I'm curious on what your perfect browser would be?

I used to be a Firefox guy, but it was kinda becoming lacking in features I wanted in a browser, that's when I found Vivaldi. When it comes to features, it's the best I found so far (tab grouping, page tiling, built in mouse gestures, the customization, the ability to take screenshots of entire webpages), but the performance is stil definitely lacking, especially with RUclips where it tends to randomly hang for seconds. Dunno if they'll ever fix that since it's been going on for months now.

Tab grouping is the one killer feature I wish firefox had. I still use firefox to this day because it's what I've used as long as I've been using computers for the most part, but when I got my friend to try firefox, he loved it at first but just had to switch back to brave because of tab grouping. Firefox does have trackpad gestures but only on mac btw. Screenshots are also great on firefox: you can do screenshots of a full page, just the view, or a selection and choose to either copy it to your clipboard or just save it entirely. Also, what type of customization are you referring to?

    • @TarnishPrower
      @TarnishPrower 2 года назад +1

@@cidsx For example rearranging the extension icons. I don't have to go into a customization menu like with Firefox, just Shift + left mouse button drag and it's done. I can place the tab bar whereever I want in the window (left, right, top or bottom), I can select what kind of tab stacking I want (compact, two-level, accordion or disabled), I can disable the Close buttons on the tabs so that I can't accidentlly press them when switching between the tabs (I have closing tabs set to the middle mouse button), you can customise the mouse gestures, you can set up a button to go back to the previously viewed tab, you can enable tab popup thumbnails so you can see what's actually open in that tab. Just small little things like these that you don't even think of, but makes using the browser so much more intuitive and convinient.

There are nowadays a number of different extensions that implements tab groups, each with slightly different take on the idea, you'll likely want to shop around and see which one you liked best.
Even better than Tab Group IMO is Container Tab. Containers not only allows you to organise tabs, but also becomes your security boundary when you visit sites in different context. Or you may just use it for multiple logins.

Firefox has some compatibility issues, and its PDF text search has a 7-year-old bug in it that causes it to miss matching text.
Brave lacks autoscrolling on Linux, and extensions cannot fully restore it. Brave also lacks persistent user agent spoofing without extensions (many of which are horribly outdated), though your OS might come with settings to reduce the amount of info the browser can reveal about your system.

I'm using Firefox. I do send my tabs from one device to another relatively frequently but the Linux performance leaves a lot to be desired.
On my netbook where Twitch streams would max out the CPU and freeze from time to time needing a reboot under Windows, the linux version fares better. Doesn't max out the CPU and doesn't freeze but instead it drops frames. A lot of them. But so does Vivaldi so I can't really choose a chromium base and expect better.
Stranger though, when I use Linux Firefox on my desktop it runs smooth in a single window taking about 10% of my GPU but when I open another window with another Twitch stream for example, both streams start dropping frames like crazy and my GPU utilization is at ... also 10%, it never goes above. Funily enough on Vivaldi a single window with a stream will drop frames but opening two of them in separate windows they BOTH run smoothly.
If anyone has the same issue and is wondering what my workaround is: I run one window with a regular Firefox and another window with a developer Firefox. These are separete programs so they don't communicate and both windows will run the stream smoothly. That's what I do on Linux, under Windows Firefox runs perfectly fine all the time.

As speedometer has "DOM" in red, it probably means the tests are based on DOM operations.
Chromium-based browsers are expected to win because the Javascript engine in them, V8, is faster than other implementations.
NodeJS was born exactly because JavaScript became fast enough to run in the server after V8 was created.
Firefox is not damn slow, but its JavaScript engine, SpiderMonkey, is not as fast as V8.
I don't how to classify rendering engines here, except for Midori's situation.
Midori, for me, was really expected to be the slowest, because it is based on Webkit. Webkit really really really sucks.
It may seem surprising because Chromium's Blink was a fork from Webkit.
The issue is Webkit is maintained by Apple and Apple doesn't give a shit for the web. Amazing browser APIs take years to appear in Webkit, or even never do, as push notifications for PWAs. iOS only has Safari and denies any browser implementations in the App Store (Chrome for iOS is forced to use Safari's webview).
Apple doesn't want smart, high performant browsers made with Webkit, because app-like experiences in the browser would take app manufacturers out of the AppStore. They then say publicly something like: "we didn't implement those 16 APIs because of privacy concerns".
In the Chrome Developers channel, they used to make a lot of performance experiments and Safari was always the worst. Firefox even beat Chrome sometimes.
I watched all those videos, until they released one where they do not name Safari and just call it "the odd browser", because Google's legal team advised them to do so.
Safari, Midori, Epiphany and so on will always be slower than any other browsers. Even Edge's original rendering engine was faster and more up to date/standard-compliant than Safari's.
I'm a web developer and when I'm developing for modern browsers, there is always some Safari-only bug to fix.
Search for "Safari is the new IE".

tbh vivaldi is the best browser imo, not purely because of speed, but because of how customizable it is, you can have alot of features, or a really slimmed down version, or a mix.
i used to be a firefox user, then i turned to chrome, then i hopped to opera for a while, and while opera was good, it has since, iirc, gone chinese, and that's when i found vivaldi.
another browser i despite is opera GX, its just a jazzed up version of opera and promises alot of things i really dont care about, and i absolutely hate the gimmick of it.
    i never got into brave..
tbh try out vivaldi 5.0 update chris, you'd be shocked to see how far it's come! (even though idk when you last used vivaldi)

just a quick addon, many browsers might have mouse gestures, but can your browser, with NO ADDON, do a custom macro and assign a hotkey to it, from the browser itself(with no addon or third party app installed, i.e fresh install)?
vivaldi can, and it can do so much more, sure, its a bit of a setup, getting to know the browser, customizing it, finding the correct settings etc, but vivaldi imo have so much functionality it amazes me sometimes, tab stacking, tab tiling, chain commands/macros, hotkeys for built in translation, it has a screenshot tool, you can almost customize everything about it's visual and functionality. only thing it's really missing at this point is that you can drag and drop stuff and write code yourself to add onto the browser.
i just discovered they have a built in rss feed, it has its own mail system and whatnot else

Interesting video and the timing was pretty relevant for me. I switched from Firefox to Vivaldi after they forced the new interface change. Vivaldi has been great until this last update a few days ago and now it is noticeably slower (even with extensions disabled). I just ran Speedometer on Vivaldi, Chrome, Edge, and Firefox and Firefox came in first (138), Chrome second (133), with Edge third and Vivaldi coming in last with 89. All the browsers had the exact same extensions installed. Firefox actually one two more extensions installed that are not available on the Chrome-based browsers. In benchmarks, yes, it's slower, but in practice it's about the same. Maybe it was bad at some point, but it's fine now. Just choose whatever honestly. Most of them are chromium based, so most of them are about the same. If you're like me and you have like 50 different extensions and like 100 tabs open, you can forget about the performance differences between browsers because that's really not the issue here 😂
