So I love this topic, and honestly the more that I see Peer Into the Abyss the more I love Deflecting Swat. I've stolen at least 4 games by swatting Peer to target me, and killed another several opponents by swatting Peer back at themselves when it was cast into boardstates with Sheoldred or another draw punishment piece in play like Keterect Parasite. It is such a fun spell to play with targets on the stack 😂
I came here for the gameplay; I stayed for the podcast. The gameplay was the gateway drug to y’all chemistry in these commentaries! Keep up the great work, and have a great day!
I like this format a lot. It's like a selection of things that get organized into some sort of imaginary list. Like a layered list or some sort of steppe list, like a ladder or podiums perhaps, a hierarchy. Top tier content
Amazing episode, very informative as always!! I did prefer having the more well known, powerful cards at the beginning, because it makes everything easier to follow when you refer to them throughout the rest of the episode, rather than the repeated “we will get to that”. That being said, as long as these keep coming out, I will be happy!!
I love Intuition so much! My favorite pile I ever got was Essence Flux, Red Blast, and Culling the Weak in Inalla. I had to reset a Scholar of the Ages and had a reanimation spell in hand
All the black and green you were down on Defense of the Heart, Shared Summons final parting, playing Meren or Dina getting a Mikaeus Ballista line works like a dream. Lack of interaction with blue is the only reason these commanders aren't played at the top any longer. Even though they are very mana efficient.
I used to play final parting in Korvold Demon Chain and it was pretty great there. You can bin Squee and get foodchain to hand or bin a demon and reanimate or dockside and animate dead etc.. it was good for the time. Once I realized I was almost always grabbing dockside and reanimate I started down the path to “Korvold Unchained” .. my kinda treasure stormish build. Sans FC.. it just isn’t needed.
Cards like the recruiters and spellseeker are also "one card wincons" in the sense that they can toolbox for cards to break parity or to unlock the board. Not a wincon per se but definitely pushing you into more Ws. I think an interesting way to think about this is just "cards that you cast and you probably win if you get to cast them, like 30%+ of the time"
I’d like to know your take about graveyard hate, like void effects, Tormod’s Crypt or at least Grafdigger’s Cage. Why don’t we see more often this kind of effects in a heavy graveyard recursion format as CDEH? And Tormod’s Crypt is a card that can easily go infinite by many means, btw…
Grafdiggers cage is good because it’s 1 mana and can be targeted by urza’s saga, dauthi voidwalker is another good piece of graveyard hate, problem is if your not hating on anything then it’s kinda a dead card, so they need to be good outside of stopping some graveyard shenanigans
Divining Witch in Hermit Druid lists with Tyvar/haste enablers is a nice include, I run it in my Raffine list as another creature and it sneaks into my Tymna Thrasios list just as a nother creature.
Intuition with Kess on the table for thassa, consult and reanimate is also a win. There are a few commander specific intuition lines that are worth looking at even without the specific colours of breach and sevinnes
There are spellseeker lines in UGW+ with thrasios as Commander: ephemerate, gsz or neoform to devoted druid, enlightened tutor to Swift reconfiguration
Great video! It might be more accurate to call them one card assemblers instead of one card combos since they're finding all the cards to win instead of winning.
Postmortem Lunge saved my ass after losing hermit druid to the graveyard so many times. Also, I believe Hermit Druid was my first cEDH turn 1 win with Kenrith. If you don't win, it's absolutely relentless testing the board for constant repeatable wins practically every turn.
I love it when HD dies, most of the time i set it up when I have a revive with haste like Postmortem or Shallow Grave, playing it in Sidisi, very fast variation of it.
Make defense of the heart better by playing “ Forbidden Orchard” this land taps for 1 mana of any color, but you have to give an opponent a 1/1 spirit creature token. You could add red for the 2 cost red extra turn spells, but they are risky. I prefer a simic deck for this because you add counter magic and extra turns.
