My great grandfather fled to Taiwan with Chiang Kai shek for decades. When he returned to the mainland last year, he saw how his hometown had changed so much. At the age of 97, he knelt down like a child in front of his mother's graveyard and cried uncontrollably.
My grandfather, aged 16, alongside two of his brothers, 15 and 19, were conscripted in 1938 and fought through the war against Japan. His younger brother died from Japanese artillery during the battle of Wuhan; he said he couldn't find his body as the shell had just shattered him into pieces. By the end of the war, his older brother was already a company commander. They then participated in the following civil war, during which their units got separated during the campaign of Huaihai. The battalion of his older brother managed to break out of the Communists encirclement during their final retreat and eventually went to Taiwan with the ROC government. But my grandfather was captured and was then enlisted into the PLA straight away due to his age and experiences. Grandfather later was sent to Korea as a part of the PVA during the Korean War in 1950. And that's where he lost his entire company of men and three of his fingers from frostbite. His older brother settled in Taiwan and pursued a career in the police force, in which he eventually became the deputy chief of the police of Taoyuan. He and his brother were eventually reunited in 1987 after 38 years of separation as improved diplomatic relations between China and Taiwan opened a route for a large number of people who sought to visit their separated close relatives in mainland China after decades of separation. Sadly, their Mother passed away just a year before their reunification, that she wouldn't live to see her eldest son ever again since he left home in 1938. Grandfather passed away in 2009. RIP 爷爷, his entire life was basically a chapter in Chinese history, a page that was filled with pain and despair, but yet with strength and resilience. Hope he is in a better place, now, reunited with all his brothers, beside his mum, in a world where there is no war and hunger.

Unfortunately for the Japanese, thanks to the American nuclear bomb, Korea, whose materials and manpower had been exploited by the Japanese Empire, was liberated. I think Japan would have won if not for China. The main reason Japan lost the war was that it started a war with US, and the reason for the war with US was the oil shortage caused by US's oil export restrictions. Without the Sino-Japanese war, Japan would have been able to control Southeast Asia earlier than in historical fact, and if that had happened, the oil shortage would have been resolved and there would be no reason for Japan to go to war with US. Even after the Soviet invasion and second bombing, Japan was unwilling to surrender unconditionally. Their original terms had been: * The Emperor remains in power. * No foreign occupation of Japan, Korea or Formosa (Taiwan). * Self administration of disarmament. * Self administration of war crimes accusations. After Nagasaki, the Emperor ordered a surrender offered on only the first term. That was rejected and followed by a leaflets dropped from bombers, informing the Japanese people of the atomic bombings, the surrender negotiations and the demand for unconditional surrender. It also threatened more nuclear strikes if Japan did not surrender. At that point, members of the Big Six basically told the Emperor that if Japan did not surrender immediately, he was likely to be face either a popular rebellion (demanding surrender) or a military coup (to halt the negotiations). As to the casualties of the bomb, it is worth keeping in mind the situation on the mainland. The Japanese occupation of Asia was incredibly brutal, and in 1945 it ramped up to new levels. On average, 20,000 civilians were executed and another 80,000 died due to conditions imposed by the occupation every week. A two week delay in the end of the occupation (and ability to deliver relief) would have resulted in as many civilian deaths as the bombs (more if the bombs were taken off the table and Hiroshima released as a firebombing target). Plans for an invasion estimated the Japanese would resist for several months.

Japan before the global economy and trade did not have a lot of natural resources, they were lacking in oil and steel. Besides resources the Japanese army and navy were actually extremely divided and would actively sabotage each other and themselves and rarely cooperated for anything. They still did remarkably well on their own but it is part of the reason why the land invasion in China couldn't be sustained as the Navy straight up couldn't give a shit to send supplies by ships lmfao which meant their logistics is severely screwed.

While Soviet contributed greatly in European Theater, in Pacific theater, Soviet was indeed a joke. Their operation started after the first atomic bomb. They were fighting an army that was already in war for 14 years since 1931 and on the verge of surrender.

