I started reading more into it after the deal between Scooter and HYBE since I do follow K-pop. I remembered him being mentioned in some scandal with TS, and I started reading up on it. A lot of K-pop and BTS fans (mostly ARMY) were making comments like "He better try what he did to Taylor," and that's what got me looking more into it. I then realized the "Taylor's version" on her songs when they would come up on my Pandora, and then I saw this video and voila. The dots were connecting, and the more I read, the more I understood why so many people were not too happy with the colab deal.

She owns the "Taylor's version" songs the masters from years ago were bought by Scooter Braun and she said she was interested in buying them but the only option they gave her was to give them ownership of her new album in exchange of one of the previously recorded and so on.
I believe she holds a writing credit to her songs therefore she still gets money out of them, but... the decisions with what to do, when to play, who to allow to play her songs, who to sell it to is only made by the people who own the masters to those songs. And the masters of those songs are sold away from her, hence the $300M. She's now re-recording all her songs because she wrote them before, she can just create new versions of it (Taylor's Version). These new versions will be distributed by Universal Music Group her new record label, who allows her to own the masters to these new versions. So every song that has (Taylor's Version) on it means Taylor own those songs, and she has the main decision when to play, where, and permit anyone she wanted to play those songs.

She asked to buy her albums but they said she would be able to buy her 6 albums only if she made 6 more albums with them. That means they were trying to trap her more, and when Taylor's team and the company was discussing and trying to reach a negotiation deal. In between all this, the owner scott sold it to someone else WITHOUT her knowledge. She thought since they were in middle of negotiation, she would be able to buy it. But he mislead and blindsided her. THAT'S what she didn't see coming:- scott selling it to scooter(man she hates) WHILE she was in the middle of buying negotiations herself

Why doesn't she own her own music?

She owns the "Taylor's version" songs the masters from years ago were bought by Scooter Braun and she said she was interested in buying them but the only option they gave her was to give them ownership of her new album in exchange of one of the previously recorded and so on.
I believe she holds a writing credit to her songs therefore she still gets money out of them, but... the decisions with what to do, when to play, who to allow to play her songs, who to sell it to is only made by the people who own the masters to those songs. And the masters of those songs are sold away from her, hence the $300M.
She's now re-recording all her songs because she wrote them before, she can just create new versions of it (Taylor's Version). These new versions will be distributed by Universal Music Group her new record label, who allows her to own the masters to these new versions. So every song that has (Taylor's Version) on it means Taylor own those songs, and she has the main decision when to play, where, and permit anyone she wanted to play those songs.
most of the musicians do NOT own their music. it’s sad, but it’s true. this particular situation has raised this important issue, and literally at least some renovations have begun. now a lot of people are discussing this issue and the fact that musicians, not labels, should own their music.