Very cool video! I would argue you missed a 1 card win con, gamble. It is a gamble to win (funny that) but you use gamble to get breach, and then provided you dont discard breach, you cast it and use breach to recast gamble a few more times to piece together the win, at that point it doesnt even matter if you discard what you looked for as well.
Dylan man this casual slick back hair look really suits the moe and you're a very engaging speaker so showing the lines and character in your face only adds to that. But just how it reveals your hairline makes it age you a bit. I was actually watching this episode too this time.
the fact that you guys didnt mentioned Prosper on the doomsday pile got me fuming (JK, its the most underated doomsday pile), im loving this ranking podcast episodes guys
One thing you missed for hermit Druid is that it can fold to negate interaction they just counter the dread return and an extra bad card I play is memory’s journey it just shuffle back orical to try and win the next turn
Hoarding Broodlord probably found its way in your circles already, but it can't be understated. It's not just a PITA resolver, it also assembles Saw in Half lines that include Eternal Witness + LED/Culling the Weak. It's a really strong reanimation payoff, boardstates where Razaketh can't win (low creatures, or lifetotal) are no longer an issue. It also sets up Razaketh super well, since saw in half pumps tokens, you can be really creative in win conditions. It's also scalable with creature based gameplans. Hard-casting this thing is not unreasonable and also sets up Razaketh by itself. This thing is literally a combo piece and a 1 card win-con all in one. TLDR: Razaketh + Broodlord > Razaketh + Protean Hulk (in the right scenarios). I know I never shut up about my Meren list, but it sincerely feels like a jump from a fringe win-con (Golgari Hulk 🤢) to something way more consistent and versatile.
Divergent Transformation could definitely skyrocket to the top of the list with the new Etali. Etali + Displacer Kitten = cast all spells in everyone's deck .
I’m writing this early so sorry if it gets mentioned, a much less mana intensive Imperial Recruiter line is to go get Goblin Recruiter, which is ironically also a 1 card combo, to set up conspicuous kiki combo.
It definitely doesn't make the top 10 because of how bad it actually is, but the Goblin Recruiter pile is still my favorite (and incredibly awful) 1 card combo, little sad it didn't make the list, but I get that it's probably just not worth talking about anymore Loving the combo series though, really helps me keep up with lines I'm not as familiar with!
I play a spell speaker line in my derevi stax list as a one card wincon. It gets ephemerate, then neoform to get emiel to flicker derevi for infinite mana :)
*pushes up glasses* You would need to protrube something beyond a limit or surface. So the midrange green deck could protrube beyond the average green deck in CEDH, but it wouldn't protrube beyond green stax as that doesn't work rrally with the definition of the word.
In survival if you have one more creature in hand you could get dockside to make the line possibly cheaper or the same mana as the other lines if it's worth it if not at least make the survival line cheaper if dockside can make 4 treasures it will be 1 mana cheaper for the line and so on for each treasure from there.
My favorite doomsday line is Final Fortune, (lotus petal), Grand Abolisher, Thassa's oracle. Irrelevant, (irrelevant) Play doomsday Attack with kraum drawing final fortune (if you can draw a second card you can draw the petal too) Play final fortune Draw Grand abolisher Play abolisher Attack with Kraum Draw Thassa's oracle Play oracle, Win it slots very nicely in my Ad Naus shell and the only weird card I have to play is final fortune, which many people already play anyway.
It doesnt see much play now, but fireminds foresight and invert/invent in izzet storm lists like mizzix and Vadrik. Also Yisan could probably be classed as a 1 card win con that sees pretty regular play although not always as a win con. I would also wonder if necro ended up being ranked as a card instead of as a win con. As a win con its cool in like shimmer zur etc but sort of unreliable. Also final parting into hoarding broodlord and reanimate is probably better than into razaketh now imo, maybe a hot take tho... but it does peer for 6 mana instead of 7
In defense of defense of the heart couldn't you grab spell seeker and thassa. Then have spell seeker grab ephemerate. Flicker the seeker grab demonic consultation and on the next upkeep bounce the thassa for the win. It's a winning combo that's less mana than the witch and just as slow
In regards to razaketh you guys didn't mention the leonin relic warder/ animate dead combo. That gives you infinite sacrifices for razaketh. It's a super valid line.