However, the Americans were very strategic; in the final moments of the war, they dropped these two nuclear bombs, thus securing the right to prosecute war criminals after the war. Nevertheless, Japanese war criminals were never truly tried. Unlike Germany, Japan has not undertaken a serious reflection on its actions and still attempts to shed its identity as a defeated nation. Japanese leaders regularly pay tribute to these war criminals, attempting to revive militarism.
Japan had known the war was lost for YEARS. The question wasn't about losing, it was about at what costs. Japan's goal was to "bleed the Allies white" by making their advances as costly as possible so they could get more favorable terms to end the war. Nukes basically destroyed that strategy because the US could destroy their cities and armies without receiving any casualties. Soviet invasion was influential and did push some hardliners into the surrender camp, but it was hardly decisive because the Soviets lacked the amphibious capability to invade Japan.
I remember hearing about one of my cousin's grandfather who fought in WW2 against the Japanese in northeast India from my father. During a cease-fire, a Japanese soldier stopped him and tried to talk to him. He killed that Japanese soldier and when he checked his bag there was only a small piece of ginger. IJA was still fighting in Manchuria when Japan surrendered. The nukes had a lot more effect on Japan's decision to surrender, but the Soviet invasion did push a few IJA hardliners into the surrender side.
Meanwhile, Yan Xishan turned from the governor of Shanxi under China to governor of Shanxi under Japan, and once Japan capitulated he recruited a huge number of Japanese troops to the nationalist Chinese side and fought with this army against Communist with more determination than Chiang-Kai-Shek until he was forced to retreat to Taiwan. There he became the de-facto leader and layed foundation for the modern Taiwan as an independent country/rebelious province (Depending on how you see them), since Chiang-Kai-Shek didn't care about the remnants of National army and simply stole the money reserve for himself. Then Chiang-Kai-Shek arrived to Taiwan and Yan Xishan instantly lost his position, and was forgotten to history by most. A man who always made the best decision for the small province he controlled, willing even to cooperate with the Japanese in order to keep it prosperous and neutral, and who achieved many successes in his governship of both Shanxi and Taiwan, earning the name of model governor for that previous achievement. Nowadays recognised by People's Republic of China as a governor who made correct decisions in stopping a plague that was spreading in Shanxi and into other regions of China.

The war in china was not the reason the Allies declared war on Japan, although it certainly didn’t put japan in a favorable lens. What started the pacific theater was the bombing of Perl harbor. But the United States did put in place an oil embargo because of this war and at the time, that was around 70% of Japan’s oil importation

My grandfather, aged 16, alongside two of his brothers, 15 and 19, were conscripted in 1938 and fought through the war against Japan. His younger brother died from Japanese artillery during the battle of Wuhan; he said he couldn't find his body as the shell had just shattered him into pieces. By the end of the war, his older brother was already a company commander.
They then participated in the following civil war, during which their units got separated during the campaign of Huaihai. The battalion of his older brother managed to break out of the Communists encirclement during their final retreat and eventually went to Taiwan with the ROC government. But my grandfather was captured and was then enlisted into the PLA straight away due to his age and experiences.
Grandfather later was sent to Korea as a part of the PVA during the Korean War in 1950. And that's where he lost his entire company of men and three of his fingers from frostbite. His older brother settled in Taiwan and pursued a career in the police force, in which he eventually became the deputy chief of the police of Taoyuan.
He and his brother were eventually reunited in 1987 after 38 years of separation as improved diplomatic relations between China and Taiwan opened a route for a large number of people who sought to visit their separated close relatives in mainland China after decades of separation. Sadly, their Mother passed away just a year before their reunification, that she wouldn't live to see her eldest son ever again since he left home in 1938.
Grandfather passed away in 2009. RIP 爷爷, his entire life was basically a chapter in Chinese history, a page that was filled with pain and despair, but yet with strength and resilience. Hope he is in a better place, now, reunited with all his brothers, beside his mum, in a world where there is no war and hunger.
Really interesting and great writing story. So sorry for old generations, where the war was almost everywhere.

