The fam really did call back to the Fifth Doctor (who also was a kinder, more human incarnation who followed a more pragmatic, alien one), and it had the same feeling. It wasn't like the other companions of the new series, where it was an intensely personal, one-on-one relationship. Rather it was a group who'd formed and stuck together, just like Nyssa, Adric and Tegan. It was more a personal relationship between all of them, hence "fam". Similar to the times when Rory, Amy and River were all with the Doctor. They all worked together as one. It's a different style to how companions usually are, and one that's only occasionally visited (and yet it was how the series started: Susan, Ian and Barbara), but I liked it.

Lovely cover! Is The Lone Dalek something you've thought of covering? It's such a lovely piece and the end minute or so is used during the beach scene of Doomsday. In fact the entire suite of music used during the beach scene (after the actual track called Doomsday) is so beautiful and I'm really sad it was never released as it's own piece :/ again, great video 😀