I have been trying out imperial recruiter in a vial thrassios list I’m working on. I have had a game where i was able to play imperial recruiter to get dockside and then neo form the recruiter into displacer kitten.
Have you considered [[final parting]] to get [[squee the immortal]] into the graveyard and [[food chain]] into hand to combo off? I have a korvold deck and wonder if its worth adding.
Defense of the Heart to get Palinchron and Deadeye Navigator for infinite mana. First game of commander I ever played that's what I lost to...in a "casual" game.
When evauluatiing Defense of the heart I consider it a stax piece. It says if you ever get 3 creatures in play, I win the game on my next turn. Just my 2 cents
I'm surprised you didn't mention Final Parting with K'rrik. Costs a bit less and you can get Vilis and reanimate. Cast Reanimate and draw a ton of cards from the loss of life. Not saying it's necessarily much higher but it isn't as terrible as you made it sound.
I still say Zur Necro decks can be a thing, you just need to play a slow, conservative sort of game. I use Proteus Staff in Talrand, and I use Jin-Gitaxias and Sphinx of the Second Sun as my only creatures, if I can cast a Sunder most people are in a great deal of trouble, and using Proteus Staff after my 2nd creature is out lets me reorder my entire deck, after which I possibly draw a total of 8 extra cards. The deck can struggle a tad if I dig out Jin first, but it's hard for me drawing 7 cards, and everyone else being stuck with a 0 hand size, to be bad, it's just that I can draw poorly and have insufficient interaction to protect Jin, so the deck runs a heap of counters. I like having Sphinx because the bonus untap makes it pretty easy to win, as I'll always have heaps of interaction and mana up for everyone's 1 card per turn since I can dig out Jin as long as I have another creature (I can sac Talrand in a pinch), once I set up it's hard to lose, so I'm trying to figure out ways to make it more stable! ATM the deck is lowish budget, but I have a few cards that can go in.
So Doomsday vs Opposition agent: you play doomsday, guy across the table says" i have opp..., cut him off saying "done" holding the top five cards of your library, you dont need to look. Opposition agent triggers and exiles the five cards, now your entire library is exiled and you have no cards to play. thassa oracle, jace wielder of mysteries, laboratory maniac win.
I feel like final parting isn’t done justice. The only deck you should play it in is krrik where it becomes a 3 mana spell that’s gonna dump vilis and grab reanimate to draw you 8 cards
Love this topic, but I disagree with your placement of Final Parting. It's just cuz I'm a K'rrik Son of Yawgmother player. Final Parting is just a way better Ad Nauseam in K'rrik, you pitch Vilis Broker of Blood and add Reanimate. That will draw you 8 and then you just start pinging your opponent's creatures or casting spells and drawing every time you do one or the other.

Don't forget to go back to it in a year or 2 from now to update the lists!
New to cEDH and you guys have become my favorite magic content creators hands down.
honourable mention to Oath of Druids (having only Lab maniac as creature in the deck)
Spellseeker is also a one card combo with Yarok or Panharmonicon. Double triggers to start the line is fun.
Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines as well!

i might be wrong, but i like using final parting in my kess deck..pretty nice to put thassa in hand and a consult in the graveyard.
That's gas
final parting is used a lot in valroz lists because it finds reanimate and hulk!
Or K’rrik.. it grabs reanimate and Vilis.. then draw a good hunk of your deck. Lol
This series is the BEST. Please rank the best single cards in each color next!
I love Intuition so much! My favorite pile I ever got was Essence Flux, Red Blast, and Culling the Weak in Inalla. I had to reset a Scholar of the Ages and had a reanimation spell in hand