The soviets also siezed all of manchuria's factories built by the japanese along with the east austrian, east german, and czech industries which they stole and used to funnel their own industry.
Even after the Soviet invasion and second bombing, Japan was unwilling to surrender unconditionally. Their original terms had been:
* The Emperor remains in power.
* No foreign occupation of Japan, Korea or Formosa (Taiwan).
* Self administration of disarmament.
* Self administration of war crimes accusations.
After Nagasaki, the Emperor ordered a surrender offered on only the first term. That was rejected and followed by a leaflets dropped from bombers, informing the Japanese people of the atomic bombings, the surrender negotiations and the demand for unconditional surrender. It also threatened more nuclear strikes if Japan did not surrender. At that point, members of the Big Six basically told the Emperor that if Japan did not surrender immediately, he was likely to be face either a popular rebellion (demanding surrender) or a military coup (to halt the negotiations).
As to the casualties of the bomb, it is worth keeping in mind the situation on the mainland. The Japanese occupation of Asia was incredibly brutal, and in 1945 it ramped up to new levels. On average, 20,000 civilians were executed and another 80,000 died due to conditions imposed by the occupation every week. A two week delay in the end of the occupation (and ability to deliver relief) would have resulted in as many civilian deaths as the bombs (more if the bombs were taken off the table and Hiroshima released as a firebombing target). Plans for an invasion estimated the Japanese would resist for several months.

Besides resources the Japanese army and navy were actually extremely divided and would actively sabotage each other and themselves and rarely cooperated for anything. They still did remarkably well on their own but it is part of the reason why the land invasion in China couldn't be sustained as the Navy straight up couldn't give a shit to send supplies by ships lmfao which meant their logistics is severely screwed.

Technically incorrect; months before the A bombs were dropped, Burma had been liberated by allied forces, including Brits, US & Chinese forces.
Part of Chinese army(estimated around 140,000 in troop number) managed hold-off Japan invasion at the Burma's northern region and rescued hundreds of thousands of British troops from the hands of Japanese invasion forces. Also, the Japanese road link along the eastern China was not successfully established (i.e. Japan had to mainly rely on the sea route throughout the war) but infected heavy losses to the Chinese army at the time .

But if Roosevelt was more confident in his atomic bomb progress in Yalta, he probably wouldn't have offered Stalin this trade. Everything in history is just a domino effect of something else.

It is worth pointing out that the two nuclear bombs dropped by the Americans were not the primary reason for ending the war. Once the Soviet Red Army decided to enter Northeast China to confront the Japanese forces, Japan was already destined to lose the war. However, the Americans were very strategic; in the final moments of the war, they dropped these two nuclear bombs, thus securing the right to prosecute war criminals after the war. Nevertheless, Japanese war criminals were never truly tried. Unlike Germany, Japan has not undertaken a serious reflection on its actions and still attempts to shed its identity as a defeated nation. Japanese leaders regularly pay tribute to these war criminals, attempting to revive militarism.
Japan had known the war was lost for YEARS. The question wasn't about losing, it was about at what costs. Japan's goal was to "bleed the Allies white" by making their advances as costly as possible so they could get more favorable terms to end the war. Nukes basically destroyed that strategy because the US could destroy their cities and armies without receiving any casualties.
Soviet invasion was influential and did push some hardliners into the surrender camp, but it was hardly decisive because the Soviets lacked the amphibious capability to invade Japan.

I remember hearing about one of my cousin's grandfather who fought in WW2 against the Japanese in northeast India from my father. During a cease-fire, a Japanese soldier stopped him and tried to talk to him. He killed that Japanese soldier and when he checked his bag there was only a small piece of ginger. IJA was still fighting in Manchuria when Japan surrendered. The nukes had a lot more effect on Japan's decision to surrender, but the Soviet invasion did push a few IJA hardliners into the surrender side.

A man who always made the best decision for the small province he controlled, willing even to cooperate with the Japanese in order to keep it prosperous and neutral, and who achieved many successes in his governship of both Shanxi and Taiwan, earning the name of model governor for that previous achievement. Nowadays recognised by People's Republic of China as a governor who made correct decisions in stopping a plague that was spreading in Shanxi and into other regions of China.
