I've restored flat back basses and I've told the owners that they have to keep their instruments humidified in the winter when it gets really cold so the dry air doesn't do the damage that I just un-did. Well, they left for the Christmas holidays and came back 2 weeks later. The janitor was supposed to keep the humidifier filled. He forgot. The instrument came right back and it was now my fault. Flat back basses are extremely prone to cracking because there's no arch to give when they shrink. Keep them humidified or sell them to someone down south where the air is humid. This happened multiple times to me. Not my fault-

This is very interesting to watch. I wish the screen time for each still image was longer by at least 2 seconds. There's a lot to take in from these pictures and I had to pause and restart many times. Still it's a very interesting process.
Lavoro moooolto ben fatto!
I assume you'd glue it back together and sell it with the original finish? Who'd buy it? You gonna play it like that? Right. How long you been doing this?
Grazie e buon anno.
Beautiful work indeed. However, sloping sides on a bass are a problem. They make it very difficult to pick it up the instrument or even to put it on a chair. Placing 2 fingers in the F-hole while your left hand holds the neck is a good solution, but not in the long run.
Wrong, the top and back are still the same, only repaired to playing status. The scroll is cosmetic, but repaired. New tuners, etc. But the basic elements top and back the same. Well done.
Not really. Up until the 19th century it was very common for basses to have only 3 strings. Bottesini played on a 3-string bass and it wasn't until the 20th century that the use of 3-string basses was (almost) discontinued, in favor of mostly 4-string basses. And if you look at the label inside the bass, it says it was made in 18(2?)8, so it's not that old when compared to others from the 1500's and 1600's that are still being played today
Bravo well done! Now it has life again and can return to the orchestra once more because of your love for your work.
Bravo maestro, quel courage.🎉
Absolute mastery. Really enjoyed this. Bravo.
Outstanding restoration, thank you for sharing your work.
Brian S thank you too!
Amazing craftsmanship. A ton of time and effort to make this play again.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
What a craftsmanship! Stunning work! Congratulations!

good work, but why strip the original varnish?
Because it was completely on bad condition.
Alberto Biasin excellent job. The German bass I am restoring seems new compared to your bass! I hope mine comes out as nicely!
Alberto Biasin I agree. The new varnish looks beautiful and it will allow the instrument to last a few more centuries. Not everything new is unworthy.
@@nickdryad Correct I agree.
I build mandolins in South Africa.
I'd love to hear this!
Lots of work !
amazing!
What were the three strings used when this instrument was made?
Not a good idea to strip the varnish on an instrument this valuable.
The original varnish was in too bad condition, was impossible save it, it was pratically in dust condition. I've done every valuation before strip it
@@liuteriavicentina You did it right.

i think my ex originally posted this comment? i'm looking at it now like... 🤨 i don't think i would ever say something like that lol

Belo trabalho
where did you find it
Wow! From what year is this instrument?
1808
you are a magician!
I'm only a violinmaker that love his work, thank you :)
Termite Damage? - Well done!
Probably a borer rather than termite
Woodworm.
Bravi!
How come it only has 3 strings ?
Bellissimo!
MrChilensko grazie!
Bravo!
di chi è la musica in sottofondo? Grazie!

Reminds me a bit of Archimedes’ Ship paradox. How can this be the original double bass if most of the wood was replaced?
Wrong, the top and back are still the same, only repaired to playing status.

mmmmm, unbelievable to see that honey double mass, to see the final results, WOW !
Three strings? I'm confused. This certainly is ancient

@@federicoandre5717 Oh wao. Thank you. I had no idea.
That poor instrument. Looks like it was buried in the rubble of a bombed out building for 200 years.
fabulous job, but i would have just built a new one
roman14032 the wood makes most of the sound
Io non avrei tolto la vernice anche se in parte rovinata...

@@liuteriavicentina Avete fatto un miracolo, era davvero in condizioni disastrose!
You can spend your life on.. Facebook... or fixing an old "Kontrabass" . Lovely but personally - gloss does not fit this beauty... :(
Bellissimo!!
Bravo!
