If you want to edit the pattern, double click the object and the program will go into isolation mode. It'll temporarily separate the object (or mask) and the pattern. You can then edit or swap the pattern.

When you said, select the pattern and cut it, I'm not sure what you meant, or how you did that. This was at 4:00
Instead of CTRL-C to Copy, you'll do CTRL-X to cut. It is also under the Edit menu.
